Listening to the Red State portion right now which was the last Kevin Smith movie I watched in its entirety. He would often come on the radio when that came up on fire about Michael Parks not getting an Oscar nomination. It's weird because he would constantly complain about the Hollywood machine then bitch about how the Hollywood machine isn't giving him his due, all while slipping in Empire Strikes Back references. Because he's a big Star Wars fan, you see? So he brings it up a lot because he's such a big fan. Do you get it? DO YOU???

See, this is the shit he does all the time that really pisses me off. It's one thing to be a little self deprecating but he hides behind his 'inefficiencies' as a way to deflect criticism. Here's a guy who was handed the keys to the kingdom by Miramax and has spent the last 30 years making subpar movies with his friends and while he tried to branch out and launch some of his more unique ideas his movies have generally been rather infantile. There are people all over the world who have great ideas, great scripts, inspiration and messages they want to convey who will never, ever be able to make a movie either because of lack of resources, contacts, funding, the list goes on. Then here's Kevin Smith with questionable talents whose modus operandi has been to make bad movies, complain when people criticize his bad movies then continue making bad movies. He was an inspiration to indie filmmakers for a while, now he's an insult to them. Great, I hadn't thought of Kevin Smith in a long time and now I'm getting fired up again.

He's having so much fun getting baked that he directs with a similar "just vibin with my friends" energy, which basically enables his worst instincts. |

'Smith never considered himself a good filmmaker.' Kevin Smith was perfectly fine in the 90’s. I’d even go as far to say that Jersey Girl is alright. He just burned bridges after Red State/Cop Out and now is a podcaster that occasionally directs movies. If you want a general idea of what I'm mixed up in during my day to day (I'm not an artist). And yeah, things are not good at all in the industry on the whole, lots of people without work, moving, changing industries entirely. It's tough out there but I guess you could say that about any business these days.

Studios/filmmakers take advantage of that. FX artists get overworked and underpaid. Been happening for over a decade now. And it is unfortunate. Difference now is that work has dried up as studios cut back on spending. Very unfortunate. The glory days of ILM and Weta and Stan Winston and Rick Baker are long gone. Not sure even KNB would survive today. |

I also discovered Heavyweights on the Disney channel back in the 90s. Even as a kid it was obvious that it was trying to be something more than the standard Disney fare, it was a hidden gem for a long time.
