Jillian Kesner being the "grand prize winner at the Black Belt Olympics" would be more impressive if there was any such thing as the Black Belt Olympics. I haven't seen Firecracker, but I have seen another movie she was in called Raw Force that is awesome.

SnoBorderZero BURNT OFFERINGS (1976) Famed alcoholic Oliver Reed stars as a husband and father who moves his family into a possessed house. It kinda predates the Amityville Horror. They're different movies but also shockingly similar. It's alright. Worth checking out for Oliver Reed, Betty Davis and Burgess Meredith.

THE IPCRESS FILE (1965)Say “My Cocaine” one more time. Produced by Harry Saltzman. Set Design by Ken Adams. Edited by Peter Hunt. Music by John Barry. All four from the James Bond series, but make no mistake, this ain’t James Bond. Harry Palmer, oozing with charm and low-key badassery in a breakout performance by Michael Caine, is the central figure here. He’s a surveillance officer tasked with aiding in the search of a missing scientist. The investigation uncovers a psychedelic scheme involving brainwashing that’ll remind you this is a movie from 1965. Unlike James Bond which relies on exotic locations and spectacle, Harry Palmer’s universe is set in apartments, offices, grocery stores, warehouses and the streets of London. It’s a bureaucratic take on the spy genre. In lesser hands this could have been a snore but the cinematography, editing, music and performances are amusingly very 1960’s and very British. It’s very fun to watch if you dig those things. For fans of 007, it’ll be interesting to watch members of the creative team tinker with the genre they helped make famous. It’s an oddity of the era well worth your time — if you can find it. Unfortunately, the movie isn’t as widely available as it should be. Shame.

FUNERAL IN BERLIN (1966)Dracula is under the belief that directors don’t matter in the James Bond franchise. Although there’s obvious differences in the entries by Terence Young, Lewis Gilbert, John Glen, Martin Campbell and Sam Mendes. We see more evidence of that in the Harry Palmer series. Ipcress File was directed by Canadian filmmaker Sidney J. Furie, who SnoBorderZero will remember from Superman IV: The Quest for Peace. Furie turned Ipcress File into a 60’s psychedelic spy thriller and was rewarded handsomely for it. Ipcress File was nominated for Cannes’ Palme d’Or and won Best Film at the British Academy Awards. For the sequel, Harry Saltzman brought in James Bond alum Guy Hamilton (Goldfinger, Live & Let Die) and the results are night and day. Funeral in Berlin finds Harry Palmer (Michael Caine) helping an East Berlin Colonel defect to West Berlin. Sounds simple enough for an agent of her Majesty’s Secret Service but Palmer is plagued by various twists and turns and only survives on his wits. The movie is very straightforward and relies heavily on the relationship between the characters since the story is mostly predictable and not overly exciting. It’s not a bad film. It’s quite good actually. Hamilton is very good with pacing and humor, and the cast is excellent, which includes Slugworth from Willy Wonka. Hilarious! But it’s a major step down from Ipcress File.

I didn't know he was a real person. I figured Sidney J. Furie was a fake name that a committee of execs used while "directing" Superman IV: The Quest for Peace. That was the only explanation for that movie being what it was.

I think there were quite a few reasons Superman IV wound up the way it was. Probably the primary reason was simply just that it was a Cannon production, which means it was always very likely the movie was going to be a cheap sack of crap.
Then I think there was an almost-embezzling-but-not-quite scheme where the studio set a certain budget for the movie but kept funneling money out of it to fund other projects, I think. I always thought the director was just along for the ride.
The guy also directed Cannon's Top Gun knock-off Iron Eagle. My sister used to love that movie, though I remember nothing about it. That might be a better judgement of his 80's career than Superman.

I always thought the director was just along for the ride. Cannon was pulling all kinds of financial shenanigans. They'd go to international film festivals and sell the distribution rights to movies they hadn't actually filmed yet, and then use the distributors money to actually make the movie. They'd also convince investors to finance movie A, then use that money to produce movie B which they couldn't find investors for. Their plan in these cases was to use the profits from movie B to produce movie A. When movie B failed to make a profit, the house of cards that was Cannon fell apart.

BILLION DOLLAR BRAIN (1967)The third and final Harry Palmer is quite the mess. Ken Russell was brought in to direct, and although he brought visual flair and spectacle to the trilogy, he also didn’t seem to care for story or continuity. James Bond inspired many imitators. Some were okay. Some were forgettable. But the Palmer films stood out as doing their own thing. Here that is tossed out in favor of over-the-top villains, action scenes and nonsensical plotlines. Would be fine if Russell had done something noteworthy with it, but it just comes across as any run-of-the-mill James Bond wannabe of the 60s. Disappointing end for Palmer. They could have made more of these. The Tom Cruise Mission: Impossibles for early Bond. Michael Caine would have enjoyed the paychecks. Oh well.

Ken Russell, the guy that made The Devils? Wow I would not have thought he'd direct a mainstream spy thriller like this, seems like a very odd choice.

