You're forgetting City of God, The Pianist, 25th Hour, Adaptation, Name me 10 people you know, outside the Internet and in your film class, who have seen those movies. These people are out there. I also don't think you should throw out the opinion of the serious film fans since they're the ones that genuinely care about this sort of thing. It definitely built a following. Growing up, this movie was talked about a bunch and had an impact on almost all of my friends, at least my guy friends, to some extent or another. Which is why I didn't list it, but it was still something I considered. But we did debate it. It wasn't/hasn't been something easily dismissed. Agree to disagree. I woudln't call those other films masterpieces, but there's some great elements in all of them.

I'm still kind of surprised that The Pianist isn't even really in the conversation. I listed my opinion on it and was pretty much ignored, while it's sitting at #42 on IMDb's top 250 (an oftentimes meh list, but its value is still recognized by many).

I'm still kind of surprised that The Pianist isn't even really in the conversation. I saw the movie ONCE and thought it was another Oscar-bait Holocaust movie. And I don't know a single person in real life who has seen it. Not to mention that Roman Polanski's Oscar win is VERY controversial because he's hiding in Europe to avoid doing jailtime for raping a girl. And, Adrian Brody's career didn't go anywhere. You and the people at IMDb might think it's a great movie, and I respect that, but I fail to see how it's "important."

I love the movie and think it's one of the year's best, but it's legacy will forever be in the shadow of Schindler's List and even Sophie's Choice, the latter I find extremely overrated.

I think it's a very strong film but it didn't exactly break the mold and I don't know that it's been overly influential or popular.

Man, I dont know, I'm pretty confused at this point. My tallies show the top pciks being City of God, Spiderman, Minority Report, Two Towers and 25th Hour, but so many people have been changing their picks, and 28 days later is suddenly on a big discussion kick. so... give me a second.

Okay, two towers, 25th hour (still not sure why...), spirited away, or 28 days later for the last two spots. I choose Two Towers and Spirited Away.

Dracula and I brought this up many ages ago, but it's worth repeating, Princess Mononoke is the movie that put Miyazaki on the American map. Or at least with younger audiences. I'm sure the success of Akira opened the door for certain people to roam around the anime and foreign sections of their video store. Spirited Away may have gotten critical praise and won the Oscar for Animation, but it flopped at the American box office and every Miyazaki movie since then has been ignored by American audiences. Even the most hardcore anime fans didn't care about Howl's Moving Castle, Ponyo and The Wind Rises. Miyazaki may be the Disney of Japan, but he can't even compete with Pokemon in America.

Two Towers' trailer was also hugely influential on what came after.

A lot of the shots in Carrie have been imitated since, and it's certainly been the impetus for a lot of Stephen King's success.
I love The Omen, but I can't bring myself to include it just yet. I can be persuaded though.

1. Taxi Driver: Iconic, daring, and many filmmakers have cited this as a favourite. It's portrayed of a deranged mind driving through the city at night has certainly been imitated, and the film has managed to find audiences with both film critics/enthusiasts and the public to a certain extent.
2. Rocky: I think this one sort of speaks for itself. Launched Stallone's career and a massively successful and franchise.
3. Network: It's one of Sidney Lumet's most praised films and its media satire is just as on point today as it was in 1976. Also, the "I'm as mad as hell," speech is quoted by people who haven't seen the movie, and a lot of people have expressed huge admiration for the film, including Aaron Sorkin and Paul Thomas Anderson.
4. All the President's Men: A chronicle of an important event of the decade and one that serves as the ultimate film of 70s paranoia by going right to the source. It's argument for the need of free press is still relevant and this film has sort of served as a template for other films about journalism.
5. Assault on Precinct 13: One of the quintessential "little films that could". Mean with little money, this film become a cult classic, established John Carpenter as someone to watch, and had an influence on a number of subsequent action films.
