Animal Crackers King of Jazz - first film with pre-recorded soundtrack Morocco - early epic with a lesbian kiss?

Sorry! Meant to comment on this but got sidetracked. I don't think we need Animal Crackers since Duck Soup and A Night in the Opera are listed and we can always include The Cocoanuts for 1929 if we want their early stuff. I can get behind dropping Hells Angels for King of Jazz though.

To be honest I really don't know enough about any of these films other than All Quiet on the Western Front and The Golden Age to have an opinion either way.

All Quiet on the Western Front
The Big Trail (John Wayne's first leading role)
Hell's Angels (only color footage in Jean Harlow's career)
Soup to Nuts (first Three Stooges appearance in film)
Animal Crackers

Dracula's list is solid, even though I'd like for Animal Crackers to be included.

L'Âge d'or (Highly influential and controversial surrealist film) Borderline (Interesting avant garde film that tackled inter-racial relationships when it was a taboo and gave a big role to Paul Robeson) The Big House (One of the first prison movies) Hell's Angels (Early air combat film, it's the movie that Howard Hughes is making in The Aviator) All Quiet on the Western Front (Pretty famous early anti-war film) Alright, we're going with this. Next year: 1944

1. Double Indemnity: Film noir has roots before this, but Double Indemnity might just be the first time the genre was fully formed.
2. Henry V: Considered one of the first Shakespeare film adaptations to be commercially and artistically successful. The film also set the stage for other Shakespeare adaptations from Hollywood.
3. Laura: Pretty famous mystery/noir film.
4. A Canterbury Tale: I can't say I'm overly found of this film, but it seems like one of the more well-regarded efforts of the year and given the Archers will likely remain tenants of great cinema I expect this film's reputation to only grow as time goes by. It's also a film that a lot of people have made efforts to analyse in the last several years.
5. Ivan the Terrible Part I: The Ivan the Terrible films have a fascinating history in that they were basically mandated by Stalin who ended up loving the first, but banning the second part, which wasn't released until 1958. The film is significant for being made in a tumultuous time in Russian history while also questioning the politics of the time. Also the final works of Sergei Eisenstein.

Arsenic and Old Lace (just one of my all time favorites and a really good film)
Double Indemnity (great film)
Going My Way (probably Crosby's best, won 7/10 Oscars and was the highest grossing film)
Lifeboat (first of Hitch's limited setting films).
National Velvet (highly acclaimed movie)

Double Indemnity Ivan the Terrible, Part I Laura Arsenic and Old Lace Meet me in St. Louis
I hated A Canterbury Tale, that was a painful one to get through. One of the movies where I couldn't wait for it to be over. Only Powell/Pressburger film I didn't like actually, and I've seen almost all of their movies.

1. Ghostbusters: A pop culture juggernaut. One of the quintessential films of the decade in terms of popularity.
2. The Terminator: Created an iconic character, made Arnold a star, and introduced James Cameron to mainstream action filmmaking. Also the time travel storyline at the heart of the film has been riffed on a lot and it's vision of the future is still replicated.
3. This is Spinal Tap: Not the first mockumentary film, but certainly the one that made the format famous and perfected it. Widely considered one of the best comedies of all-time and many of its gags are still extremely famous.
4. Stranger than Paradise: Important film in independent cinema that helped set the stage for the boom that came about in the late 80s and 90s.
5. A Nightmare on Elm Street: A massive success which spawned a huge franchise, launched one of the most famous horror villains in cinema history, and is generally considered one of the best horror films of all-time. I don't really agree, but there's no denying the film is widely loved and is probably the main reason Wes Cravern is held in such high regard.
Honourable Mentions:
Beverly Hills Cop: I know this film was big in its day, but does anyone really care anymore? It seems to be widely regarded as an 80s relic.
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom: Under appreciated.
Paris, Texas: Great movie, but it's influence is minimal.
Amadeus: Also an awesome movie, but I'm not sure how important it is.
Blood Simple: Hello, Coen brothers.
Sixteen Candles: It's one of John Hughes other big movies, but I'd say Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller are sufficient representation.

1984 gave us the PG-13 rating:
