So is "stuck in space and needing to be rescued" the new big plot in Hollywood? And to think that Gravity lost Best Picture to the movie where Brad Pitt plays white Jesus.

"Stuck in space and needing to be rescued." I feel like I've seen this movie a few times already, now. I'm completely disinterested in this. Having read the novel, if I were to liken The Martian to any movie that's come before, it wouldn't be a sci-fi movie at all. It would be Castaway, except instead of being marooned on a lush tropical island with lots of food and water, a mild climate and a reasonable chance of making his way back home on a craft of his own devising, our protagonist is stranded in an endless desert with hardly any food or water, a violently deadly climate which is unforgiving of any mistake at the best of times and zero chance of escape of his own accord.

Hopefully this is a step in the right direction for Ridley Scott and not another Exodus. Or Robin Hood. Or Counselor. Or Prometheus.

I actually enjoyed Prometheus, even with it's faults.

I actually enjoyed Prometheus, even with it's faults. You must have a microscope to see its miniscule faults.

For every 10 movies, Ridley Scott makes 1 that's good. So say we all...

That's a bit harsh.
1 in 3.

That's a bit harsh. 1 in 3. 2015 The Martian 2014 Exodus: Gods and Kings 2013 The Counselor 2013 The Vatican (TV Movie) 2012/I Prometheus 2010 Robin Hood 2008 Body of Lies 2007 American Gangster
2006 A Good Year 2005 All the Invisible Children (segment "Jonathan") 2005 Kingdom of Heaven
2003 Matchstick Men 2001 Black Hawk Down 2001 Hannibal 2000 Gladiator 1997 G.I. Jane ---------------------------------------------------- highlighted movies i'd give 10/10, so maybe 1 in 5?

Well that's 4 out of 16 so it's literally 1 in 4.

Well that's 4 out of 16 so it's literally 1 in 4. I was accounting for the big drop between Martian and American Gangster...

I wonder at what point during production of The Counselor did Scott and others say to themselves 'oh shit.'

2015 The Martian
2014 Exodus: Gods and Kings - crap
2013 The Counselor - mega crap
2012/I Prometheus - whatever
2010 Robin Hood - why was this made?
2008 Body of Lies - completely forgettable
2007 American Gangster - have you seen any other gangster movie ever? Then no need to see this.
2006 A Good Year - actually not bad at all, quite underrated and certainly better than anything he's made since.
2005 Kingdom of Heaven - you all know how I feel
2003 Matchstick Men - a fun little movie
2001 Black Hawk Down - really good
2001 Hannibal - not bad but went in the wrong direction
2000 Gladiator - it's Gladiator

I finished reading the novel on Friday, and I gotta say, it's made me that much more excited for the film. I mean, the material's there, all Scott has to do is direct it well.

Did people here like Prometheus? Or did they find it overlong and unnecessary like me?

I loved Prometheus. I find it pretty underappreciated.
