Instead of playing out the next season? Hmm, as a Yankees fan that just saw Derek Jeter's farewell season I would think Kobe would want to do the same to say good-bye to the fans. At the same time, the Lakers are a disaster and going nowhere so maybe it's not a bad idea. His body can't handle it anymore. Basketball and baseball are VERY different sports. He told the L.A. Times that every bone and muscle in his body hurts. He's done.

Maybe shut it down the rest of this year to do a farewell tour next season? I personally love seeing the Lakers suck ass so I could care less.

I like the Lakers. The Magic team from the '80s is one of my favorites. And I was a huge fan of the Kobe-Shaq team from the 90s/00s. So a farewell tour would be nice but highly unlikely.

Yeah, I don't blame him. I wouldn't want to play on a team where Nick Young is your next best player either.

Yeah, I'm with you Franklin. Kobe knows the Lakers got nothing these next two years so he's solely focused on his legacy now and doing things right. The guy isn't going to announce at the end of the season he's done, he's too much of an egomaniac to not make a huge deal out of it. He's going to milk it for all it's worth and do a farewell tour next season.
Plus, the guy aint walking away from the $20mil+ that they owe him next year. We're talking about Kobe, not Tim Duncan.

SnoBorderZeroI don't know if a "farewell tour" would work since the Lakers are such a joke. Is this really how you wanna see Kobe go? It's like when Michael Jordan played for the Wizards. It's an era best forgotten. In my mind, Jordan ended his career in Game 6 of the `98 Finals. And in my mind, Kobe - and Phil Jackson - ended their career beating the Celtics.

That would be the case... if he had retired after the NBA Finals that year. Idk, the Lakers know he's their only reason for butts in those expensive seats. I'm sure they'd love to trot him out there like a show pony next year.

I watched the game last night and TNT pointed out how people were disappointed that Kobe didn't even show up for the Pheonix game. At this point, the Lakers know Kobe is done and are working hard to built a team without him.

He talks a big game, but he knows the Lakers are going to be marginally better if at all next year. What does he have to play for? He's rich beyond any man's wildest dreams, there's no chance the team will compete for a championship, etc. I know and respect his love for the game, but that can't be the only thing carrying him along.

Yeah, that's true. At the same time, are people gonna pay top dollar to watch Nick Young or Jeremy Lin? If they're gonna pay all that money to watch the Lakers lose, they at least want to see Kobe score 25+ points. Clippers are the hot ticket in town, Lakers are only surviving on loyalty and history at this point.

Yup, I think if anything this makes it more likely. Kobe is an ego-maniac, he's not about to go out like this.
Nick Young is licking his chops, he's gonna hoist up 40 shots a night now.

It really doesn't matter. He has one year left in his contract. If he continues to be injury prone, he's done. Whether he likes it or not.

Well on the bright side it wasn't his ankle or ACL or whatever it was that kept him out these last two years, it's a completely separate injury. Still a debilitating one, but still.

I could not care less about any of the All-Star weekend festivities. When I was a kid it was always a big deal to me, but not anymore.

I was an NBA addict in the 90s. Bulls were my team...obvs. Then MJ retired and I got hooked on Tim Hardaway and Alonzo Mourning and the Heat. I only recently discovered that the Heat didn't exist until the 80s! Crazy.
I also have to admit that my local sports shop had no Bulls or Heat jerseys left when I wanted to buy one so I got a Grant Hill Pistons vest...which I also loved.
Then MJ retired. Which was bullshit.
In the middle of all that MJ and Nike made the greatest commercial of all time. I work in advertising now and it's still the best thing I've ever seen:
Why do you think the successors to MJ's throne have been plagued by injury? I'm thinking D Rose and D Wade primarily, but it seemes anyone now that rises to the top of the NBA only stays there for a limited time until they get benched by an injury.

That's a good question. It's hard to understand actually, especially given that front offices will always tell you how they have top of the line medical staffs and equipment and that they're far better than they were 20 years ago. Also, a hotly debated issue is coaches resting players to keep them fresh for the playoffs and to avoid injury. Injuries though have been high, and critics of resting players will always point to the eras before this one where players like Jordan, Malone, Stockton, etc. would never take a game off to rest unless they were very hurt. So why with all these medical advancements and even "strategies" to seemingly protect the players are the injury rates still so high? Also, the league will call a foul on anything today, they don't let the guys play physical ball like they did in the '80s and '90s so it can't be that. Injuries will happen, but seeing guys like Durant and Rose being so plagued by major injuries the last few years is alarming, and I'm not sure what the league can really do about it.
