Anyway... This might actually be the best Marvel Universe movie. That’s high praise coming from me. This would be like Doomsday loving a Christopher Nolan movie. I’ve enjoyed all the Marvel Universe movies but I can’t really say I loved any of them... until now. Most of the praise has to go to Josh Brolin as Thanos. He’s up there with Heath Ledger’s Joker as far as I’m concerned. It’s a fully developed character with a very specific moral agenda. You guys are gonna love it. As far as plot and character development goes, that’s where I’m not sure if this movie belongs with the Dark Knights of the world. It’s great for Marvel Universe but is it great for cinema? I think Marvel chewed more than it could handle. Watching the movie you could tell what the actor availabilities were because this isn’t the GIGANTIC Avengers gathering that people are expecting. This isn’t Avengers Part 1 from 2012. They break the characters off into groups... and it was mostly unnecessary. This is reeeaaallly a Guardians of the Galaxy movie. That’s where the emotional core of the movie is . The trailer sells scenes like Black Panther saying, “get this man a shield” but you don’t give a fuck about Black Panther nor Captain America. It’s just a waste of screen time. Just call it what it is and make it what it is: Guardians of the Galaxy Meet Some Avengers. And the ending is just preposterous. I don’t mean the actual Thanos-Infinity Gauntlet finale. That shit is fucking amazing. I mean the ending as in... the next movie is Ant-Man and the Wasp. Like... come on, Marvel. No one is gonna finish watching Infinity War and say, “well... can’t wait for Ant-Man and the Wasp.” Just release your damn Captain Marvel movie, which is gonna dick slap Wonder Woman, and then Avengers 4 and then release stupid shit like Ant-Man and the Wasp. Don’t waste my time, Marvel. Anyway... I’ll just leave you guys with this song. |

For me, it's the first high profile, highly marketed, big franchise release that has really delivered. Moreso than the new Star Wars, moreso than other Marvel movies, throw in Jurassic Worlds or whatever else there is to consider. Infinity War just hit it out of the park. It didn't have to though, it could have been a big mess. For as much as they crammed in they did a really good job of doing it. Thanos isn't just a great villain, he's a great character. It's neat how it shows his own conflict which motivates his desires for genocide. I think everybody was waiting for 'that' Marvel movie that breaks itself of the chains of the Marvel formula, doesn't go the safe route and really makes a go at trying to be a great comic book film. I think Infinity War is all that and then some. It's certainly the Marvel movie that I've been waiting for and I think it more than meets the lofty expectations that a decade of Marvel films set for it.
I know it's against Doomsday type to gush over things but I can't remember the last time I had this much fun going to the movies, I really can't.

Alright, so some of my initial thoughts. -I don't know why people are going OMGOMG over the ending. Clearly, obviously they're going to find a way to undo all of that. They aren't killing Dr. Strange, Black Panther, Nick Fury, Bucky and everyone else who died. I also wouldn't be surprised if they undid Gamora as well. In fact I would bet on it.
-It bothered me at first that Strange gave up the Time Stone so quickly and easily but then I remembered how he looked into the future and witnessed the one possible outcome where they defeat Thanos. That probably was a factor in that outcome which is why he gave it up when Thanos threatened Tony when anyone else would have certainly let him die.
-Ebony Maw (had to look up his name) was a great henchman and I was pretty pumped when Tony took him out.
-Vision sucked in this movie. I hope he stays dead.
-So Spider-Man's suit is essentially Iron Man's now? Minus a few missiles?
-I don't know how people feel one way or the other about it but I really enjoyed Red Skull's reappearance. It makes me wonder if his fate will reflect what happens to Thanos at the end of all this.
-I didn't know what the post-credits scene was all about until someone in the row behind me said 'Captain Marvel!' I know nothing about Captain Marvel but is this supposed to be a massive reveal? I never understood Captain Marvel to be one of the titans (no pun) of the Marvel universe. Maybe I'm wrong, I don't know. Regardless, it was another post-credits scene that was underwhelming which is par for the course. All in all, Neverending said in the first post that this might be the best movie in the Marvel universe. I think it definitely is. Pumped to see where it all leads to next May. |