Deranged (1974)This is a Canadian horror film based on Ed Gein (whom Psycho was also based on). So the premise is the same. Weird loner keeps his mom's corpse in the house and goes off to kill women. Deranged is sort-of a predecessor to Town That Dreaded Sundown. It doesn't fully commit to the "documentary" concept but it's there. It's also kinda similar to Texas Chainsaw Massacre which is interesting cause both were released the same year. It's a nitty gritty sorta-gory/sorta-slasher film. It's a little bit of a dark comedy. It's fully weird. You could tell they were experimenting with different ideas. It's fun.

31 DAYS OF HALLOWEEN!DAY TWO: EYES OF LAURA MARS (1978)Faye Dunaway and a "young" Tommy Lee Jones in Eyes of Laura Mars (1978)Pop quiz, SnoBorderZero ! Name the movie John Carpenter wrote before directing Halloween (1978). Pop quiz, PG Cooper ! Name the movie Irvin Kershner directed before making Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (1980). The answer to both questions is Eyes of Laura Mars (1978). Inspired by the works of Mario Bava and Dario Argento, Eyes of Laura Mars is an American interpretation of the Italian's giallo genre. Basically - an old-fashioned murder mystery combined with 1960's New Wave sexuality and 1970's slasher horror. The movie follows the story of Laura Mars (Faye Dunaway), a New York fashion photographer who likes to depicts sex and violence in her work, and whose life is turned upside down when a serial killer uses her pictures as inspiration for his murders. To make matters worse, whenever there's a new victim, she gets visions of their death from the killer's point-of-view. Basically - this was John Carpenter experimenting with the POV shots that he would later use in Halloween. Even though Irvin Kershner was directing, Carpenter was still able to test the concept in some shape or form. And this is really what makes Eyes of Laura Mars an interesting movie - it's visually fun to watch. The story and characters are run-of-the-mill - apparently ruined by the meddling of notorious producer Jon Peters - but Kershner's eye for cinematography and Carpenter's storytelling devices elevate what could have been a nonsensical shooting script. There's also the added bonus of a "young" Tommy Lee Jones as the detective who's trying to catch killer while also romancing the leading lady. So if you ever get the chance, check out Eyes of Laura Mars. It's worth watching at least once. Black Moon Rising (1986)Written by John Carpenter, and featuring Linda Hamilton’s titties, Black Moon Rising stars “a young” Tommy Lee Jones as a thief who has 3 days to steal a high-tech car or Bubba Smith will have him for dinner. The action scenes are surprisingly impressive. There’s some Fast & Furious type moments that will catch people off guard. Fast & Furious is the Tarantino of meathead films. The list of movies it ripped off gets longer the more digging you do. Anyway, action scenes aside and Linda Hamilton’s breasts aside, Black Moon Rising isn’t particularly noteworthy. The plot is thin and so is Tommy Lee Jones’ hairline.

ANGEL (1984)I love Netflix and any streaming site that offers reasonable prices, but there's also no denying that it has killed the art of advertising. There's an entire generation that will never know the thrill's of walking into a video store and renting a movie solely based on the cover. Sure, someone can create an amusing title or an attention-grabbing photo for a movie on rental/streaming sites, but user ratings and reviews will kill any false illusions right away. The "risk" of watching movies has been obliterated. That's why movies like Angel no longer exist. It's about a 15-year-old honor roll student who moonlights as a prostitute. The pervert in all of us is intrigued by the premise and the poster/cover does an exceptional job of sealing the deal, but unfortunately, Angel is a very uneventful movie. It's basically a sappy story about a girl who's abandoned by her parents and finds a new family on the streets of Hollywood Blvd. If it weren't for the sub-plot involving a serial killer, Angel could almost pass for a Disney movie. The saving grace is the director's decision to cast respectable actors in the roles. They fill the screen with strong emotions, good humor and a 1980's charm that is difficult to resist. Angel doesn't deliver what it promises, but it won't leave you empty-handed either. $17 mil in 1984 is actually a pretty decent return for an R-rated movie like this. The pervs came out in droves. AVENGING ANGEL (1985)I had very low expectations for this movie and it couldn't even meet those. Released exactly a year after the original, it somehow takes place several years later and features our high school aged prostitute as a twentysomething on the verge of graduating law school. She's drawn back into the streets after a police officer friend of hers is gunned down by the mob. She vows to stick a sixshooter in between her legs and seek revenge. This could have been an hilarious Death Wish 3 type movie and it certainly has its moments in which that's the case. There's a scene with a guy slipping on a wet floor and sliding out the window of a building. I shit you not. I tried to find a clip on YouTube but there wasn't any. Get your shit together, 1godzillafan. Anyway, it has its silly moments but it's mostly kinda boring. What hurts it the most is the recasting of the main character. The girl in the first movie is really sweet and charming. Here they cast Betsy Russell who is great in 80's sex comedies but is dull as hell in a more "serious" role. They don't even show her tits. How can you cast Betsy Russell and not show her tits? Get your shit together, 1godzillafan.
