This must be what it feels like when warring nations achieve peace. I was going with Office Space because I dont want Magnolia. What is your beef with Magnolia? It's one thing if you think it's an obstacle for the movie you want but if you're actively campaigning against it that seems... odd. I'm pretty sure Ian kind of hates PTA.

Office Space's inclusion is a goddamn travesty.

Like I said before, I am more voting against the choice to go pretentious to avoid going mainstream. But its fine, I also dont care much about American Beauty on the list. I do think 6th sense desrves it more, but I'm clearly fighting a losing battle on that one.

Based on the arguments Drac, Sno and I have put forth, I think it's pretty clear we aren't voting for Magnolia to be "pretentious to avoid going mainstream".

Well, sort of. It jump started the hyperlink movement, yes, but like NE pointed out that it didn't go that many places. Otherwise it was mostly speculation that it will be studied in future years. That could be true, could not. We are 15 years out and outside of PTA worshipers, I'm not sure that's happening.
But I suppose I'll concede, my other supporters have quit already. Its too bad that a movie which actually impacted a large section of the movie-going public, the 6th sense, is getting bumped out though.

Put in sixth sense over Office Space. Meh, a large part of my draw with Office Space was keeping Magnilia out. If that isn't happening then sixth sense should get in

I'd definitely be happier with The Sixth Sense in than Office Space as long as Magnolia is safe.

I will say if you dicks don't put Spinal Tap in for 1984 you're clearly showing an anti comedy bias.

That's the one year Dracula and PG Cooper are gonna look like comedy haters. You know they'll vote against Ghostbusters, Beverly Hills Cops, Sixteen Candles, Police Academy, Revenge of the Nerds, etc.

I'll make sure at least one of of those get in over Amadeus. I'm the biggest Amadeus fan on this site - but it isn't an "important" movie. How many biographies about classical musicians have their been in the last 30 years? How many movies have taken an historical icon and brought him or her to our level. Quite frankly, Amadeus isn't even that well known. Unless you took a music class at some point in your education, Amadeus probably isn't even on your radar. Once Upon a Time in America also isn't important. That movie got butchered in it's American release and wasn't restored for 20 years. And by that point, mafia movies had come and gone. So, really, Ghostbusters IS the defining movie of 1984. The fact that millions of people are so pissed off about the remake proves it.

The Birth of a Nation (... yeah, I know, sorry) Les Vampires (famed French serial that had an influence on German expressionism and film noir) The Tramp (Caplin short that introduced the famous tramp character) Inspiration (First non-pornographic film to feature full female nudity) Carmen (Popular DeMille movie)

Same as Drac's list except I would drop Carmen and list Pool Sharks.
First appearance of W.C. Fields, and a very early example of stop motion animation.

It's a no brainer. 1984 was a giant comedy year. That's the one year Dracula and PG Cooper are gonna look like comedy haters. Pool Sharks sounds cool, I'm fine switch out Carmen for that. It's a pretty good little film. I just watched it on YouTube. You can see a little of his famous character from The talkies in it when he dumps a little boy onto the ground and steals his chair lol

I can live with that list, great debate btw guys. I'm bummed Malkovich didn't get more love, but I guess people aren't as big of Spike Jonze fans on here as me.
And now that we're at 1915... everyone will scatter.
For me the only musts are The Birth of a Nation and Les Vampires. For the rest... yeah Dracula's list is fine with me.

L'Âge d'or (Highly influential and controversial surrealist film) Borderline (Interesting avant garde film that tackled inter-racial relationships when it was a taboo and gave a big role to Paul Robeson) The Big House (One of the first prison movies) Hell's Angels (Early air combat film, it's the movie that Howard Hughes is making in The Aviator) All Quiet on the Western Front (Pretty famous early anti-war film)
