Seven was an awesome film but I believe it should be changed out for Apollo 13, the others should stay. Given that the "Serial Killer kills people in grotesque ways and leaves cryptic clues for the cops" formula has been so extensively ripped off, I disagree. Entire procedural TV shows seem to be based on Seven. Yea but one could argue that Seven was influenced by Manhunter. Shoot even Copycat came out a month after Seven, not entirely like it but a similiar film.

Manhunter doesn't deliver the same impact as Seven

Seven is a way better film than Manhunter, but this is about important films not which movie was the better that year.

There probably wouldn't be Saw, and by extension the torture porn genre in general, without Seven. Not that it was torture porn but it laid the groundwork for future films. It's also the golden standard for modern thrillers and it did a lot to propel David Fincher.

I agree it launched Finchers career this and Fight Club, but I feel as if the torture porn genre would have still came to be. The writers of Saw even stated that The Blair Witch Project influenced Saw.

If we're dropping one of the five we started with ( and that's a big "if") it should probably be The Usual Suspects.

"What's in the box?" is arguably the most iconic scene from any film that year. That alone warrants Seven's inclusion, in addition to what's already been mentioned.

Houston we have a problem originated from the real incident in the 70s not from the movie The real incident was "Houston, we've had a problem here", the film changed it to "Houston we have a problem", which is the line the film made famous.

Heat Toy Story Se7en Before Sunrise The Usual Suspects
Wish I could squeeze La Haine on there, but that director has been a hack since making that awesome film so not sure if it's retained much importance aside from being really good.

I dont know that its more iconic than "they may take our lives but they'll never take our freedom" Not to mention "Houston we have a problem" which is still used today. Yeah but that line seems to overshadow the film it self. Apollo 13 was a pretty popular movie in the day and it's probably still Ron Howard's best but I'm not sure it's had that great an influence moving forward, nor does it seem exceptionally popular (outside of the line) today.

Both movies are very popular. Sometimes I think you need to remove your cinephile blinders, which are desperate to elevate Seven above more populist fare.
Not that I don't think Seven should be included, but you are the one who brought up the infamous line idea.
Usual Suspects is the one I'm not sure about. Or Before Sunrise (again, I think this is our cinephilia getting in the way).

I do feel like Braveheart belongs here somewhere, I'm just not sure what I'd take out. Maybe Before Sunrise, but its a very high concept film and better than The Usual Suspects which is undoubtedly well known and a good film, but I think it's importance is generally its plot twist.

Well we are debating the most important films, and like I posed earlier in the thread what is more important? Its cultural impact or its cinematic one? I'm more inclined to gauge its cinematic relevance, but I can understand it from either angle.

Both movies are very popular. Sometimes I think you need to remove your cinephile blinders, which are desperate to elevate Seven above more populist fare. I'm not talking about some obscure European art house film, I'm talking about an immensely popular thriller which influenced a ton of films moving forward. I can see the argument against Before Sunrise. It isn't exceptionally popular among the general public, particularly when compared to big films like Apollo 13 and Braveheart, but the film is frequently cited as one of the greatest romances of all time, started a very unique trilogy of films, a clear precursor to Linklater's work on Boyhood, and also influenced every subsequent "two characters walk and talk" film made since. That's obviously a pretty niche genre, but it does exist, and Before Sunrise is the gold standard.

There are some other choices that could be considered deserving, but this is a very tough year with so many good and similar choices. That's why, after looking at Drac's list I didn't make my own. It has its merits.
I might have picked a couple different movies, but for similar reasons.

I would choose braveheart, seven, toy story, heat, and maybe apollo 13. I'm not convinced of usual suspects. What does it have other than a twist ending that caught on with people?

I think you could argue it ushered in an era of similar twist endings like Fight Club and The Sixth Sense. However I'd fight a lot harder for Before Sunrise than for Usual Suspects.
