That's not how I read it. It means they MIGHT use him, but if not, they'd call him Jones Jr. or something. They just haven't decided yet.

General thoughts:
-After Star Wars, Disney saw just how profitable a film can be even/especially when you bring aboard the original cast. The nostalgia factor can never be underestimated. -Even the most ardent fans of The Force Awakens have to agree that Episode VII was a very safe and calculated movie. It was entertaining yet it didn't take any chances minus the Han Solo climax and went over a lot of old ground. I think it's safe to assume that we can expect much of the same with this. Maybe not going after the Ark again but I believe they'll at least look at what made the others more fun and also look at what failed with KotCS. -In that same vein, I think there's probably some sentiment of the filmmakers knowing that they dropped the ball the last time around and them wanting to go out with a bang. If they can generate that perception without outright saying 'we screwed up' that could get people excited for this one. It's not a great way to base business decisions but I'm sure it's in the back of their minds.
Just off the top of my head.

Indiana Jones and the One without George Lucas
Further to Dooms' comments, I wonder if they will go all out for Connery...

At this point why not? Sure he's retired but DOLLA DOLLA BILL$ YALL. At the very least it would be a good effort to fans that they're trying to make something special.

Play it safe, go with Fountain of Youth or Atlantis.
We'll know for a fact Shia isn't returning.

Haha - I forgot he died, too... We've had the ark and aliens, though, so I doubt it'd be much trouble for them to explain away a resurrection. He once bathed in the healing water of Christ after all...

I usually like to stay as optimistic as I can about things, so I'll echo Doomsday's sentiment that Spielberg and Ford know Crystal Skull sucked and they want to make up for it rather than let that be the last Indiana Jones movie they make, and George Lucas not having as big a hand in this one -- if at all, though I wouldn't be shocked if Spielberg maybe ran some stuff by him -- can only be a step in the right direction.

David Koepp just got brought on board to script. Although he has a few solid credits to his name, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is not one of them. This worries me very much.

Everybody knows that George Lucas is the one to blame for Crystal Skull. He's the one who insisted on aliens. That's why it took 19 years to make. Spielberg finally said, "alright, George. Fuck it. We're gonna die soon. I'll do your stupid aliens if it means getting the movie made." Spielberg getting Koepp on board means they're making the movie they wanted to make in 2008.

But for weird people like myself, once a movie franchise has a "hole" in it, the idea of making up for it is already a non-issue. If a bad movie is made, then a good one again, its harder to ignore the bad movie. Just cut your losses, I say.

Hopefully we also get the movie that we've been waiting for. Despite his age, Harrison Ford was one of the highlights of The Force Awakens, and I'm thrilled they're making one more. If this is the last time Harrison is donning the fedora, I just want it to be an excellent send off.
