I'm going to watch Season 4 in the next few days, I've got some time off for Thanksgiving. I figure I can probably get through the entire season before this time next week.

Now that I have that out of the way...
Two Swords (401) To start with, I have seen this episode before. When Season 4 premiered earlier this year in April, I started watching right away. I just sometimes have the bad habit of falling behind an episode or two, and as that number grows I tend to lose interest in watching along with it and I usually wait until after it's all done to catch up. Why I waited this long, I don't know. Everything from here on out though is new to me... except I do know that Joffrey dies in the next episode, I had that spoiled for me. Oh well.
Beginning the episode with Tywin melting down Ned's old sword was great, seems to be foreshadowing dark circumstances for the season. I think most episodes of 'Game of Thrones' are either about moving the chess pieces into position or slamming them together, this was definitely the former. I like Oberyn right off the bat, he'll be an interesting addition to the cast. The season is setting up nicely with Dany and the Unsullied moving to war apparently and Jon being let off the hook at the Wall. I liked the ending a lot with the Hound and Arya, he must really like chicken. Sort of a twisted buddy comedy.
Good episode, good start to the season.
Season Four Ranked: 1. Two Swords (401)
I have off on Black Friday while the girlfriend does not, so I suspect a marathon is in order that day. While watching the episode last night I had forgotten how much I loved it, so it shouldn't be too hard to convince myself to sit in front of my computer all day.

Decided to take out an episode on lunch.
The Lion and the Rose (402) This was one of the finest episodes in the series, and the 'purple wedding' is one of the finest moments of the series as well. I will miss Jack Gleeson's Joffrey, I always felt that Gleeson delivered one of the better performances of the cast. He's just so unlikeable, with zero redeeming character traits. I don't think audiences are used to seeing a character like him. I'm very curious to see where the show goes from here, I'm assuming Tyrion will face a trial or something of that nature.
I also really enjoyed the sequence in the woods with Bran, Hodor, and co. Bran's story is one of the more interesting ones to me just because I have absolutely no idea where they're going with it. My issue with his character is only that he's on the main stage a little too often. Devoting five minutes here and there like the powers that be did here is perfect. I really don't care for what they're doing with Theon/Reek and the Boltons. Just not interesting to me. The rest of the episode though was terrific.

