Winter Sleep Directed by: Nuri Bilge Ceylan Written by: Ebru Ceylan Starring: Haluk Bilginer, Demet Akbag, Melisa Sözen, Tamer Levent, and Nejat Isler Distributer: Sony Pictures Classics Country: Turkey Language: Turkish Rating: Not Rated Running Time: 196 Minutes Aspect Ratio: 2.35:1 Date released: 12/19/2014 Date seen: 1/16/2015 Worldwide Box Office Gross: $3.7 Million # of Oscar nominations: 0 # of Golden Stake Nominations: 3 (Original Screenplay, Supporting Actress, Cinematography) # of Golden Stakes Won: 1 (Original Screenplay) I guess I understand why this movie didn’t exactly “break out.” It’s 196 minutes long, it’s in Turkish, its heavily dialogue driven, but damn if I don’t think it’s a fine piece of work. Telling the story of a wealthy man who views himself as a respected renaissance man but who comes to realize that he is actually resented by pretty much everyone around him. The film plays out like a brilliant piece of theater but set against a brilliantly atmospheric Anatolian backdrop, the film is probably Turkish director Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s most accessible movie in spite of its lengthy runtime. It’s a film with a very astute understanding of human nature and the various ways that people lie to themselves and to each other and it’s brilliantly acted by the various principal character. Full Review And that should make my number one pretty obvious for anyone who's been paying attention, but I'll wait another hour anyway.

Boyhood Directed by: Richard Linklater Written by: Richard Linklater Starring: Ellar Coltrane, Patricia Arquette, Lorelei Linklater, and Ethan Hawke Distributer: IFC Films Country: USA Language: English Rating: R Running Time: 165 Minutes Aspect Ratio: 1.85:1 Date released: 7/11/2014 Date seen: 7/19/2014 Worldwide Box Office Gross: $44.3 Million # of Oscar nominations: 6 (Picture, Director, Original Screenplay, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Editing) # of Golden Stake Nominations: 6 (Source Music, Editing, Soundtrack, Supporting Actress, Supporting Actor, and Original Screenplay) # of Golden Stakes Won: 4 (Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Editing, Soundtrack) Yeah, I know, not a big surprise. When I first saw Boyhood I knew I’d seen an amazing movie but I did think there was room for something else to usurp it at the top spot. That never really happened though and frankly I feel like the movie has only really gone up in my estimation since then. You come to the movie to witness the impressive audacity of someone making a movie over the course of twelve years but you stay for the movie’s incredible ability to pick out the little moments in life that don’t seem momentous but which still stick with you for some unexplainable reason. The whole film is remarkable for its ability to pick a very specific and unique rhythm and stick to it in spite of an endless number of incorrect avenues that the film could have gone down. It’s a remarkable miracle of a movie. Full Review

It’s a remarkable miracle of a movie. It's a shame that American Sniper is gonna win Best Picture.

Great stuff, Dracula. I'll have to watch some of these.
Wish I felt the same way about Boyhood that others do. And I'm such a big Linklater fan.

Here's a fun fact: I originally had Boyhood as my #1 film of the year, but ultimately decided to switch it with Birdman upon further reflection on the latter.

Ok so you got me watching The Babadook and so far (12 minutes in) i want to shove a sock in that little fucker's mouth and duct tape him to the ceiling. Part of his monster problem is that his mom reads him those creepy stories lol
(after 22 minutes) better yet, sell him off for scientific experiments

Yeah it was one of the better horror movies I have seen in quite some time, lots of creepy atmosphere, and really nice light and shadow work. Not thrilled with the ending, but it was interesting

Maybe Justin will finally watch Boyhood now...
Nice list, by the way. Your love of the unorthodox and non-commercial is admirable.
