Casino Royale dropped the formula completely. It didn't. We still got a great pre-title sequence. We still got the traditional opening credits. We still got spectacular action scenes. We still got James Bond banging a couple of women. It still gave us signature Bond stuff while trying new things.

I don't think a stunt category should be added because I frankly don't think Academy members are really in much of a position to judge that. Are they just supposed to vote for the most dangerous stunt? The most graceful? The best choreographed fight? It's just going to be a mess, you can't really vote on something like that simply by looking at the movie, you need behind the scenes knowlege to really pick it and I think that would just be a mess.

Meh, messy category or not, it is a group of hard working people being neglected. I say they should add it.

Tom Cruise would just keep making Mission Impossible movies though, he would get an Oscar every year for the shit he does in those.

I don't think Academy members are really in much of a position to judge that. What are you talking about? These are industry professionals. They're more qualified than us. Tom Cruise would just keep making Mission Impossible movies though, he would get an Oscar every year for the shit he does in those. Maybe if there was an award show just for stunts. I think a stunt category at the Oscars would go to the stunt coordinator.

I have a proposed poll, but it's not the least bit hip or modern.
Lawrence of Arabia; does it qualify as a war film?

Tough call, but I'm going with The Revenant. I like the trailer a lot more and Inarritu's coming off greatness.

Love me some Tarantino, and The Hateful Eight looks awesome...but I'm going with The Revenant by a hair, which looks to be another interesting "experiment" by Innaritu.

Uhh, guys, Tarantino clearly has a much better track record... Does he? Pulp Fiction is a stone cold classic, Reservoir Dogs is a cultural touchstone, Jackie Brown is a gem, Inglorious Basterds and Django Unchained are in the top tier of recent movies, and the Kill Bill movies are exceptionally entertaining. On the other side you've got Amores Perros, which is certainly really good, but not pantheon quality (it also plainly owes a debt to Tarantino). Then you've got 21 Grams, an interesting if frustrating effort. Babel, which I like better than some people but which is generally seen as a pretty banal effort. Biutiful, which certainly has some good qualities but remains a rather overblown bit of miserablism. And then you have Birdman, which is certainly a big comeback but we're not exactly sure where that will lead to.

On the other hand... Tarantino hasn't really evolved in 23 years. He's gotten MUCH better as a technical filmmaker and his 70mm effort will be noteworthy, but he's still a dude making "homages" to the shit he liked as a kid. The Hateful Eight is literally based on an episode of Gunsmoke. Inarritu is at least challenging himself and the art form. I have very little doubt that The Revenant will be better than The Hateful Eight.

If I were just comparing the directors, than it's pretty even for me (maybe a slight edge to Tarantino), but I have a few reasons for wanting to see The Revenant more. First off, I absolutely love the trailer. Second, it looks like a more ambitious choice for Inarritu than The Hateful Eight does for Tarantino. Third, Inarritu is coming off one of his best films, while Tarantino is coming off one of his weaker efforts (even if it's still a very good movie).
I don't want to come down harshly on either filmmaker though. I have great respect for both of them and to be honest I can't wait for both.

Inarritu is coming off one of his best films, while Tarantino is coming off one of his weaker efforts (even if it's still a very good movie). Yup. One filmmaker is at the peak of his career and the other is in the decline.

Tarantino of course has the better resume. I'll watch anything he makes, he's yet to make anything less than a good film and is one of the few filmmakers today that truly has a definitive style. It doesn't bug me if he's paying homage to films because he's still very much making them his own and taking them in different directions, which is always a thrill to watch.
I think in this case I'm curious to see where The Revenant goes, where is Innaritu going after Birdman? I agree with Dracula's assessments of the man's films (I just recently finished up the last couple I hadn't seen) and it's amazing how different Birdman is from his other entries. His previous films were all very serious, hardly any humor at all, and often dreary to the point of almost exhaustion. But they're all shot beautifully, have unique film scores (he used to be a DJ in Mexico City), and even if the characters are often drowning in their own misery they're fascinating to watch. Birdman is full of such vibrancy and energy that isn't there in the prior works, even in Amores Perros which is his next best. The Revenant seems to be more of Innaritu going back to the tone of his prior films, but there's an epic scale to it all that is astounding. I cannot wait to see the film, I'm hoping it makes Birdman look like Biutiful, I want it to be that good.
I'm gonna be there opening night for both films and I'm likely going to love both of them as well.

I'm going to go with Jumanji. Movies with The Rock that failed to include the words Fast or Furious in the title were not performing very well, despite how much everyone seems to like the guy. Jack Black had starred in one disappointment after the next. Kevin Hart movies mainly do well strictly because they cost so little to make in the first place, since they don't make much money really. Only Doctor Who fans knew who Karen Gillan is when she's not a blue cyborg. It was a fun kids movie that deserved to bring in a good return at the box office. It didn't really warrant the kind of money it ultimately made, but sometimes the timing just works out perfectly. While Star Wars did a great box office as well in December of 2017, nobody really wanted to watch it again. Add to that the usual collection of trash that comes out in January and February, and Jumanji gained the legs to bring in more than it's expected share of the box office. If I were to go with Other, I'd have picked Suicide Squad, since it succeeded almost entirely because of timing. It was also far less deserving of it's success. At least Jumanji was a fun ride. Suicide Squad was a piece of shit.

Out of those three, probably Bohemian Rhapsody. Aladdin had the Disney machine behind it and was coming of the even more surprising success of Beauty and the Beast, and Jumanji clearly had a very audience pleasing trailer behind it. Bohemian Rhapsody though, I wasn't surprised that it was a success on some level but I certainly didn't expect it to make 900 million worldwide. Outside of those I'd say I'm pretty surprised that Glass and by extension Split made as much as they did given that neither are all that good and neither really have what would normally be considered commercial these days.
