One of the reasons I love Tarantino's work too. Tarantino makes it work because he doesn't use the same actors in every movie. When you have Jason Lee playing Brodie, Banky and Azrael, it breaks the fourth wall and it's difficult to immerse in the story. Kevin Smith movies have never felt like real movies. They feel like some guy in Jersey borrowed a camera and made movies on the weekend with his friends. I guess there's some charm to that, but after 20 years, it just seems like his filmmaking should have progressed by now.

Not excited, I wrote Kevin Smith off years ago. I mean, Clerks III? Yeah, the guy is reachingggg. Out of all of the directors involved in a trilogy, why is he the one "reaching". I meant more that he's out of ideas and keeps going back to the only well he's got, reaching is probably the wrong word. But "Clerks II" wasn't nearly as good as the original and didn't expand on anything or really have much point of existing other than some decent laughs and for Smith to milk his best work. I mean look at something like Linklater's Before Trilogy. Each film greatly expands on the relationship and tackles three different issues while staying true in its formula. What does Clerks III possibly have to offer? I'd be interested in Smith had any ability to expand on ideas, but he's just not a very good filmmaker. And I enjoyed "Clerks II", I'm not saying it wasn't good, but I don't see how a third film could be anything but mediocre at best especially given his recent track record.

With the exception of Cop Out, I have enjoyed everything he has done. I seem to be one of the few who even enjoyed Jersey Girl. My only beef with Red State was the ending. I wish they had the budget for the real ending he wanted and not the one filmed.
I have not seen Tusk yet so no opinion on it.
Clerks 2 is one of my favorite movies. While I have never been a Clerk, the story is really relate-able to me. Being stuck in a place, just moping by, nervous to make any real change and go for a dream. It just hit home for me.
As I mentioned, I enjoy just about everything he does so I am sure I will be digging these new releases as they come.

Look at something like Linklater's Before Trilogy. Clerks is WAY better than Before Sunrise. They're not even in the same league. Before Sunrise is the most overrated Indie from the 90's. It's slightly less boring than watching paint dry. But I agree that Before Sunset is better than Clerks II. Like you said, it progresses the story, it has a short running time and it's very well-paced. Clerks II suffered because Kevin Smith wasted time on jokes he already told us in his Q&A specials. And also, like you said, there wasn't any evolution. It was just de-evolution. Fun movie? Definitely. But it's ultimately nothing special. I seem to be one of the few who even enjoyed Jersey Girl. I like Jersey Girl. It was a nice change of pace for him.

And you already nailed what I was getting at, where Linklater has continually progressed on his ideas and style and Smith has done anything but. Smith says that "Slacker" was a major influence on him and "Clerks", but their careers since have gone on opposite spectrums. I don't think even Smith likes "Jersey Girl", and sadly that's not even his worst film.

I have a new respect for Kevin Smith. I don't always like what he makes, but based on twitter interactions from today he's a responds to criticism with 100% class. Link?

I don't know how to link it, but I said his perpetual man-child act was annoying and to grow up and shut up. In response he linked to one of my tweets in which I talk about my knitting and said "I need grown up clothes. Can you knit me an XXXL?" I got a couple snarky responses from his fans, but overall it was pretty tame and I felt twitter-famous for a day.
My tweet isn't even showing up on my timeline. The inital tweet that got me all the attention was a response to something Drac said. I don't know how twitter works.

Awesome he replied. I should send him a tweet or two and see if I get a response. Only celebs I have been able to talk to (online) were Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, and Edgar Wright when they did a QA session on another movie forum back when Hot Fuzz was coming out.

I like him as a personality moreso than a filmmaker. That's what they say about Jibbs . Speaking of, where has he been lately?

The Mallrats sequel is called MallBRATS. How clever. I bet his daughter and her friends will be the stars.

Well that is awful. As long as someone farts while getting blown though... it could still work.

Title doesn't bother me that much.
Finally watched Tusk, not his best work but better than Cop Out.

I know that the Canadian-ness is intentionally over the top, the way Bob & Doug McKenzie were, but that was still a bit much. There is a delicate balance when doing a quality parody. Bob & Doug had it. This doesn't. The fact that somebody felt this was a good enough representation of the film to use as an introduction causes me great concern. On the plus side, Harley & Lily Rose have a natural chemistry together. I suppose that's not surprising since they're best friends IRL.

I remember 8 years ago I watched Kevin Smith on Jay Leno to promote Zack & Miri and he casually mentioned that his daughter and Johnny Depp's daughter were friends, and I'm like, "how the fuck did that happen?" I thought Depp and his family lived in France. I'm sure Kevin Smith explains it in one of his million podcasts.

Not by choice! He just shows up to Kevin and Bean all the time with his hacking couch and shoehorns Empire Strikes Back into every conversation. Ralph Garman falls over himself trying to butter him up so Smith will keep casting him in his shit movies.
