Release Date: November 25, 2015 Studio: 20th Century Fox Director: Ridley Scott Screenwriter: Not Available Starring: Matt Damon, Kate Mara, Michael Pena, Jessica Chastain Genre: Sci-Fi Plot Summary: "The Martian" is based on Andy Weir's 2012 e-book publication, which issued a print edition this past February. It is officially described as follows: Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain-old "human error" are much more likely to kill him first. But Mark isn't ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills—and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit—he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him? www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=123640

I've read the book, and it's fantastic. I'll definitely be going to see this one. Aside from one bit at the very beginning with the big wind storm that gets the story rolling, the science is spot on for reality.

It's very good, but not brilliant. It's heavy on science and humor and it'll be interesting to see if either of those things will be heavy in the movie. Based on the trailer, I'd say we're going to get a heavy dose of both. Actually, based on one LINE, I'd say we'll get both: "I'm going to have to science the shit out of it. Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is a real smart ass in the book. Just when the book started to get a little dry, a new layer would be added to the narrative. But judging from the trailer, the three settings will probably be spread out evenly: Mars, Earth, spaceship.

Jibbs thebtskinkThe Martian was originally gonna be released in November but Fox just moved it to October. I guess they're following in the footsteps of Gravity and not Interstellar.

Whats with the ominous bad guy though? Does he try to shut down the mission to go save the guy if they can? What does he have to lose if they go back and find him alive?

You mean Jeff Daniels? He's probably just an obstacle and not an actual villain.

Jeff is definitely not the villain. The only villain in The Martian is Mars. Like any large organization, NASA is made up of people who disagree on what the best way to do something might be. Sometimes the culmination of these debates is a huge success, like the Apollo 11 moon landing or the Pathfinder Martian rover. At other times you get the destruction of Challenger due to a known problem with the O-ring and the complete failure of numerous Martian probes. In the case of Daniels' character, he appears to be the public relations person for NASA. It's his job to to notify the press of what's going on. When the subject at hand is the fate of a man stranded 140 million miles away, the news is rarely positive. It will mainly consist of the countless different circumstances that could kill him sooner or later.

Coincidentally, I watched the movie Red Planet (which happened to be the next movie in my Netflix DVD Queue) last night, which had a similar premise as this. But the trailer for The Martian alone was a million times better than Red Planet.

"Stuck in space and needing to be rescued." I feel like I've seen this movie a few times already, now.
I'm completely disinterested in this.
