I've gotta hand it to Kevin Smith though, for as narcissistic as he is he knows exactly what kind of filmmaker he is and what kind of movies he's supposed to make. He makes movies for his View Askew fans and no one else. They're the only ones who would be interested in Moose Jaws and Mallrats 2 and he gives them exactly what they're looking for. There was a time when Smith would complain when a movie got trashed by critics or even passed over for awards consideration but from the looks of it he looks to have embraced his role as the current king of crap movies.
If you read any movie website they're constantly talking about any thought that so much as crosses Quentin Tarantino's mind. The latest I've seen is 'Tarantino talks about the history of the Gimp' and of course 'Is Quentin making Star Trek?' and 'Tarantino once had an idea for a James Bond movie.' Basically a whole lot of nonsense but these people need something to write. For whatever reason though they constantly write about Kevin Smith with the same amount of enthusiasm and vigor. I wish I could go onto /film or film drunk for one day without seeing some new dumb item about that idiot.

It truly is amazing how much worse he gets with each film. Like the few skills he once had have completely diminished and have just become uglier and uglier in the process. And look how cheap the whole thing looks. Just awful.

Deakins shoots on digital when he isn't being forced to use film (he has said many times he enjoys the digital workflow more and the quality of the image gives a different but just as pleasing look as film does). Smith is a hack filmmaker who doesn't have any technique and is just making whatever garbage idea pops into his head next. There's a reason that he hasn't been relevant, as a filmmaker, in almost two decades now. He had a short run where people liked his shtick in the '90s, it petered out fast in the 2000s and he's just been debasing himself more and more ever since. |

He can use an ALEXA all he wants and the movie still wouldn't look good. He's not a visionary, never has been. He was amusing because of his writing and some fun work by his actors in the '90s. The problem isn't the visuals anyways. Well, they're a part of it, but the real problem is look at this shit he's putting out. Bro, this is some direct-to-video horror sequel level shit. The Megan Fox lion movie looks better than this, and that movie is destined to be abhorrently shitty. Kevin Smith deserves no excuses. He's making less interesting fare than M. Night at this point.
