I think Tree of Life should stay.
Are we saying contagion because of covid? I may be able to get on boar with that I suppose. But I definitely think Bridesmaids. Its one of the few comedies this decade which made a mark.

Covid has certainly confirmed that it will be a movie that's remembered for a long time. Bridesmaids... I don't know. I thought it was over-rated from the jump, but it could be argued to have done some work towards mainstreaming the female led comedy.

a bunch of us were arguing for Contagion the first time around, not really sure why it didn't end on the final list. Because it turned into a battle between Contagion and A Separation.

Remember this thread? I'm bringing it back! The last year we had was 2014. I feel like being 8 years out we should be able to tackle 2015 now.
So here we go. Just to remind you all, we are trying to collectively come to a consensus of the 5 most significant films of that year.
So, lets try it
2015

Straight Outta Compton — The first to cross the line between biography and autobiography. It opened the door to Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman.
Sicario — Prisoners may have introduced audiences outside of French Canada to Denis Villeneuve, but it is Sicario that made them pay attention.
Creed — A successful legacy sequel that also became a successful spin-off. J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars was a brand killer. Jurassic World had financial success but not critical one. Creed won this battle.
The Big Short — Adam McKay leaves Will Ferrell. The road leads to HBO’s newest sensation, Succession.
The Hateful Eight — Brought back 70mm film. Oppenheimer in theaters this weekend.

Beasts of No Nation (First film produced and distributed by Netflix) Big Short, The (Probably going to be the most remembered depiction of an imporant event of the era, has influenced similar issue-tainments) Mad Max: Fury Road (Duh) Star Wars: Episode VII- The Force Awakens (Cultural phenomenon, clearly inspired a lot of other Hollywood legasequels)
Tangerine (Notably shot on an iPhone, covered a major topic of the era with a lot of energy and vigor)

You guys continue to miss the point of this thread. The industry went the complete opposite route of Fury Road… and we have our own pal Doomsday as evidence. Other than Christopher Nolan and Tom Cruise, who were doing this long before George Miller returned from Happy Feet land, no one is doing these giant in-camera spectacles. Every one is going the Mandalorian route and the results speak for themselves. We went from the masterpiece of Fury Road to all the godawful shit that has come out this year. No disrespect to Doomsday. I’m sure he’ll be the first to admit it. James Cameron, Nolan and Cruise are the exceptions not the rule. We are in the midst of probably the worst ever era for effects heavy films. When even Indiana fucking Jones is garbage, you know we in trouble.

Some good pics here. Fury Road feels like its the movie that is going to be most remembered coming out of the year. I agree with Big Short as a trend setter. Tangarine makes sense. Not sure about Compton. Did it really directly lead to Boh Rhapsody? Music biopics have always been a thing, not sure why that one stands out.

Fury Road is almost certainly the most popular movie of 2015, but like I said, Hollywood went the opposite route. Unless your name is Christopher Nolan or Tom Cruise, it’ll be a long time before anyone makes a movie like that again. Especially with all the flops we’ve had recently. Hollywood might end up having to spend less money going forward. I think Road Warrior is the more “important” or more influential/impactful of the Mad Max movies. Compton is a prime example of letting the subject matter editorialize their own biopic. At least with Rocketman, Elton wasn’t embarrassed to air out some of his demons. But Compton and Rhapsody were desensitized cause the subjects were producers on it. That’s a bad trend we’re heading on.

Normally save the prestige trailers for last - so for dead reckoning they played ... The bob Marley biopic trailer. Snore. But I sure hope they show his final show... In the burgh.
Fast 7 arguably book ended one of the biggest movie franchise runs we saw at the time (had to kinda ruin it with 8, 9, and 10 but I'm still showing up!)
And boho rhapsody is so bad. Like that bros movie said, took a gay icon and focused on his maybe sorta female partner for the majority of the drama. Bravo.

We are in the midst of probably the worst ever era for effects heavy films. When even Indiana fucking Jones is garbage, you know we in trouble. Just because a movie isn't endlessly copied doesn't mean it isn't important. Is Raging Bull an unimportant movie because most sports films lean closer to Rocky? Being a singular and seminal cinematic achievement is its own stamp of importance and Fury Road absolutely qualifies. This is a movie that was basically immediately christened as an instant classic and one of the greatest action movies of all-time. According to metacritic the film also appeared on and topped more "Best of the Decade" lists than any other movie from the 2010s. That's an insane achievement and it'd be ridiculous to not include it just because most blockbusters are far less imaginative. If anything that just stresses why we need to include Fury Road even more. Not sure about Compton. Did it really directly lead to Boh Rhapsody? Music biopics have always been a thing, not sure why that one stands out. Agreed 100%. The only important innovation I can think of that Straight Outta Compton made was making a music biopic about a group Gen-Xers think is cool rather than Boomers, and that was inevitably going to happen eventually with or without it. I don't buy Creed either. I like that movie more than Force Awakens but it also strikes me as a more conventional spin-off. Star Wars is the one that really set the template for the legacy sequel and its style of nostalgia bait has been way more influential. I'm willing to accept The Big Short and drop Ex Machina, but I think we should really consider Carol, which is a modern classic of Queer cinema, even topping a BFI list of the 30 greatest LGBT films of all-time.