Keep in mind I made this before season 4.
10. Blackwater - Episode 2.9
It's odd to make the list with only one great scene. Lucky for this episode, that one scene is basically half the episode. Besides the aforementioned completely awesome wildfire scene, there's some good battle scenes following, Tyrion gets to kick-ass and even get respect for the first time. Meanwhile, the scenes with a drunk Cersei are pretty amusing, as are the scenes with The Hound who finally says "F**k the king," both literally and figuratively.
9. Winter is Coming - Episode 1.1
The writers had a tough task to introduce so much and so many people in the first episode, and in retrospect, they did a great job. We got a great idea about everyone's character, we learn a lot of history, and we understand the dynamic going on between the Lannisters/Baratheons, Starks and Targaryens.
There's great scenes such as the opening one with the white walkers which is great based on cinematography alone. There's also an ending with a little boy being pushed out a window after witnessing incest, just to make sure people understand what they're getting into.
8. Rains of Castamere - Episode 3.9
I'm still not sure how I feel about this one as a whole. It's possible that in the long run, I won't think of this as a top 10 episode. but for the time being, the Red Wedding is wonderfully crafted. They had the challenge of executing one of the most gruesome twists in TV history but without making it gratuitous or heavily foreshadowed for non-book readers, and they did very well. I can't be sure since I've read the book, but it feels like I would never have seen it coming because of one little thing, and that's the little joke where Walder Frey makes this face towards Robb when his cousin is getting married. The look seems to say "She's pretty good looking, eh? And that could have been you." Not only is this funny and light-hearted, but it makes a reference to a future that has Robb Stark in it made by the guy who has already plotted his demise.
Meanwhile, the stuff between Arya and the Hound is very interesting. Notably very early on when The Hound knows that Arya is afraid she won't make it in time because she's so close. It's foreshadowing, but it's also an interesting psychological moment from the Hound.
Also great is the clash of Jon Snow's group with Bran Stark's. It's a big as reunion as Martin will give us. At least it's interesting as they're not both human at the time. There's also that great moment when Bran goes into Hodor.
7. Lord Snow - Episode 1.3
It's a bit harder to explain why this one's so good. It's not so much that there's a couple brilliant scenes, but instead an incredibly consistent great episode. It begins with a good exchange between Jaime and Ned in the Great Hall, followed by a great scene with Cersei and Joffrey where we learn what kind of king he'll be, but also that Cersei's trying her best with him.
There's a scene later on that I really like where Robert, Jaime and Barristen Selmy are discussing their first kills. Really, this episode is a wonderful character episode. It's still very early in the series, and now that the characters have been introduced, they can now interact. And the writing is wonderful.
This is also the episode where Daenerys starts to get the upper hand on her brother, which is pretty funny and ironic considering he set this whole thing up with the Dothraki. The episode ends with Arya getting sword lessons from Syrio Forel.
6. The Wolf and the Lion - Episode 1.5
Another episode with little brilliance, just excellence all the way through. It starts out with some great jousting scenes which ends with a sword fight between brothers, The Hound and The Mountain. There's the scene where Tyrion saves Catelyn's life in a battle, despite being taken to trial, and there's Lysa, Cat's crazy sister.
Later on we get to see dragon skulls and our first Varys and Littlefinger confrontation. A great scene where Ned refuses to give consent to have Daenerys kills and has to resign, and then later there's the aforementioned scene between Robert and Cersei where we learn a lot about them and their past and present.
The episode ends with Jaime ambushing Ned where they fight, and Jory gets killed.
5. The Pointy End - Episode 1.8
A lot of great scenes in this one. Right off the bat we get the sacking of the Red Keep where Syrio Forel defends Arya in a blaze of glory and Arya gets her first kill. We learn about Varys' motive from his own mouth: "To serve The Realm. Someone must."
Robb calls the banners and Jon gets to fight a white walker. I was always looking forward to first seeing this to see the glowing blue eyes and was disappointed to find them barely luminescent, but it's still a very good scene. Later, Robb purposely tells a spy bad info, and Barristan Selmy is forced into retirement, and does so as a bad-ass. Also notable is Sansa begging Joffrey for her father's life; the first signs of courage from her.
And across the pond, Drogo fights Mago and rips his tongue out through his throat.
4. The Kingsroad - Episode 1.2
Tyrion slaps Joffrey and then later has a great scene with Jon on their way to the Wall where he brings up his opinions on the useless purpose of the Wall. Bran is attacked but is then saved by Summer (I always love when pets come to the rescue.) Dany begins her climb to the top by gaining power over Khal Drogo by use of the cowgirl position. There's a great scene where Arya and Nymeria fight with Joffrey where she learns a lesson on not messing with those in charge (or does she). And then of course there's one of my favorite scenes at the end where the killing of Lady coincides with Bran waking up.
3. Kissed by Fire - Episode 3.5
It opens with a great battle between Beric Dondarrion and The Hound where The Hound wins, but Dondarrion is resurrected. Later on on there's a touching farewell between Arya and Gendry (You'd be my lady"), and there's the heavy scene where Robb decides to execute Rickard Karstark for killing the young Lannisters. Beric Dondarrion and Arya have a fireside chat, which I had on the top scenes list, and Jon and Ygritte get it on. We finally get to meet Stannis' wife, who's an interesting character, as well as his daughter Shireen who's a good addition as well. Jaime tells his side of the story of the sacking of King's Landing. (Personally, I would have liked to have seen it filmed, but, budget.) And to finish it off, Grey Worm shows his appreciation to Dany for freeing him.
2. The Old Gods and the New - Episode 2.6
Wonderful opening where Theon "takes" Winterfell, as I described before for a few reasons. Another top scene later where Joffrey and Co. are attacked in King's Landing. Meanwhile in Harrenhal, there's more good Arya/Tywin scenes, as well as the part where Jaqen Hagar kills the second person just as he's walking to tell Tywin about her. And then there's also great scenes with Jon and Ygritte meeting for the first time, along with her incessant flirting.
1. Fire and Blood - Episode 1.10
Cat and Robb grieve, and plot revenge, after the killing of Ned Stark. Joffrey commits his first act of tyranny in this great scene involving the removal of a musicians tongue, followed by Sansa finally talking back to him. Even better is later on when he shows her her father's head, and almost gets shoved off a ledge (see picture above). The look on her face in close-up is fantastic.
Robb gets donned "King of the North." Dany has to kill Drogo by pillow, a horrible death for a warrior like him. There's the aforementioned scene with Pycelle where he's spry only when alone. Varys and Littlefinger have a good chat, as they often do. Mormont decides to go on the offensive and calls the Night's Watch to arms and to the other side of the wall. (I hate how so many characters in TV shows sit and wait for things to happen to them. It was refreshing to see Mormont say "F**k it, we're going out there.")
And then of course there's the best scene in the series where it appears Dany is going off the deep end, but instead comes out stronger than ever with three dragons.

Good list.
Breaker of Chains (403) Ah, the infamous rape scene that I've heard so much about. I agree with what a lot of people have said, it felt very out of character for Jaime up to this point. So either he's trending in a different direction now, or this was a one-off goof. I know some people said that it started to become consensual during the act, I did not get that impression at all. That was just rape.
Tommen seems like he might be an interesting character, especially if Tywin is going to wear him like a puppet. Good (re-)introduction to the future king. I also liked the scene between Tyrion and Podrick, hopefully Pod isn't gone for good. If so, kudos to him for being one of the first characters this show has ever written off without blood being spilled. Seeing that Sansa's manipulator was Littlefinger was good too, curious to see where that goes.
I think the highlight of the episode was the ending though with Dany and the Unsullied. Visually very cool; I know it's not their intent, but I'm hoping this breaks out into war. Also, no dragons? Another very good episode.
Season Four Ranked: 1. The Lion and the Rose (402) 2. Two Swords (401) 3. Breaker of Chains (403)
I'm watching this much faster than I thought I would have time for, finishing the season by the end of the week seems very feasible. This season is on pace to be the best yet in my opinion. After I'm done, maybe I'll do a cumulative top ten list like you did Jibbs.

