I caught this tonight to finish out the series. Overall the movie was pretty good, although the CGI seemed overbearing in parts and the campiness level was a little off the charts. I think most of the theater groaned during the scene where Legolas was jumping from falling bricks to falling bricks on the bridge fight with Bolg. It just looked like a crappy video game. Most of the Orcs were cannon fodder and more or less as effective and, in the end, as menacing as Battle Droids. Jackson seems to get lost trying sometimes to explain too much with too little time to give it proper attention and things get lost in translation quickly if you haven't read the books. It left a nice lead in for The Lord of the Rings series in the end though. While there was more action in this one, there just seemed to be too much going on to make it a masterpiece. With the LOTR series, although CGI was used, I never really felt like I was watching a bad video game that pulls me out of the movie itself. This one definitely lost me several times for that very reason. Did Jackson somehow hook up with George Lucas on this last installment? Worth watching if you have seen all the others, and not a bad movie at all, just a few decisions that were made in making it that seemed a little strange considering they had a working formula the first trilogy. 7.5/10And for the life of me I can't seem to figure out how to create a poll on this new board. Can a mod help with that please? Thanks.

If I could use one word to describe this movie it would be preposterous.
Pure fight porn. The weakest love story I've seen in a blockbuster for some time. CGI overload. Awful exposition and shoehorned in nods to LOTR.
Freeman was great, though.
What really bugs me, as a Tolkien fanatic, is how much PJ downplays Gandalf's power in both this and the LOTR. As someone who grew up in awe of this character, thinking him the most powerful being in all of Middle Earth aside from Sauron (words he himself says in LOTR), to then see his celluloid representation be so easily defeated, or do a few takedowns with a staff as if he was just an old man with some basic fighting skills, is incredibly disappointing and unforgivable.
All that said, the action was relentless so I was never bored in between all of the groaning. Armitage and Evans gave good accounts of themselves.
I just hope that PJ and Weta now leave any possible future Tolkien adaptations well alone as they've both lost their touch.
6.5/10

Like the other two Hobbit movies, I'll just wait for HBO. I'm proud I didn't contribute money to this stupid trilogy.

I've heard that this were expanding it into three movie really shows its strain. As a fan of the mythology this is disappointing news.

Time will tell. Peter Jackson says he's gonna focus on small, New Zealand set movies. Let's see if that's true or not.

One, focused and tonally consistent Hobbit film would have been fine. Instead, Jackson had to try and match the grandeur of The Lord of the Rings and the result is this sad excuse for a trilogy. I don't mean to come off too harsh (I don't hate these movies), but they are so misguided and flawed in their basic conception that it's hard to support them.

I don't disagree. But a revisit wasn't necessarily unwarranted.

One focused and tonally consistent Hobbit film would have been fine. Once this movie is on Blu-Ray you'll start to see Fan Edits show up on the Internet. I remember when The Phantom Menace was released on VHS/DVD, almost immediately a Jar Jar Less version popped up on the Internet. I laughed when George Lucas tried to have it removed but quickly realized how pointless it is.

It really is too bad the other forum got closed, I had some great rants about how Jackson was going to be our generation's Lucas and everyone kinda told me to calm down (as if I'm not calm... I'M CALM DAMNIT!) and started being Jackson apologists for making three three hour movies out of a three hundred page book.

I've posted this elsewhere but my reactions about hearing the progress of the Hobbit was this.
Media: They're making a Hobbit movie! DDay: Alright, it's about time. Media: However...they're making it into two movies. DDay: Hmm, well I think I can get behind that. Could be a fuller experience. Media: Did we say two? We actually meant three. DDay: Oh fuck you.

I can't blame Peter Jackson. The Hobbit 3 made almost $25 million last night. It's gonna be a HUGE hit. Jackson is giving people what they want. It's a reminder that people bitching on the Internet are the minority.
