Are you suggesting that Bond's reboot owed nothing to the Bourne franchise? Because, at the time, that's pretty much all I can remember everyone saying about it. The difference being the Bourne films didn't hit you over the head with it "OMG YOU GUYS LOOK THIS IS TOTALLY A REAL PARKOUR GUY DOING THIS! COOL, HUH?" And how is putting parkour into a film influential anyway? Jackie Chan was doing those kind of close-combat action scenes decades before.

If it's between those two I'd vote V, though I honestly don't think either deserve to be on a top five list. I'd rather vote for Casino Royale.

Are you suggesting that Bond's reboot owed nothing to the Bourne franchise? It's obvious that Jason Bourne and Batman Begins had an influence on the tone and style of the Daniel Craig films. But when it comes to action scenes, James Bond has ALWAYS been in a class of its own. Even back when it was Roger Moore.

Well, Keaton's The General is the obvious choice. Don Juan was some sort of improvement in sound. The Adventures of Prince Achmed was an early animated feature before Disney. The Strong Man was Capra's first film and supposedly a comedy classic. Son of the Shiek seems to have an interesting story behind it and its star.
So those would be my choices.

The National Film Registry says... The Black Pirate Ella Cinders The General Hands Up! Mighty Like a Moose (must be a Canadian movie) So's Your Old Man Son of the Sheik The Strong Man I say... THE BAT - It's one of the early slasher films and got a 1959 remake starring Vincent Price. It's also one of the inspirations for Batman. DON JUAN - It is the first movie to use Vitaphone and that technology led to the first "talkie" in 1927. FAUST - The last German film by the director of Nosferatu. And alongside Nosferatu, it's considered one of the great horror movies of the silent era. THE GENERAL - It's a classic Buster Keaton movie. This one SHOULD be on everyone's list. THE SON OF THE SHEIK - It's an early example of a major Hollywood sequel. It was released two weeks before the death of Rudolph Valentino, one of the biggest movie stars of the 1920's. He was only 31 at the time.

Not the easiest year to find movies for (1925 and 1927 were great, but for whatever reason the film world seemed to stand still in 1926)
First thing's first: Are we counting The General as a 1926 film. IMDB lists it as such, but that seems to entirely be because it had its Tokyo premiere on 12/31/1926. I don't know that I would count that under normal circumstances, but we might be kind of desperate.
F.W. Murnau's Faust is a must.
There's also a film called Don Juan, which used a Vitaphone soudtrack to add music and sound effects (but not dialog)
The Black Pirate was a film that used an early form of technicolor (it didn't really work too well and caused a lot of projection problems)
There's something called The Adventures of Prince Achmed, which is the oldest surviving animated film.
Flesh and the Devil is supposed to be a very iconic Greta Garbo movie
There's Battling Butler, which is one of Buster Keaton's least known films, but in a year like this...

1. The General: Without a doubt the most famous film of the year. 2. Faust: Highly regarded F.W. Murnau film. 3. The Son of the Sheik: Another very famous film of its era. 4. The Adventures of Prince Achmed: Early animated film. 5. Don Juan: First feature film to have synchronized sound effects and score. Wikipedia also claims the film has the most kisses in film history, and that's clearly a big deal.

I don't know that I would count that under normal circumstances. You're right. GUYS, leave The General for 1927. Here are other options: THE ADVENTURES OF PRINCE ACHMED - The oldest surviving animated feature-length film. It's from Germany. THE BAT - Like I said... BATMAN. THE BLACK PIRATE - It experimented with an early version of Technicolor. DON JUAN - It was the first movie to use Vitaphone, which led to the first "talkie" in 1927. My updated list, Ian. The Adventure of Prince Achmed The Bat Don Juan Faust The Son of the Sheik
