Honestly, I would have guessed that guy was dead. Looking him up now it appears that he's been getting work as a screenwriter, but he's done very little work as a director since Star Trek 6.

"It'll be more Star Trek than Next Generation." What does that mean...? Star Trek had plots filled with action which were resolved with either a fist fight, clever trickery or a bit of both, with some philosophy and idealism sprinkled in. Next Generation was full of philosophy and idealism driving a plot being resolved by transferring plasma from the warp core to the main deflector array to create an inverse tachyon beam in order to blah, blah, blah, blah...

Bryan Fuller is the showrunner. He's the guy who did Pushing Daises and Hannibal. So the show will be more... stylized. That fits perfectly with what the original Star Trek was. Next Generation had a more... basic aesthetic. Next Generation. Voyager. Deep Space Nine. Enterprise. All those shows more or less looked the same. Star Trek was more like Twilight Zone and those other "heightened" shows from the 60's.

So does the have Kirk and the crew from a different timeline? Or it's a new Enteprise with new crew members?

I'm kind of excited to see what Bryan Fuller does with this, I've always liked his stuff but he's never been allowed to be on the air as long as his series have deserved.

I'll bet $100 that the best actor will coincidentally turn out to be black. Coincidentally, mind you.

The notion of having the main character be an officer who isn't the Captain reminds me of the John Scalzi novel Redshirts. That story was told from the perspective on an officer, but not a bridge officer. I can't help but wonder if they might be taking some inspiration from the novel, if for no other reason than to try and kill the Redshirts TV series that's been in development hell for the past couple of years.

Wow. I completely forgot about that book. If that's the direction they take the show, it COULD be interesting.

It would be great though, if the writers on Star Trek: Discovery take some of that well earned criticism from Scalzi to heart.

Optimism in the franchise was nice for a while.

Articles tend to include details beyond their titles. It's crazy, I know.
Bryan Fuller has not left the show. Due to time constraints with other projects, he has stepped down as showrunner, handing over the reigns to Gretchen Berg and Aaron Harberts. So he's no longer heading up the series, but he will remain on as an executive producer and help with writing/refining stories.

Yeoh is best known for her role in Ang Lee’s “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.” I'll always remember Michelle Yeoh as the Chinese lady from Tomorrow Never Dies.

Doug Jones means extensive makeup for one character. I'm OK with this.
