I garantee you George Lucas would say Lord Of The Rings were good movies for what the movie did for the dead fantasy genre. Star Wars is not better because its not the same type of film. LOTR and Star Wars was good. Its just that Ringers have more pride in the movies then Star War nerds do. But i am neither for I am movie fans and read lotr after. Now I read the Hobbit before the movie but not the 1977 classic.

I liked it well enough. However, one thing I think anyone can agree they did better in The Hobbit than they did in Lord of the Rings is how they closed out the films. In The Lord of the Rings the music always bled into the credits, whereas in The Hobbit it was always a distinct cut to credits, meaning if Peter Jackson (or fans) want to make a singular edit of The Hobbit it can be done rather painlessly. Doing so in The Lord of the Rings would be much trickier since the credits music actually begins during the film and continues when the credits begin to roll.

I liked the first 15 minutes and the last half better than the middle. This didn't need to be 3 films. Two would have been enough. The action was fun but sooooo choreographed. You could get away with that with the Elves because of their grace, but it felt like a video game where all the action is triggered just so for a unrealistically smooth set piece. Dwarfs are supposed to be brawlers, right??
A lot of the humor was silly and forced, virtually no charm. It was fun to see some of the cameos with different allegiances and Martin Freeman was the best part of the whole affair. There was a really good movie in there somewhere but it got bogged down by all the narrative narassism. It became the pieces instead of the whole. I wouldn't call it soulless but rather gluttoness. They wanted everything in there and as a result its just a big mess of overly emotional moments and cgi orgies with no real connection to each other or for the audience.
Overall....I don't hate it, just disappointed. You don't get the same emotional resonance at the end either (as oppose to LOTR) because this a battle over one piece of land and not an epic conflict for existence of Middle Earth. I know they were trying to set up the return of Sauron and the tie in at Bag End at the very end was neat, so maybe if you rewatched this before a viewing of LOTR the stakes might seem higher. But it won't fix the bad writing and awkward pacing.
C+ (for effort)

"Hobbit" is a great example of never ever doing prequels... Star Wars also applies... Here we go "Rogue One" I don't think anyone will be surprised if that is also a let down.

He "wing nut"ted it. Damn I'm a nerd.
But yeah, I think he spent a lot of time preparing for Lord of the Rings, and he even says so much in that short clip. He had everything down. He never wanted to direct The Hobbit and was basically figuring things out as he went.

Its pretty sad that this made money and people who made Warcraft who tried i think pretty hard cant reach an american audience How is that sad? Hobbit is such a better film then Warcraft... I'm not defending Hobbit it is no where close to touching the greatness of Lord of the Rings. But Warcraft was all around bad film, Hobbit films are much better.

Winged it in the sense that all kinds of things were changed during production on the fly as they were filming. It's all there in the commentaries.
Obviously not to the same extent as The Hobbit (no storyboards/pre-vis? wtf?) but he's clearly got previous.

Spielberg had to improvise on Jaws cause the shark wasn't working. Burton never had a final script on Batman cause of the writer's strike. There's two versions of Anchorman cause the actors were given free reign. But if you're standing in front of a green screen all day, there's not much to do.

Its pretty sad that this made money and people who made Warcraft who tried i think pretty hard cant reach an american audience How would you possibly know the effort level between the productions? It's not like people who worked on The Hobbit films didn't bust their ass, in fact they likely worked even harder because of the lack of preproduction. This wasn't a great movie, but one of my defenses of it is that even though The Hobbit films are flawed, they're still better than the majority of fantasy films made. Warcraft on the other hand just looks like a piece of shit, and looks like I was right. Critics and audiences (China doesn't count, they always eat up our bullshit just look at Terminator: Genisys) didn't give a shit about Warcraft for a reason.
