I don't really know that much about The Shootist. It's John Wayne's last movie. That's it.

Rocky, Taxi Driver, All the President's Men and Network are locks.
Its just that 5th spot again, so I'm going to leave this up for a bit longer for people to make arguments for their choices.

Its just that 5th spot again. MY "5TH MOVIE" CONTENDERS1. Carrie - It started Hollywood's love affair with Stephen King. 2. The Omen - It's a masterpiece of the horror genre. It put Richard Donner on the map. 3. Silver Streak - It's the poster child for multi-genre movies and made Richard Pryor a star. 4. Silent Movie - CLASSIC Mel Brooks and WAY better than The Artist 5. Marathon Man - "Just when you thought it was safe to go back to the dentist." But overall, I think it should be Carrie. Like I said... STEPHEN KING. Also, it made Brian De Palma a Hollywood player and it definitely gave John Travolta some "street cred."

I can support Carrie, though I'm a bit surprised no one is backing Assault on Precinct 13.

1. 2001: A Space Odyssey: Often imitated never duplicated. Pretty much every film post-2001 has been inspired by it to some degree or another, but no film has ever come close. There's nothing else quite like it.
2. Night of the Living Dead: Zombies may have evolved over time, but the core aspects of the creatures all started here. Beyond the zombies, the film also influenced horror due to the gore, low-budget, and isolated setting.
3. Planet of the Apes: Launched a massive franchise which is still going strong today and has one of the most iconic endings of all-time.
4. Once Upon a Time in the West: Leone's most beloved film may be The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, but this might actually be his best work. It's mature, elegant, and many directors have declared the film an influence on their own work.
5. Rosemary's Baby: One of the most respected horror films of all time, and one that can be seen as a precursor to other Satanic horror films like The Exorcist and The Omen.

Let me make my case before the stove warms up. THE PRODUCERS: It put Mel Brooks on the map. It made Gene Wilder a star. It's widely considered one of the greatest comedies of all-time. It influenced multiple generations of comedians and filmmakers. It redefined how we mock Hitler and the Nazi's. It made "musicals" hip to a certain demographic. It led to the successful and highly acclaimed Broadway play. Should I go on?

I'm gonna put it out there, and I apologize to JBond, but if you guys are REALLY passionate about Rosemary's Baby then I'm willing to sacrifice Planet of the Apes. That movie didn't do anything that Twilight Zone and Star Trek had already been doing on television.

Planet of the Apes isn't going anywhere. Planet of the Apes is a great movie, but it's not "groundbreaking." Go watch The Twilight Zone and Star Trek and you'll see where Planet of the Apes came from. And the sequels were B-level at best. That doesn't mean they were bad per say. Some of them are definitely noteworthy. But they weren't considered "prestige" movies in the 70's and still aren't.

I'm not even close to being passionate about Rosemary's Baby. I haven't seen it and I hate horror.
I'm trying not to be biased...
