21 HOURS AT MUNICH (1976)



10 years ago, Steven Spielberg made a movie about the Israeli government ordering secret agents to assassinate 11 Palestinians who were involved in the terrorist attack against their people at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany. But the film didn't dwell too much on what happened at the Olympics. It was focused on the revenge plot. So if you want to watch "a prequel" to the spy story in Spielberg's Munich, you have to go all the way back to the 1970's.

Released only 4 years after the events at the Olympics, 21 Hours at Munich is a detailed recreation of a Palestinian terrorist group holding Israeli athletes hostage in exchange for certain people being released from prisons in Israel. 21 Hours at Munich was originally broadcast on the ABC television network in the United States, but released theatrically in the rest of the world. This was a common thing in the 1970's. Spielberg's 1971 movie, Duel, is a good example of a film that had the same release platform. So don't be discouraged. It has high production value. It was made in the exact locations where the real life events took place. And it stars Academy Award winner William Holden and Italian star Franco Nero. That's Nero in the photo I posted. So if he looks like the bad guy from Die Hard 2, that's because it's him. He's also the original Django. Doomsday

Anyway, the movie does a good job of recreating the events of that day. For historical reasons, I think people should consider watching it. Be be warned. It follows the procedural format. The Israeli hostages are mostly in the background. And it's very emotionless. But you could probably accuse the Spielberg movie of similar things. PhantomKnight

Always loved the song (which was oddly hard to find on iTunes and Amazon last time I checked), never saw the movie.

Haven't seen Deep Cover, but judging by the picture of Goldblum and Morpheus, I stand by my C rating.

Bound for Glory (1976)



While Dracula and PG Cooper masturbate to this year's Academy Awards, featuring a group of movies that will be forgotten in 6 months, let's take a trip to 40 years ago and re-visit the legendary 1976 Academy Awards. The Best Picture nominees were Rocky, Taxi Driver, Network, All the President's Men and Bound for Glory. Wait. Bound... bound... bound for glory? What the fuck is that? A sports movie? A war movie? A... superhero movie? No... no... none of those. It's a Depression Era movie starring David Carradine. 1976. A year that also featured The Omen, Carrie, Marathon Man, Mel Brooks' Silent Movie, Silver Streak and The Outlaw Josey Wales. They gave the 5th slot to Bound for Glory. A movie so forgotten that when David Carradine died jerking off there wasn't a single mention of it by anyone. Death Race 2000 is more fondly remembered. Let that sink in. So should I just blind hate this movie? Nah. Of course not. I watched it. It's good. It's just... well... you'll see.

Inspired by the life of folk singer Woody Guthrie, his claim to fame is This Land is Your Land, the movie follows his road to success in Depression Era America. It has Academy Award winning cinematography. It's the first movie to use the steadicam, although it was better utilized in Rocky. The music is good. It has good performances. There's really nothing bad in it. It's just a two and a half hour movie about a redneck singing folk songs during the Depression. Who was this movie made for? Old people... in 1976. Even 40 years ago old people were spoiling the Academy Awards. Things don't change.

Look, honestly, it's a fine movie. Director Hal Ashby has classics under his belt. Kevin Smith wishes his career were that good. But if you're gonna nominate it for Best Picture, alongside Taxi Driver, people expect a higher level of quality. I would argue that being nominated is the worst thing that happened to this movie. The hype killed it. That's why I'm so tough on the Academy Awards. If you're gonna label something as Best Picture it better earn it. You don't want people to watch the movie and say, "it's good but not Best Picture good." Or worse, "Best Picture? That movie was awful." Things like this hurt movies and the organization. Bound for Glory could have been a hidden gem. It could have been an underrated Hal Ashby movie. Instead, it's a Best Picture nominee people forget 6 months after watching.
