Which movie had the better trailer, Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation or Spectre?

They have very different tones so it's hard to say.

Spectre is more of a genuine teaser, where as MI5 pretty much lets you know everything to expect. Pretty hard to compare, but I'll got with Spectre on this one.

Not sure which one pisses me off more. Spectre just seems to show that the Bond series is going to continue to fuck with the traditional formula that I come to Bond movies for and that they're going to try again at introducing uneeded continuity into this series. The Mission: Impossible series on the other hand is the one that's supposed to try new things and introduce wild stylistic shifts but instead they're stuck in the this Abrams shaped rut that they've been in since MI:3.

Mission: Impossible 3 and Ghost Protocol are very different movies. But I agree that Rogue Nation does seem to follow in the footsteps of Ghost Protocol. Although interviews with the director seem to contradict that.

M:I, like the Fast & Furious franchise, has perfected its production. It knows exactly what to do and how to do it and Cruise is in his element.
Bond doesn't excite me at all. I saw Skyfall out of necessity and was disappointed by the blatant TDK influences.
Mendes is better than a Nolan-rip off merchant but I imagine the powers that be let him know exactly how they wanted it to look. Maybe this one will have more of his creative input. I'll wait for the reviews.

Isn't Skyfall the most successful movie in British history? Not adjusted for inflation.

Yep. I started working in the UK's largest cinema chain's main call centre two weeks before it was released. Talk about being dropped in at the deep end. 12 hour days and the phone never stopped ringing.
I guess it's better than the previous #1: Mamma Mia.
FFS.
We have terrible taste. Though I will say that I went to see Interstellar at the BFI IMAX a month ago and it was still selling out every daily show. London Brits know what's up.

I'll give Skyfall a pass because ripping off TDK is completely understandable - though I maintain that Mendes is better than that.
Mamma Mia at #1 though? I am better than all the people that made that happen. Every last one. Way better! How did we let this happen? Do we love Abba that much? 30 years after they split up?
Brainwashing is the only explanation.

My only question to this is, would you rather go back to the days of The World Is Not Enough and Die Another Day? Yes. They make hundreds of movies every year and I want 99% of them to take chances and strive for greatness but leave the Bond franchise alone. To me Bond movies are more of a tradition than they are a movie series, making the same movie over and over again for decades on end was the whole point, to do otherwise is to do it wrong. It doesn't matter how "good" Skyfall or whatever is, if it's not a real Bond movie it's not a real Bond movie. (And no, even when removed from my fanboy baggage I don't think it's as good as people make it out to be) That said, there is a middle ground they could have gone to where they simply execute well while still maintaining the traditions the series was founded on. Think Goldeneye. Instead they wildly over-reacted to one movie that didn't turn out well and started turning over tables and threw out the baby with the bathwater.

I see it as less an overreaction to one movie that turned out crummy. It's more of the Bond producers' obvious and desperate attempts to imitate a certain American spy franchise (I won't say which but let's just call it Jason Bourne) that blew the Bond franchise out of the water. You have to thank Bourne though, without it we wouldn't have got Casino Royale. Instead we would have been given some other shitty Brosnan movie that we would all be cringing at today.

Die Another Day came out the year after The Bourne Identity and made more than twice as much money at the box office.

The Daniel Craig movies are based on the Timothy Dalton movies. 2. Clear and Present Danger (1994) 3. A little TV show called 24. 4. The Ian Fleming novels. 5. I would take the best James Bond movies, old and new, over ANY Jason Bourne movie. Why are you combining these two movies? Because they're the last two Bond films before Casino Royale. Also, they both suck. The World Is Not Enough is a good movie. It's arguably better than Quantum of Solace.

But Bourne Supremacy came out between Die Another Day and Casino Royale and frankly it's impossible to deny the influence that the Bourne franchise had on the subsequent Bond movies.

It had influence. No one is denying that. But you're also making the assumption that The Bourne franchise is "original." Not even the shaky cam is unique to Bourne. The Daniel Craig movies are influenced by a lot more than just Jason Bourne.

It's not original, however Casino Royale is a response to Bourne, not Clear and Present Danger or 24.

Casino Royale is a response to Bourne. Die Another Day is a response to Mission: Impossible 2. Licence to Kill is a response to Lethal Weapon & Die Hard. Moonraker is a response to Star Wars. Live & Let Die is a response to blaxploitation. This is a 53 year old franchise. Shit happens. But James Bond has always been uniquely James Bond, regardless of you and Dracula think.

The thing is though is that those other movies still followed that formula that Dracula mentioned. The gun barrel sequence, the role of the Bond women, mandatory Q (for the most part), it's all there. It was Casino Royale that dropped the formula completely. I know Bond purists would like to go back to that standard formula but I think that would be tough to keep this edgier, darker Bond while pushing any continuity to the side. Heck, the continuity has been one of my favorite parts of the new films, it makes Bond more relatable.
