I'm with Drac. I lean slightly towards Gremlins over Nightmare, but if others would prefer Craven's film then I can live with that.

It's a choice between
The creepy little kid friendly monster genre,co-catalyst of PG-13 movies
Or the movie that introduced the Freddie Krueger franchise AND Johnny Depp

Nightmare is a better film and a horror classic.
But I think it's less important than Gremlins.

Nightmare is definitely the better film. Is Gremlins really all that important? I don't think so. It's a decent enough movie, but really not as good as it could've been. Yeah, it definitely takes a satirical stance at capitalism and consumerism, especially critical during the Reagan era, but I don't think it's held up as well as the original Nightmare. I'm not voting for either movie, but I'd rather see Nightmare make it than Gremlins.

I think so. Maybe we should put it the last spot to a vote between Gremlins and Nightmare.

Nightmare for me. Gremlins? One of the 5 most important films of the year? Come on now.

Eh that's debatable, Nightmare has a pretty creative concept, and Gremlins is also the inferior film.

I vote Gremlins. PG-13 is a big factor influencing this.

Well if it must be between those two...I vote Nightmare. I like Gremlins more as movie but c'mon. It's Freddy. It's just more iconic, and it feels like that's what matters in this case.

Gremlins establishes a unique tone and strikes an innovative balance of horror, comedy, and Spielbergian blockbuster filmmaking. Nightmare is... overrated... and doesn't have a scene where someone stops to tell a story about their father being killed in a santa related accident.

That Santa monologue is awful, so shoehorned in for no reason. Joe Dante is not Spielberg, and Gremlins (though Nightmare can have the same said for it as well) never lives up to its potential or concept. I'm not the hugest fan of either of these movies getting in for this year really.

I'm not the hugest fan of either of these movies getting in for this year really. You can argue whether it's a good or bad scene, but the moment does still leave a mark on people. It also signifies the films interesting role as both a kids film and one that's also a little darker and more challenging (relatively) than kiddie fare and thus a strong example of the push for PG-13. Anyway, I agree that neither movie is really great, but they are both important and one of em does need to be here.

The Broadway Melody - first big musical of the sound era
In Old Arizona - first full outdoor sound talkie
On With the Show - first all color talkie
Hallelujah - first Hollywood film to have an all black cast
Atlantic - the first sound film made in Germany and the first sound Titanic movie simultaneously filmed in both languages.

Yeah, Broadway Melody is awful. It's also extremely dated. I'd say The Love Parade fills our musical quota just fine. I also don't think In Old Arizona, On With the Snow, or Atlantic are worthy either. I could however be swayed on Hallelujah!

They may not be great, but they are the first of their kind in those categories, and the name of the thread is IMPORTANT movies, not BEST movies. They are all important firsts in the industry.

They may not be great, but they are the first of their kind in those categories, and the name of the thread is IMPORTANT movies, not BEST movies. They are all important firsts in the industry. But they're minor firsts which would have been inevitable anyway. The first sound colour film for example isn't that big a deal when you consider that we already had sound films and colour films. Naturally someone would put the two together eventually, and outside of being the first, the specific use of these techniques does not seem to be wildly important. First sound film made in Germany is an interesting bit of trivia but given that it wasn't the first to use the technology I don't see why it should be considered important. Same with it being the first film version of Titanic. Interesting bit of trivia, but important? Not really. In Old Arizona being the first sound film shot on exteriors is a probably a bigger deal, but it's importance is tied exclusively to the technology which was developed independently and does not seem to have been utilized in any exceptional way. Hell, looking up the film it's real claim to fame is simply that director Raoul Walsh was set to play the lead but lost an eye, not any technological or cinematic importance. I might entertain The Broadway Melody due its tremendous success at the time, but the film is a dated slog that no one cares about anymore and is largely only seen by assholes like me who think it's a good idea to see every Best Picture winner. Modern reviews on the film reflect this rhetoric. Comparatively, Un Chien Andalou, Pandora's Box, and Man with a Movie Camera were all grand artistic achievements that pushed the medium. These are works that people still look at, study, and discover. The Love Parade is not considered to be on the same level nor was it the first big musical, but it was a big musical which helped save Paramount from bankrupty, was the first sound film from prolific and important filmmaker Ernest Lubitsch, and actually utilized innovative technique in order to get around the clunkiness of early sound technology and thus do something exceptional with the format. Anway, my research has also revealed to be that The Cameraman is actually from 1928. So, my revised list: Un Chien Andalou Man with a Movie Camera Pandora's Box The Love Parade Hallelujah!
