Apparently, a memorable quote or two makes a movie important now. That wasn't my point. What I was illustrating is that 1987 was a VERY pop culture year.

BORN IN EAST L.A. - Arguably, the greatest movie about the U.S.-Mexican immigration issue. THE EVIL DEAD II - It's beloved by people who actually make movies and has inspired generations of filmmakers. LETHAL WEAPON - The definitive buddy cop movie. ROBOCOP - The definitive 80's action movie. No, it's NOT Die Hard. We'll address this in 1988. WALL STREET - Inspired generations of assholes.

So clearly Wall Street and Full Metal Jacket are in. Lethal Weapon has gotten LOTS of love and thebtskink just gave Evil Dead II some extra points. Then there's Robocop which has gotten votes from me and Dracula and an honorable mention from PG Cooper. And, The Princess Bride got votes from JBond and Knerys. So... Evil Dead II Full Metal Jacket Lethal Weapon Wall Street Robocop OR The Princess Bride That's where things are right now.

That's a tough decision. I'm going with...The Princess Bride. RoboCop may have made a bigger impact at the time, but The Princess Bride has really resonated with its audience and even people born well after its release have fallen in love with it. I just have a feeling that the audience for The Princess Bride has a lot more fondness for it than RoboCop has with its audience. Plus, with Lethal Weapon, we already have a great action movie, and I'm sure will place Aliens and Die Hard for 86 and 88, so we don't really need another one.
It's very close though.

I feel like a 1987 list without Robocop would be pretty deficient, although I don't have too many ironclad arguments for it's influence. Is it too late to bring Wings of Desire back into the conversation? I feel like the list as it stands is overly Hollywood.

I feel like a 1987 list without Robocop would be pretty deficient, although I don't have too many ironclad arguments for it's influence. The fact that Robocop is often considered a rival to The Terminator, the same way that Star Trek & Star Wars are always debated or Batman & Spider-Man, is all the argument you need. PG Cooper is just being silly. The Princess Bride is a classic. There's no doubt about it. But it's no match for Robocop. Before Deexan mocked me, I already pointed out how pop culture driven 1987 was: 1. BORN IN EAST L.A. - "Whaaas sappening?" 2. DIRTY DANCING - "No one puts baby in a corner." 3. EDDIE MURPHY RAW - "Tell Bill Cosby I said, 'have a Coke and a smile and shut the fuck up.'" 4. THE EVIL DEAD II - "Groovy." 5. FATAL ATTRACTION - "I will not be IGNORED, Dan!" 6. FULL METAL JACKET - "Me so horny. Me so horny. Me love you long time." 7. GOOD MORNING, VIETNAM - "Goooooooood morning, Vi-et-nam! This is not a test. This is rock and roll." 8. HOLLYWOOD SHUFFLE - "We're looking for an Eddie Murphy type. Can you be more Murphy-esque?" 9. LA BAMBA - "The sky belongs to the stars." 10. LETHAL WEAPON - "I'm too old for this shit." 11. THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS - "I scared the living daylights out of her." 12. THE LOST BOYS - "One thing about living in Santa Carla I never could stomach, all the damn vampires." 13. THE MONSTER SQUAD - Wolfman's got nards! 14. MOONSTRUCK - "SNAP OUT OF IT!" 15. NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET: THE DREAM WARRIORS - "Welcome to primetime, bitch!" 16. PLANES, TRAINS AND AUTOMOBILES - "YOU'RE GOING THE WRONG WAY!" 17. PREDATOR - "GET TO DA CHOPPA. NOW!" 18. THE PRINCESS BRIDE - "My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die." 19. RAISING ARIZONA - "I dreamed on, further into the future than I had ever dreamed before..." 20. ROBOCOP - "I'd buy that for a dollar." 21. SPACEBALLS - "May the schwartz be with you." 22. THE UNTOUCHABLES - "THAT'S the Chicago way." 23. WALL STREET - "Greed, for lack of a better word, is good."

Don't misunderstand me; I love the s*** out of RoboCop, but I meet more people who love The Princess Bride. Between the two, I'd be happy with either to be honest. Is it too late to bring Wings of Desire back into the conversation? I feel like the list as it stands is overly Hollywood. You're probably the only one who's seen it, though I'd really like to. Anyway, what is your argument for it?

I meet more people who love The Princess Bride. what is your argument for it? Remember the Nicolas Cage movie, City of Angels? It was the American remake. So please, don't encourage Dracula.

Anyway, what is your argument for it? Well, it's not a perfect movie and has its slow spots. It's not necessarily my favorite movie or anything but I think it stands out because it came out during something of a cinematic wasteland and brought ambitious European arthouse filmmaking when there was a definate shortage of vision. I can't say that there's any one element of it that was widely imitated but I feel like it did sort of nudge things forward and challenge a generation of filmmakers to step up and embrace poetic film styles again. Additionally, it was made shortly before the Berlin wall fell and acts as something of a document for what that city was like during that period. As for that Nicholas Cage movie, it's irrelevant, has almost nothing in common with the original beyond a very basic premise.

Rather than Princess Bride, but I'd also be willing to sacrifice Robocop for it.

Robocop over The Princess Bride doesn't make any sense to me. How often do we hear people say "As you wish" or "Inconceivable!" Or perhaps "I don't think that word means what you think it means" on the internet. Or "he's mostly dead." Neverending showed the only famous part from Robocop.

Alright, so, I'm thinking maybe Wall Street shouldn't be a lock on this. Yeah, it was emblematic of the greed and consumption of the time, but so was Robocop and it did it in a more creative, entertaining and popular way and did more to advance things cinematically. Wall Street is certainly a fine film, but it's ultimately a rather minor entry in the Oliver Stone cannon and a great performance and famous line only takes you so far.
So, I'm thinking the list should be:
Full Metal Jacket Lethal Weapon Robocop Wings of Desire The Princess Bride
So, who would buy that for a dollar?

I'm okay with it, but given all the support Wall Street got, it seems weird to toss it out now. Though there are definitely better films to honour Oliver Stone with.