Is Raging Bull an unimportant movie because most sports films lean closer to Rocky? I’d argue that Raging Bull’s significance comes from Robert De Niro’s method acting. Christian Bale’s entire career has been shape shifting. You do remember that Jurassic World came out 6 months before Force Awakens and was major nostalgia bait too. And that series would go on to be a lot less embarrassing and a lot more financially successful in the long run. But both franchises are critical failures. Creed is the one that showed everyone how to do it right, and in a summer of gigantic flops that includes Michael Keaton as Batman and Harrison Ford in a fifth outing as Indiana Jones, Creed III was a critical and financial success. That series is still going strong.

Both franchises were critical failures? Force Awakens and Last Jedi had a very strong critical reception. Force Awakens was called a soft remake of New Hope and Last Jedi is hated almost as much as Phantom Menace. Professional critics may have given both movies a pass upon initial release but all that changed with Rise of Skywalker which exposed the sequel trilogy as a giant waste of time. This trilogy effectively killed Star Wars. Other than Mandalorian, no one cares about Star Wars anymore. The Han Solo movie was a flop, Boba Fett was an embarrassment, Obi Wan was a joke and literally no one watched Andor. Disney is canceling most of their Star Wars projects in development. They can’t even rely on Indiana Jones and Willow cause those flopped too. The Kathleen Kennedy experiment was a failure. Meanwhile… look at Creed. Shit, look at the Rocky franchise. It won.

You do remember that Jurassic World came out 6 months before Force Awakens and was major nostalgia bait too. Jurassic World fits the same mold, but Force Awakens includes the legacy characters, and really stresses how the major plot beats and aesthetics are taken beat for beat from the original film. Jurassic World isn't exactly wildly original (or very good) but it does have an entirely new cast and leans on the changes it makes to the formula, like seeing a functioning park, rather than what it repeats. This is flatly untrue. Financially, the Jurassic World trilogy and sequel Star Wars trilogy are mostly on par, and show the same modest decline in grosses. Star Wars pulls ahead though. Force Awakens out-grossed Jurassic World, Last Jedi narrowly out-grossed Fallen Kingdom, and Rise of Skywalker out-grossed Dominion. And critically it's not even close. Compare the metacritic scores for the Star Wars sequels (80/84/53) to the Jurassic World trilogy (59/51/38). The Jurassic World movies are so worthless that they don't inspire frenzied debate and rage online, but they're pretty clearly recognized as worse. It won. I could get into challenging some of these claims (The Last Jedi wasn't just "given a pass" by professional critics - many were downright euphoric about it, Andor among the most celebrated pieces of Star Wars media in recent memory, Willow flopping has nothing to do with Star Wars and everything to do with no one caring about Willow) but none of them really refute The Force Awakens' importance. Is The Sound of Music unimportant because by the end of the sixties roadshow musicals were bombing and bleeding the industry dry? If anything, studios burning money in an attempt to chase The Force Awakens' success is just another indicator of its influence. Also, for all the failures you've cited, you're missing a pretty massive success in Top Gun: Maverick, an undeniable phenomenon which follows the Force Awakens playbook to a tee. The only difference is Maverick keeps its legacy character at the center rather than moving them to the periphery, but the blueprint is the same.

I honestly like Drac's list, but not sure about Beasts. How would we feel about swapping Beasts for Carol? Honestly I don't really get the argument for Carol. It's a great movie but I don't think it does anything terribly original, in fact it's kind of a throwback if anything.
Beasts is kind of one of those "The Jazz Singer because it was the first sound movie" type picks. Objectively it's kind of a milestone because it was the first example of the kind of distribution system that would disrupt the whole industry for the next decade... but that is more just a quirk of it being first than anything intrinsic to the movie itself, so it kind of a matter of perspective.

I'm fighting for Carol less for the film itself and more its reception and support as a key text in Queer cinema. It's not necessarily a film I'm ride or die for but none of the other candidates for 2015 feel right to me.

I feel like as far as queer cinema in the 2010s goes Moonlight and Call Me By Your Name had much wider cultural impacts, and if we have Tangerine get through that base is sort of covered.

Mad Max: Fury Road Star Wars: The Force Awakens The Big Short Straight Outta Compton Embrace of the Serpent
Final one will get no love, so I'd throw my support behind Tangerine. Not a lot of people have seen it, but I think the iPhone/iPad aesthetic of it is pretty neat and signaled a sort of actual indie/guerilla filmmaking movement that's pretty indicative of how most content today is being made. Plus Sean Baker rules!
Beasts of No Nation I get the urge to go with, but you mentioned The Jazz Singer and that movie at least had something actually innovative it could point to and not just being the first film a studio put out. Straight Outta Compton was a big movie that year, and I'd rather celebrate that than a movie that's basically just the launching pad for the Netflix machine we're unfortunately living in now.
