Coincidentally, just yesterday, I listened to the early 60's episode of Cinema in Seconds where you lamented The Manchurian Candidate getting left off AFI's updated Top 100 list. Speaking of Manchurian Candidate, I believe your first viewing of that was thanks to yours truly recommending it to you in the second round ever of the CS Film Club way back in 2006 and is one of only a handful of reviews from that thread that's been preserved:

90-minute breakdown of the infamous 1980 Oscars. Ronald Reagan was shot on the day of the ceremony (cause the shooter wanted to impress Jodie Foster) and Ordinary People controversially beat Raging Bull for Best Picture and Director. The video also goes over how critics hated 1980. Now classic movies like Empire Strikes Back and the Shining were not well received critically. And that overall sentiment trickled down into the type of movies that were nominated and eventually won at that year's Oscars.

Not as comprehensive, but 1972 was certainly an interesting year with Cabaret dominating the ceremony. Also, you know, Marlon Brando scandal.
