1984 gave us two iconic, and instantly recognizable, theme songs: Three.

I've never heard of Stranger Than Paradise, but yes it sounds like it was a big influence on filmmaking

Terminator, The Ghostbusters This is Spinal Tap Stranger Than Paradise Gremlins I considered Gremlins for creating the "small monsters terrorizing" genre but thought that was a little too small a legacy. However if we need a representation for the coming of PG-13 then I'll drop Nightmare.

1984 - has same name as the year it came out, revolutionary CHUD - shed a new light on the topic of cannibalism and started a national dialogue Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai - no-brainer Star Trek 3: The Search for Spock - the first star trek movie in which they search for Spock Revenge of the Nerds - reminded us that we have to keep beating down the nerds

Lol I was thinking about making a list like that. There are a lot more of those Yeah that time they had to search for Spock because in the TV series they already looked for his brain

However if we need a representation for the coming of PG-13 then I'll drop Nightmare. I'm not going to fight to the death for it, but I think Gremlins' genre influence runs a little deeper than that. It's the gold standard for fun chaotic semi-kid friendly horror.

Temple of Doom lit the PG13 fire two weeks before Gremlins, just saying True, but that's basically Temple's only claim to importance. Gremlins also inspired it's own sub-genre and, as Drac pointed out, is a pretty famous example of how to make a film with that kind of tone. Plus, we already have Raiders.

Ghostbusters The Terminator Stranger than Paradise This is Spinal Tap Once Upon a Time in America
Tough to choose 5. Paris, Texas and Amadeus are awesome, and of course I have tons of fun movies from the year that I enjoy. Tough, tough year, this debate should be a good one.

I had it ahead of Gremlins at first, but Drac's argument swayed me. Famous as it is, I think Halloween can stand in for the slasher movie craze and we also have Scream listed already.

My preferences have been made known. Don't care terribly about the other slot but I'm going to fight for Stranger Than Paradise, the populists have gotten a lot this year and I want at least one indie to make it.
