Avatar reached $2 Billion worldwide Take that! Would anyone still like to argue that Avatar had no cultural impact and no one cares about the franchise? I offer now as the time to do so. (please note this is not a dig on Way of Water haters, but culture writers who've spent almost a decade insisting the sequels will flop)

I made a bet with FShuttari seven years ago that this would never cross $1 billion. Glad he's not here to gloat!

Glad he's not here to gloat! There is a giant disconnect between internet dwellers and people in real life. Yes, Avatar (2009) is “dances with Smurfs” but most audiences didn’t care about that. They went for the superior 3D experience and are now doing the same with the sequel. Anyone in touch with reality knew this movie would be a success.

I knew Avatar was going to make bank because everyone I know over 50 fucking loves that movie and zoomers think everything evolves around their hyperbolic bitch grudges.
The Hunger Games can go suck an egg, but I'm not going to deny that it's popular. That would be stupid.

Glad he's not here to gloat! There is a giant disconnect between internet dwellers and people in real life. This year has made that increasingly clear. Avatar: Way of Water, Top Gun: Maverick, shit even House of the Dragon. I remember about a year ago seeing twitter threads about how Game of Thrones had basically destroyed itself and no one cared about that franchise anymore, no lasting cultural impact bla bla bla. Then House of the Dragon opens to record setting numbers for HBO.

I remember about two months before the new Stranger Things season I saw a Youtube video that asserted that no one cared about that show anymore because they waited too long to put out a season. Next thing you know it's setting records and is a big enough cultural force to get children to listen to Kate Bush.

Avatar 2 is number one for the seventh straight weekend, and probably its last. The question is will it get displaced by Knock at the Cabin, or by 80 for Brady, or both.
Avatar 1 was also number one for seven weeks before being displaced by Dear John. Titanic by contrast stayed number one for fifteen straight weeks before finally being displaced in April by Lost in Space.

Avatar 1 was also number one for seven weeks before being displaced by Dear John. Titanic by contrast stayed number one for fifteen straight weeks before finally being displaced in April by Lost in Space. If it weren’t for premium format surcharges, Puss n Boots would have knocked out Avatar by now. Sherlock Holmes, Avatar 1’s biggest competitor, only came close to #1 on Christmas weekend. Titanic and Tomorrow Never Dies came out the same weekend. They were only apart by $3 million. One could argue Tomorrow Never Dies should have done better since it has the shorter runtime and would have had more showtimes. But theaters could have compensated for that by playing Titanic is bigger auditoriums. That was the only weekend in which Tomorrow Never Dies was competitive with Titanic. Titanic did not have a real competitor till March 6 when U.S. Marshals (the sequel to the Fugitive) came out. They were only apart by $800,000. See, this is where you can put on your tinfoil hat. It’s very probable that U.S. Marshals did in fact out gross Titanic that weekend but Paramount cooked the books. That weekend, Paramount released a movie called Twilight, starring Paul Newman and Gene Hackman. If you’re a pervert like Doomsday , that’s the movie in which a 21-year-old Reese Witherspoon shows her tits. Twilight opened at #4 to mixed reviews and poor box office. Paramount could have allocated some of Twilight’s gross to keep Titanic at #1. The week after, a SnoBorderZero favorite, The Man in the Iron Mask came out. Also starring Leonardo DiCaprio, it was also close to knocking out Titanic. The two movies were only apart by $300,000. Three weeks later, Lost in Space finally knocks out Titanic from the #1 spot. Titanic remained in the Top 10 till June 18.

I went to a late showing of John Wick last night in downtown LA, they were playing Mario Bros. in the next theater. I was half tempted to try to squeeze that in but I didn't want to get out of the movies at 2AM.
