Marathon time!
Mockingbird (407) Oh, the Mountain. That's fun. How many times are they going to recast him? I'm glad they didn't bring back the actor from Season 2 at least, he was not an intimidating presence. Much better here. Arya killing Rorge with the Hound was awesome, and Sandor discussing his burn and his brother was good too. The conversations between Tyrion, Jaime, Bronn, and finally Oberyn were highlights. I almost had to question I was still watching 'Game of Thrones' when Oberyn said he would be Tyrion's champion, not used to seeing something happy happen on this show. The downside is that I immediately thought it was good to have another strong male protagonist on the show... and since I've thought similar things about Ned, Robert, and Drogo (to an extent), that seems like a bad omen for their duel.
It was funny watching Sansa and Robin bicker. Sansa has finally met the male equivalent of her immaturity. Petyr pushing Lysa through the Moondoor was amazing. I've been wanting her to die more or less since the moment we met her back in the first season. Good riddance. Great episode, the best of the season up to this point.
The Mountain and the Viper (408) Parts of this episode were excellent, parts were... less than that. I'm still not wild about Reek, but at least it was a little more tolerable here with him pretending to be Theon and slowly cracking under the pressure. I also liked Grey Worm and his lusting after Missandei, although it felt a little awkward. Halfway through their scenes I found myself thinking the show has come a long way since the first season with Ned and the Starks and etc. Here we have two relatively unimportant characters on screen with nobody else around them, just interesting I guess. Jorah's banishment was good as well.
That fight was insane. I sort of expected Oberyn to lose, but not graphically like that lol. Very intense. I guess this show wouldn't be this show if there wasn't a major character death every few episodes, now we've had two in the last two. Great episode.
Season Four Ranked: 1. Mockingbird (407) 2. The Lion and the Rose (402) 3. The Mountain and the Viper (408) 4. The Laws of Gods and Men (406) 5. Oathkeeper (404) 6. Two Swords (401) 7. Breaker of Chains (403) 8. First of His Name (405)

The Watchers on the Wall (409) One of the best episodes of the series. War, giants, mammoths, what's not to love? I was kind of sad to see several members of the Watch killed like Grenn and Pyp, but more so to see Ygritte die especially after she and Jon smiled at each other. I was hoping Jon would be able to reunite with her at some point, so that's disappointing that won't happen now. I think this episode officially made Jon my favorite character on the series... but I suppose that means he'll probably die soon too as I don't have much luck with characters I've really taken a liking to (Ned, Robert, Drogo, Robb, etc.). I guess I don't really have much else to say since we were confined to Castle Black, but I thought this was a perfect episode.
The Children (410) STANNIS. Jesus, I kind of forgot he and his men were coming. That was awesome. Looks like the Mountain is about to become Frankenstein's Monster, also awesome. Cool seeing the dragons again despite the notion it seemed like it might be the last time for a while. Lots of deaths too. So long Tywin, Shae, Jojen and... the Hound? Not so sure on that one.
I'm very interested in what Bran is doing. Forest children and an army of skeleton warriors? That seems a little far-fetched even for this show and this world. Good episode. Not looking forward to the wait for Season 5 now.
Season Four Ranked: 1. The Watchers on the Wall (409) 2. Mockingbird (407) 3. The Lion and the Rose (402) 4. The Children (410) 5. The Mountain and the Viper (408) 6. The Laws of Gods and Men (406) 7. Oathkeeper (404) 8. Two Swords (401) 9. Breaker of Chains (403) 10. First of His Name (405)

I read that yeah. I've heard they're also going to work flashbacks into the show too. I think it'd be killer if the flashbacks were spread throughout the season and they told the story of Robert's Rebellion.

I've been waiting for Robert's Rebellion flashbacks for 4 years. Kudos to them for holding out so long.
Come ooooon Sean Bean cameo...

As a non-reader of the books I might not know what I'm talking about, but that sounds like a bad idea. So far I've been loving that they haven't stooped to flashbacks at all in this show.

Not all of us think of it as "stooping." We're not talking Lost here, but a flashback here and there isn't too bad.
I could see it hurting the style. What if there was just one full flashback episode?

They could do it as the premiere. Or the finale.

What if there was just one full flashback episode? "Stooping" might have been a little harsh, but I really like the fact that they haven't felt the need to do that and have kept the story moving forward. To me that feels like an inherent part of the show's style. Maybe a full prequel spinoff series or maybe a prequel mini-series between seasons might work.

I kind of like that there are no flashbacks. makes the history seem richer somehow? Its interesting how much we already know about that time without flashbacks.

Yea we don't need to see the rebellion in my opinion. Much more full and richer in your imagination.

There is no way Roberts Rebellion can be done until a Mini Series deal after they are done with the GOT main series. Roberts Rebellion could be a movie i guess but rather it be a mini series.

I recently ordered the first five books in the series, I'm hoping to get through at least the first two before the show starts up again in April.
Has anybody else read the books after watching the show? Did you still enjoy reading them? Different enough or interesting in other ways? I'm looking for some perspective.

No, I managed to finish the books just before the show started. Though I do so pretty late in the game. I would, however, be interested in hearing your thoughts.

If you are looking for more detail into the characters and the world, then you will not be disappointed.

Yeah that's a big part of it. I'm just hoping it enhances my view of the show rather than diminishing it lol.

It will diminish it. Very much so. Just too hard to squeeze all this information and character development into just 10 episodes. I really don't even like the show very much anymore, I think the acting is pretty hammy at times, the writing too glib and kind of self aware, but I will watch any interpretation of the books because it is an exciting universe.

While I'm still waiting for the books to arrive, I realized I actually already own a copy of 'A Game of Thrones'. I got about 25 pages in before dozing off last night (admittedly it was pretty late and I was already in bed). Pretty accurate adaptation so far... 25 pages into a 5000+ page series so far, so clearly I'm an expert.

I think the first season might be the most faithful.

I had read that before, and because of that I briefly debated skipping it and jumping right into 'A Clash of Kings.' I'm not really in any rush though.

It's actually playing near me surprisingly. I probably won't go though. Trying to cut back on unnecessary spending.
