Hardest year yet to pick just 5.
These 3 are a lock:
The Matrix The Sixth Sense The Blair Witch Project
Now to decide which of the following 3 to cut:
Fight Club Being John Malkovich American Beauty

you're telling me no one will care about Magnolia in 50 years but they will American Pie, Austin Powers, and Office Space? Maybe not Austin Powers and American Pie, but definitely Office Space. Mike Judge has already proven to be ahead of his time. Idiocracy, a movie destroyed by the studio, is being resurrected in pop culture because of Donald Trump. Office Space will continue to connect with audiences - especially as real jobs get replaced by robots and humans end up wasting their life behind a desk. The British and American versions of "The Office" made Office Space redundant and effectively replaced it as the definitive spoof of office culture.

the definitive spoof of office culture. Office Space is WAY more realistic than The Office. This is like saying Clerks II replaced Clerks as the definitive spoof of minimum wage jobs.

The Matrix Blair Witch The Sixth sense
Those are locks.
Fight Club Audition - both the makers of Saw and Hostel cite this as a primary influence.

Office Space revitalized the cult movie in the 90-00's. It's a movie, like Idiocracy, that the studio tried to bury, then word of mouth combined with video/cable sales built the audience. Much much more of a cultural phenomenon then Magnolia, and endlessly referenced in desk jobs since its release.

Yeah I agree, Office Space deserves a place long before Magnolia.

Strongly disagree re: Office Space, its cult popularity was a blip and no one cares that much anymore. When they end up writing future text books about film history that movie isn't going to warrant a mention, Magnolia might.

Every other movie nominated this year is more important than Magnolia. Including American Pie.

I would say Office Space makes the list. I still find myself quoting the movie more often than not.

Thinking on it more, Eternal Sunshine is already serving our list as a representation of Charlie Kaufman and his influence, so I'll be pulling my support for Being John Malkovich and shifting it to The Blair Witch Project. It heralded the found-footage thing, was a unique project in its day, and had a bold marketing campaign. Also, while I do think Drac makes an excellent case for Phantom Menace, there doesn't seem to be a lot of takers. Plus, The Two Towers was largely voted in for the mo-cap work in creating Gollum and while Phantom was certainly first, I think that entry is enough for representing that aspect of filmmaking. I'll switch my support to American Beauty, which still has great crossover appeal with critics and general audiences and taps into the discontentment with both suburbia and mundane careers that a lot of work was expressing at the time.
So, my revised list:
1. The Matrix 2. Fight Club 3. Magnolia 4. The Blair Witch Project 5. American Beauty

Being John Malkovich is a better representation of Kaufman, plus it's bolder in its meta elements (Malkovich playing himself) as well as being the first. I think both belong on the list, I'm just saying that I think Malkovich is actually the more important film between the two. Plus it has Spike Jonze directing and signals his feature debut.

But Eternal Sunshine is already listed, so we've already got Kaufman covered. I think it should certainly be considered, but, well, this is a tight year with a lot of films bringing a lot of different elements to the table. Ultimately, too much of Being John Malkovich's importance lies in elements which are already reflected in the list, in my opinion.

Yeah that makes sense, but I don't feel it should be left out simply because we did the year 2004 before we did 1999. Both of those films are among the most important of the year and deserve to be on there, in my opinion.

Alright, The Matrix, Fight Club, and Blair Witch are on everyone's ballot. Beyond that Magnolia's on 3, American Beauty is on 3, Being John Malkovich is on 2, The Sixth Sense is on 2 and then there are stray votes for Audition and The Phantom Menace (although Deexan actually voted for six and never made his final cut). I'm willing to admit defeat on the Phantom Menace front but I'm not sure what I'd switch my vote to.

Won't speak for Sabin and Ian, but they looked to be leaning that way as well.
