I need to re-watch. People talk it up like it's a cult classic, but I don't recall if I liked it or not.

No one's denying the movie is good in parts. Even Kevin Smith movies are good in parts. That’s a low bar to achieve.

Yes, but Clue is consistently good. Well there's an argument to be made that needing to roll the dice to move to the different rooms is entirely unnecessary.

THEY CALL ME MISTER TIBBS (1970) / THE ORGANIZATION (1971)Did you know they made, not one, but TWO sequels to In the Heat of the Night? Both feature Sidney Poitier as Virgil Tibbs and both you'll forget exist the moment you finish watching them. The mindset behind these movies are muddled. They definitely weren't trying to capitalize on the success of the original because these sequels could exist in their own universe. Gone is the south. Gone is the racial tension between a black cop, a white cop and a backwards town. Here you have a run-of-the-mill cop in San Francisco solving run-of-the-mill crimes. It's like they watched Steve McQueen's Bullit and thought, "let's do that but with a black guy instead." For the time period, yeah, that could have been seen as progressive. These movies do sort-of precede blaxploitation and are definitely classier than blaxploitation, so it is cool to see a black man as the star of a commercial Hollywood movie, but the fact they're so vanilla is a major disservice. During this time you had French Connection and Dirty Harry breaking new ground, meanwhile the sequels to an equally ground breaking movie are taking the safe route. Minorities don't dig stuff like this - it's one step forward and then two steps backwards.

Since Doomsday is online, let me quickly mention two god awful movies I watched recently. The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean (1972)Paul Newman. John Milius. John Houston. Should be awesome, right? Wrong. It’s a light comedy about a dark subject matter. When done right you can get a Three Stooges or Looney Tunes or Mel Brooks. When done wrong you get - this. I think the problem is this movie really had nothing to say. It was just a bunch of wacky scenes strung together. Since PG Cooper sucks at video essays and teaching these days, let me step in and educate. Right way: Wrong way: Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid (1973)Matter of time till Dracula badmouths Young Guns but at least those movies were coherent and were based in history. No clue what the fuck was going on here. It’s just a series of musical montages. Great soundtrack though.

Since PG Cooper sucks at video essays and teaching these days, let me step in and educate. Just slow and busy, my man. Actually I've just completed another video, but it's for the class I teach so I don't think I'll be sharing it on my channel. I'm also not crazy about Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid.

I'm also not crazy about Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid. Expected you to defend it. Seems like your type of movie. Terence Malick esque.

PG&BtK was screwed over by the studio and probably would have made more sense if Peckinpah had been left to his own devices.

‘Disorienting’ is the word I’d use, but like I said, it’s probably because I grew up with Young Guns and have a different perspective on the Billy the Kid lore. I just didn’t know what the heck was going on in the movie.
