I would like too see old version on dvd as well but I am ok with them keeping the city inhancements in but throwing out the stupid beast looking parts and that dumb sarlacc beak inhancement. And please get rid of the Greedo shot first part.
One thing would like too see them finally fix the light saber colors again. I know they said they have but vaders still looks pink.

The Alamo Drafthouse down in Omaha is still stylized like the Death Star with the Emperor's chair and all. I'd much rather prefer to see the originals without all the "enhancements" that were added from the last time I saw it on the big screen. Otherwise it's a great theater to see these in. I've seen the pics of that theatre, and it looks amazing. The opening of the new Dallas location was really disappointing. They announced ahead of time that they would be going with an original Robocop theme, since that film was actually shot in Dallas rather than Detroit. When they opened, I expected to see some OCP branding at the ticket desk, a life-size statues of Murphy and ED-209. All we got was a movie poster on a wall in the lobby and some Robocop toys on the shelves behind the box office. Lame! Fortunately, the theatre itself is otherwise excellent. Maybe the next one in town will turn out better. It's going to be on John Carpenter Freeway, so they're probably going to go with a John Carpenter theme. As for seeing the Special Editions on the big screen, I'm not that interested.

The Alamo Drafthouse sponsored Special Edition Star Wars Trilogy marathon is showing in my area is tomorrow. Since it's the SE version, I didn't bother to buy tickets. Today, I got an email from Alamo informing me that I've been selected for a 50% discount on tickets for the marathon. I couldn't help but suspect that tickets weren't selling very well. My suspicions were confirmed when I clicked the link to buy tickets. Hardly any tickets have been sold, despite the announcement going out several months ago to thousand of loyal Alamo Drafthouse fans who love Star Wars. I hope this delivers a strong message to Lucasfilm as to what we really think about these bastardized versions of the holy trilogy.
Has anyone else heard anything about turnouts in other cities?

Interesting, sounds like Fox is doing this independently. Not clear if Lucasfilm is doing the same with Empire and Jedi, making a boxed set an open question. Also, kind of wish they'd hurry up and get The Force Awakens out on UHD... and maybe the prequels while they're at it.

If it's a proper release of the original film, then I'm in for a 4K purchase. If it's just another release of the Special Editions, then I don't give a pair of fetid dingo's kidneys about it.

Unless Fox has a copy of the original film in a vault somewhere, not sure how likely it is to get restored and released on 4k. HOWEVER, I am sure it is something Fox wants to do. If they can release the original film in theaters, it's guaranteed to gross $200-250 million. Then when it's released on blu-ray, it'll be a top seller. There's A LOT of money to be made from the original film and it's the only Star Wars money Fox can make at the moment except for TV rights to the special edition. The only other thing Fox can do is release a less annoying version of the special edition. They can do a 4k version of the 1997 one and delete unnecessary stuff like the Jabba scene and some of the establishing shots with all the CGI. They gotta meet fans halfway at least.

If fans can manage to piece together the Despecialized Edition of The Trilogy with nothing more than the resources available to the public, Fox should be able to figure out how to do the same thing for 4K.
As for meeting fans halfway by dialing back some of the CGI clutter, that might work. Having spaceships flying in and out of Mos Eisley Spaceport was an appropriate addition. Jabba was pointless and indulgent, since everything he tells Han was already delivered by Greedo in the previous scene. I'd be willing to at least give Fox a chance at something like that. If after seeing a pirate copy I find that it meets with my approval, I'd go ahead and buy it. As things currently stand, I've got a perfectly good copy of the Despecialized Edition and I don't own a 4K TV yet anyway.

There should be no reason that the original film can't be restored. Why does there need to be a compromise?

There should be no reason that the original film can't be restored. Why does there need to be a compromise? You need a well-preserved print, and as far as we know, no one outside of LucasFilm has it. I would like to think Fox has the negatives in a vault somewhere, but there's no evidence to back that up.

Both versions are pretty lame, but the original fits the tone of the movie.

The music is better, but doesn't fit the scene AT ALL. The reverse can be said about the ending. Frizzo the Clown can praise it all he wants but that Ewok song is fucking terrible and is an awful ending to the trilogy. The ONE change I approve of is this one.

Yeah, both endings are... a bit underwhelming. But hey, those are better than seeing Hayden Christensen at the end, what a load of shit that was.
