Stagecoach (The prototypical John Ford movie, made John Wayne a star, revolutionized the western paving the way for them to be a major genre for the next three decades, had some highly influential photography, was watched repeatedly by Orson Wells when he was getting ready to make Citizen Kane... need I go on?) The Rules of the Game (A major film that has repeatedly been featured on the Sight and Sound lists and had some very influential deep focus photography) Ninotchka (Maybe the ultimate Ernst Lubitsch film) Gone with the Wind (Highest grossing movie of all time adjusted for inflation) The Wizard of Oz ("We're not in Kansas anymore")

I'll also through an honourable mention out to Of Mice and Men, which featured great early performances from Burgess Meredith and Lon Chaney Jr, as well as being of the first John Steinnbeck adaptations. It's not nearly popular or influential enough to be considered "important", but it is a great movie and one of the best (that I've seen) from that year.

Choice: Rules of the game, ninotcha, union pacific, wuthering heights, son of frankenstein.

I will fucking filibuster for Rules of the Game if I have to, it is far and away the most important of the nominees. It's been on each one of the Sight and Sound top tens and was sitting at number two right behind Citizen Kan in '72, '82, and '92 and has been in the top four otherwise except for the '52 list. It's chateau setting was plainly an influence on Gosford Park and a number of other like-minded projects and its bitter commentary on class was a bold statement to be making on the eve of World War II. François Truffaut once said "it isn't an accident that The Rules of the Game inspired a large number of young people who had first thought of expressing themselves as novelists to take up careers as filmmakers" and its status as one of the great materpieces of French cinema it also had a profound influence on the rest of the French New Wave.
Read the "Legacy" section of the film's Wikipedia page if you must:

I haven't seen it in quite some time (though I've added it to my Netflix queue for a re-watch) but Drac is right, it deserves to be there.

1. Full Metal Jacket: All the training camp stuff, particularly R. Lee Ermey's performance, have become iconic and are referenced and spoofed a lot. Beyond that, this film is so radically different from other war films, but it still expresses the classic themes of the insanity of war.
2. Wall Street: "Greed is good." This line and Michael Douglas' performance are both insanely iconic. In fact, many wall street tycoons look up to Gordon Gecko as a role model, despite the fact that he is the villain of the film. Wall Street also had a clear influence on other movies regarding greed and excess, notably Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street
3. Lethal Weapon: This isn't the first buddy cop film, but it is the peak of the genre and had a big influence on subsequent buddy cop films. The film's combination of genuine edge and grit with emotion and humour make this a still loved film in the series it spawned is pretty good too.
4. Fatal Attraction: Started the trend of crazed girlfriends seeking vengeance and the whole "yuppie horror" genre Dracula covered a little while back. Scenes from the film are still referenced quite a bit too.
5. Evil Dead II: An extremely loved film with a hugely passionate cult audience. It's the film that made Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell legends to their fan base. It also seems to be the template for a sort of extreme horror-comedy that many have tried to emulate.
Honourable Mentions:
The Untouchables: It's one of De Palma's most successful films, it has a great cast, and it is indeed awesome, though I don't know if it's had any real lasting impact.
RoboCop: I wanted to include this, but I only had room for one action film and chose Lethal Weapon instead. RoboCop is an awesome movie filled with great action, brutal violence, and strong satire. But honestly, I don't know if those elements had too much of an influence. Even the other RoboCop films and tv shows and such moved away from a lot of these elements. RoboCop is still an iconic character as is the ED-209, but even so.
Predator: Similar to RoboCop. Some awesome Schwarzenegger action, one-liners, and a fantastic creature design, but I only had room for one action film.
Empire of the Sun, Au Revoir les Enfants, Angel Heart, and House of Games: All moves I greatly enjoy, but all are too minimal to be really considered important.

Full Metal Jacket: Kubrick classic Robocop: Just an awesome movie that's exemplified (and parodied) a generation of 80s action/sci-fi. Wall Street: Greed is Good. Defined an era. Wings of Desire: One of the definitive arthouse movies of the 80s Red Sorghum: Zhang Yimou's first film. Ushered in something of a golden age of Chinese cinema.

I agree with your first 3 PG. I dont think fatal attraction is as important, and certianly not evil dead. I don't particularly care for Evil Dead, but it probably has a more passionate fan-base than any other film released that year. Fatal Attraction was very popular in 1987, was a success with both critics and audiences, and inspired a series of similar films. It should be considered.

Apparently, a memorable quote or two makes a movie important now.
