What do you like about it ? It's been a while, but I think it's a solid midlife crisis movie. And I think the jokes land more often than they don't. Plus I used to quote the construction guy in middle school. "Hey! You can't go there you stupid bitch!"

Are you stalking my computer?
The Criterion Channel was pushing this movie called The Big Knife with Jack Palance. It made me wonder just how many of his movies I've seen outside of Shane or Batman. I haven't seen City Slickers since I was probably 10 and remember nothing about it other than Palance won an Oscar for it but I looked around to see if it was available anywhere so I could watch it in the next day or two. That was last night.

I liked it a lot when I saw it as a kid, but I haven't rewatched it aside for those 2 or 3 times.

I watched the movie about five years ago and I think it's really weird that it seems a lot of us enjoyed this movie when we were kids. So much of that movie is about stuff adult men can primarily relate to. Maybe it was the cartoon at the beginning.
The second one, on the other hand, is a goofy cartoon. That one is probably more of a kids movie.

Haven't seen it since I was eight or something. Don't think it did much for me then and I doubt I'll ever see it again.

That one is probably more of a kids movie. There’s enough physical humor and action scenes to keep children entertained. I don’t think the movie is particularly funny or insightful but I was caught off-guard by how ambitious it is. They put real effort into the production value.

Kids come for the pratfalls but stay for the long pondering conversations of sexual non-gratification.
Which was the one where Daniel Stern thought he got bit on the ass by a snake, tried to get Billy Crystal to suck the poison out, only to find out he sat on a cactus? Was that the first or the second? I loved that scene when I was a kid.

Also, how dare you say it's not insightful. Clearly the moral of the story is don't walk where you're not supposed to walk because there might not be someone with superhuman strength to save your little ass.
And don't do drugs.

I saw City Slickers for the first time this year. From letterboxd:
Patrick H. Willems recently put out a video defending "pretty good" movies, those which aren't really exceptional in their ambitions or execution, but are generally entertaining and pass the time well enough. That's basically the perfect summation of City Slickers. This 1991 comedy is a pretty breezy story of men in mid-life crisis who rediscover themselves in a fairly low-stakes way. The filmmaking is relatively unexceptional, but Billy Crystal is cast perfectly as a sarcastic and slightly insecure man and most of the jokes land. What surprised me though is how the film was almost touching at points. The camraderie between Crystal, Bruno Kirby, and Daniel Stern is pretty genuine and scenes where the three merely talk about their feelings effected me more than I thought they would. Overall, City Slickers isn't really anything special, but it's a fun movie I really enjoyed my time with.

It was between him, Tommy Lee Jones as the bad guy from JFK, both Harvey Keitel and Ben Kingsley from Bugsy, and Michael Lerner from Barton Fink of all things. Not sure any of those winning would have exactly felt "right."

I don't know who Palance was up against, so weak competition might have been a factor.
He's good in the movie, but he mostly is just intimidating guy they share stories about for half the movie, then he has one bonding scene with Billy Crystal ("One thing"), then he dies. He's really just Jack Palance playing Jack Palance in a cowboy hat.

Looking at what I've seen from 1991, I think my big contenders would be John Goodman for Barton Fink, Laurence Fishburne for Boyz N the Hood, Ted Levine in The Silence of the Lambs, and maybe even Dustin Hoffman in Hook.