Personally, I still think the rape scene is permanently damaging to Jaime's character. It's going to be difficult for an audience to sympathize with him from now on. A very different scenario from the books, where he's come to be a favorite.

If people can get over the fact that he pushed an innocent little boy out of a window to his assumed death whilst banging his own sister I'm sure they can get over a rape.

Yeah. While my mind didn't specifically go back to him pushing Bran out the window, I'll admit the rape didn't bother me as much as it apparently did everybody else. Cersei was a little distant with him in the next episode, but I guess I don't see much lingering effect personally.
Oathkeeper (404) Great episode. I was a little caught off guard, I'm not used to this show being quite so forward with information as it appeared to be here. They didn't just come right out and tell us exactly what's going on, but looking into the belly of the beast wasn't something I expected so (relatively) soon in the overall series. After doing a little digging online it looks like this wasn't in the book, and instead presented here first... and we know GRRM told the showrunners a few secrets that they needed in case (when) they surpassed GRRM in the speed of the story.
I chuckled a few times at the Kings Landing story with Pod squiring for Brienne now and Jaime's scenes with the group and Tyrion. I'm also excited to see what happens at the Wall with Bran and company. Dany and Littlefinger's stories were also solid and on point. The season feels like it's really firing on all cylinders now.

Certainly didn't seem like it was consensual.
First of His Name (405) So... did we get confirmation that Littlefinger was responsible for the poisoning of Jon Arryn and set all of this in motion? Did Jon and Lysa have a loveless marriage, or was there some other problem? I know I've read a lot of theories about how the series will end with Petyr on the Iron Throne and that it's this kind of stuff that will put him there, but I just don't really like the character. All of his scheming sometimes feel like it's done just for the sake of it, while the more interesting story is happening across the Narrow Sea or at the Wall or in King's Landing. Maybe that will change over time.
Why does Arya want to kill Beric Dondarrion or the Red Woman? I understood the rest (except for Thoros of Myr, but I don't even know who the fuck that is, I swear to god I need a list of characters and quick descriptions next to me when I'm watching from now on), but I couldn't remember her reasoning for those two. Arya is the angriest girl in all of Westeros. Also, going back to my earlier point, sometimes the series makes it harder to remember somebody when they pop in and out of each others' stories. Like Locke for example. I didn't mention it in my last 'review', but when he showed up at the Wall I did a double take and then spent 5 minutes on a Game of Thrones wiki because I wasn't sure if it was the same person or they just cast a look-a-like. Ah! I was glad he was killed off along with all the other assholes at Craster's Keep.
Good episode, but the weakest of the season so far.

Much of her (early) behavior has to be chalked up to her immaturity. She's still a young girl, after all.

The rape isn't canon, per se. The creators of the show said it was suppose to be consensual in the end. It was rape in the books too. The chapter was written from Jaimes point of view though, so you have to piece it together. His POV is that they've done it before, he's yearned for her for so long, etc. But in her POV she s physically disgusted by him after his hand was lost and is no longer attracted to him: something they didn't highlight much in the show. Put both together, it's clearly always been rape.

The Laws of Gods and Men (406)Pretty good episode. Tyrion's trial was great, excited to see the trial by combat. I assume Oberyn is involved because I feel like I heard that somewhere, not sure who he's fighting though I guess or who is on which side. Shae is a bitch. Hopefully she gets what's coming to her, and soon. As for the rest of the episode, couple of quick thoughts: - Can they just kill off Theon/Reek? Maybe I'm in the minority but he is the least interesting element of the show at this point for me. I also didn't like that Ramsay Snow was such a skilled combatant. He seems like a punk bitch more than anything.
- I liked seeing Braavos and Stannis/Davos there, excited to see where that goes. More Stannis is a good thing.
- Dragon! Dany's story was pretty minimal this week, but I suspect it'll play a part in the future.
Good episode in general. I think that's it for me for today. Tomorrow I'm going to marathon through the rest of the season.

Ramsay Snow being skilled in combat didn't make much sense to me either. And yeah, Theon's chapters/scenes are more monotonous than anything else. His character just isn't as "alive" as the others.

I'm with ya Torn. The Theon scenes in this show are awful. And the "rescue" scene in particular was completely pointless.

Best Dany episode was in season 3 and her moment when she used the unsullied to kill the Slavers. She pretty much is boring in season 4. Arya and Hound and Tyrion owned season 4.
