It's funny that it seems like they miss the date more than they actually announce on the 15th.

Are the paper flowers a hint? I miss the hints. Well, it's a frame from The Power of the Dog, so probably. The image from yesterday was Daisies.

Hmm, Internal Affairs intrigued me. Same with In The Mood.

You know, they already tricked me into buying the Wong Kar-Wai boxed set and now they want me to pay an extra $40 now that they finally figured out that 4Ks were worth selling. No thanks. Daisies is another movie they already stuffed in a boxed set once, though it's been longer so that feels less egregious. Malcolm X already has a pretty good blu-ray I have from Warner Brothers so I'm not too sure I'm going to be bothering with that. I guess I'll pick up Power of the Dog, but buying stuff that's free on Netflix is always a little bit of a weird dynamic. I'm not super into Infernal Affairs, but I guess it's a cool enough release even if we expect a bit more out of their November slate at this point. Also, for the love of Christ, why are they still doing blu-ray only releases like Infernal Affairs and Daisies without accompanying 4K releases? Especially when they advertise "New 4K digital restoration" right on the box. This fuckin' company is slipping.

Literally the only new bonus features on the Malcolm X release are "New conversation between Lee and journalist and screenwriter Barry Michael Cooper," "New interviews with actor Delroy Lindo and composer Terence Blanchard," and I guess the essay. Beyond that all it really offers that this Warner Brothers edition doesn't is the new transfer. Maybe that's enough for an upgrade to some people but this definately isn't a movie that needed Criterion's help getting a 4K version out, and on some level this is just paying for the Criterion logo. Frankly they would have been much better off putting that effort towards getting a physical release for Da Five Bloods.

I just looked it up on Amazon and the already-existing Blu Ray of Malcolm X is just $5.99. If there's really not going to be that much difference...hmmmmmmmmmm.........

Well, that's probably the one disc version rather than the two disc book version, which I think is out of print and expensive at this point. But, it probably still would have been in print otherwise so...

It's just missing the extra disc, which was a DVD primarily reserved for a documentary on the real Malcolm X. So...yeah.

The only available region 1 Blu-Ray on Amazon.ca is $96 so the Criterion is great news for my Canuck ass.

Update: the single disc 2017 edition of the Malcolm X Blu Ray arrived from Amazon today and apart from the feature-length documentary on the second disc of the DigiBook edition and the Criterion-specific features, the Special Features on this one look exactly the same. And it only cost me $5.99.

Malcolm X is be a Criterion that I would probably watch several times. In spite of the running time, Malcolm X is infinitely rewatchable. Don’t know if I can say the same about Best Picture winner Unforgiven.
