They're probably hoping that since it's a kids movie, it will perform better on home video than it did in theaters. That said, I wouldn't spend the extra money for a 4K copy for the kids, when I know full well that they'd be content with a bluray, or even a dvd.

I highly doubt a lot of the catalogue films in my collection will be relased, so I'm not jumping on this bandwagon just yet

Don't have the TV or player yet, but I'm probably going to go ahead and buy the UHD versions of new releases going forward anyway because they mostly come with the regular blu-ray as well and it will future proof them for later.

I think I read that UHD is better than 4K. But it could be a HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray scenario.

I bought a new UHD TV last year and yes the brightness and color depth is amazing in every level. It's looks great for action scenes and beautiful scenery, but if you are like Dracula you're not going to care for that crap and you should stick to the 1080P HDTV or regular big screen tvs.

Yeah, thats a good point. And they are still released in bluray cases, so it should blend in with collection.... Interesting. I guess I will see what the price diff is wehn i go pick up revenant this week.

So I am debating going 4K, but I dont want to split my movie collection in two parts. Can I justify mixing two formats?

4Ks look similar enough to blu-rays that I haven't found it too bothersome. But then again there is that mental note inside me that's POed that all my MCU discs aren't 4K.
Overall I like the format. It's definitely the most visually pleasing so far, though I imagine casual buffs will be content with blu. But upscaled are quite solid too.

HDR is hit or miss depending on the Movie, 4K on the other hand looks a lot better than 1080P so use some judgement when jumping on the new technology bandwagon.
Most people I know can't even tell the difference between 4K and 4k-HDR...

So I am debating going 4K, but I dont want to split my movie collection in two parts. Can I justify mixing two formats? Of course you can. Now granted I mix my DVDs with my blu-rays so my opinion on this might not be worth that much to you. For what it's worth 4K discs are the same approximate height as blu-rays, so they don't stick out as much in your collection. Also, every single UHD on the market that I'm aware of comes packaged with a blu-ray copy in the case (and usually all the bonus features will be on the blu-ray), so technically you could justify to yourself that these are still blu-rays you're putting in your collection that just so happen to come packaged with other discs that are much better.

Most people I know can't even tell the difference between 4K and 4k-HDR... You do sort of need to pay attention to reviews with 4K as some movies are shot or mastered in 2K which makes the additional picture quality on some more negligible than others.
