I mean if we are including docs, Shoah has to be on there for 1985. I haven't seen it in its entirety (it clocks in at around 500 minutes I believe) but what I have seen is phenomenal and a landmark achievement in cinema.

I cannot remember, have we included docs? If so, which ones?
The original intention was to not include them, I just cant remember if we made an exception or not. Maybe it was shorts we made the exception for?

Maybe it was shorts we made the exception for? We did Nanook of the North and Haxan in 1922 and Man with a Movie Camera in 1929. In the sound era we've nominated them multiple times and been shot down.

Well, we've only added them if they are incredibly significant, we have made those exceptions.
Back to the Future is a no brainer. I can see an argument for the Breakfast Club. And Brazil, certainly.

Okay Back to the Future is for sure.
I'm just gonna through this out: is Ran important, or are we just picking it because its Kurasawa?
Also, what are peple's thoughts on Shoah, is it worth breaking the rule?

Also, what are peple's thoughts on Shoah, is it worth breaking the rule? I think Shoah is worth it. Also, I actually didn't think I'd put Ran initially, but I can't think of anything else I'd put instead. The film is a first-class epic and I think you can see an influence on subsequent films and it's also important as one of the last masterpieces from the golden age of world cinema.

Ran should 100% be on there for 1985. It's one of the best films of the decade and unlike anything else coming out at the time. It was the last epic film of his career and features some of the most stunning battle sequences ever, all in beautiful color. It's Seven Samurai but made in 1985. I feel Shoah should as well, it's too important to not include.

I'm willing to move Come and See for The Breakfast Club, though if Shoah doesn't count then I have a vote for Breakfast Club anyways.

Alright, well... I really wanted to leave docs, but since you guys have already convinced me to add some and since Shoah is definitely a special case, I suppose I will relent.

I would probably say Crouching Tiger for ushering in new popularity for Asian cinema in the west Best in Show for encapsulating that sort of humour X-Men for kicking off the very popular new superhero movie trend Gladiator for bringing back sword and sandals and requiem for a dream for being crazy.
