I really liked it. This is supposed to be pre-kirk? At first I was thinking it was going to be 100 years post TNG, which would have been neat.

Orville is crap. This is Star Trek and besides all the CBS all access BS they are going to make tons of money from this. It has great characters and writing going for it. I can't believe were all saying this... But Star Trek is back where it belongs in Episodic form??

All Access was 6 bucks a month, which is cheap enough for me. I'll most likely cancel when they aren't posting new Trek episodes but they do have the full series of Perry Mason, which I've been itching to watch again. Other things that I'm interested in like other Trek shows, Cheers, and Fraiser are on Netflix so I can't get too excited about those, but they've got a pretty good setup. My big complaint about All Access so far is that their closed captioning doesn't quite work for us. My friends and I watched it in a house with a three-year-old and a two-year-old and we wanted to make sure we didn't miss the dialogue due to screaming children, but a lot of the captions that they put to the right side of the screen were cut off. Hopefully that gets fixed. The show was pretty good, though a few things I predicted would happen came to pass. I knew Michelle Yeoh's character was going to die just from the trailers shown, because of course Michael has to find a way to get under both Jason Isaac's command and the Discovery. What did take me by surprise: Michael committing mutiny and being imprisoned at the end of episode two, with a time jump into a war with the Klingons coming up in episode three. A very Battlestar Galactica move right there. The show feels a bit over-designed, especially on the Klingons. I observed they looked like Orcs from Lord of the Rings (with a "great white" one like in The Hobbit), while someone else took it a step further and said "they look like Orcs if they were in Stargate SG-1." But I get they're really trying to push Star Trek back into the spotlight, so I'm not too bothered by it. But overall, we all liked what we saw. It's too early to say where this series might rank for me in overall Trek, but I have that feeling of "oh where is this going to lead" that I mostly got from Deep Space Nine, so that's a good thing for me. But as I told someone yesterday "as long as it doesn't suck as hard as Voyager, I'm good."

The Orville has felt more like Star Trek than "STD". Neither have been particularly great, though. Orville has been a decent time waster. Discovery is more annoying.

I’m enjoying it so far. As long as I can take a knife to the part of the brain that remembers how Trek was.

Well after watching this first half of the season I'm on board enough to see where this goes. There's a lot of stuff I really like about it and there's a lot of stuff that kind of makes me cringe. We're clearly trying to delve into new territory here and I am kind of curious to see how it pans out. Bottom line is they are trying.
Things I like: Klingons within the context of their culture All of the main characters Bits of the more introspective part of character development The art Direction looks fantastic
Things I don't like: The Spore drive though I'm tolerating it for now The Klingon scenes not entirely fitting the room if that makes sense No stand alone episodes ( not looking to debate on this, I just don't like it)

I really hate this show. It had so much potential and I really enjoyed the first 2 episodes. But as the show progresses, the more I feel this has completely disrespected and disregarded the Star Trek canon.
Not one person in this show is interesting, anyone can die in a dumpster fire, and I wouldn’t care.
Say what you want About the JJ reboot movies. At least the characters and story keeps as much to Star Trek and doesn’t try to destroy the franchise history.
Total disappointment, the mirror universe made it pretty clear I’m done with this show.

If they hadn't wasted their time trying to squeeze it into the past as yet another prequel, I might have been more interested. You could have even had a story about how the Federation was starting to fall apart and races were starting to go to war. Whatever you want, but at least it could work. The technology wouldn't need explaining, the overall appearance of the universe, and you wouldn't have to continually worry about continuity.
Speaking of the mirror universe, RLM had a great idea that would have been amazing had they gone that route. Which was to essentially retcon it all by revealing that the entire show was taking place in the mirror universe, having key characters travel to "our" universe to see all the familiar ships and designs. Then of course having them stay there, because, you know... screw that universe they just came from.
