I can’t believe I’m about to say this
Joss Whedon 100% made a better film
This thing is un watchable
Kevin Feige deserves all the praise
The man is a genius
And built an entire story arc with multiple movie’s and characters with an entire universe
Too any person reading this who hasn’t seen this, go watch the MCU Films. This is trash and Snyder does truly suck

I started this at 1 p.m. this afternoon, thinking I would maybe stop around the 2-hour mark or so. Ended up breezing through the whole thing. That was 4 hours? Felt like two. Fucking loved it. All copies/prints of the Whedon Cut should be burned from existence. This is the vaccine side effects they were talking about.

What’s with this 4:3 ratio The idea was to have a consistent aspect ratio on IMAX (instead of doing the Nolan thing where it switches between the two during action scenes) and then crop it to 1.85:1 for regular theaters. This being the definitive cut they show the full frame. I liked it, interesting to see this kind of movie framed that way.

They 100% lost way more money. The budget to that movie is $300 million, and you sure as hell don't see it in the movie. The reason it's that high is because it inflated due to Whedon reshoots and MOUSTACHES GALORE! (And if Ray Fisher is to be believed, changing skin color in post) It's kind of similar to The Amazing Spider-Man, where the reported budget is around $220 million. Of that, only about $150 million is the actual movie, the rest was money they burned on Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 4 before pulling the plug. I forget, how far along in production were they for SM4? They were like within a month or two from shooting. I remember just a few days before they announced that Alvin Sargent was taking a pass on the script, so the cancellation was a huge blindside out of nowhere.

Yeah, I remember at the time intently following the production and like you said, it was sudden. That's pretty much all I remember.

I was cuddling on the couch with my then-girlfriend when the news broke. She'll tell you it was no joke that I screamed "FUCKING BULLSHIT!" out of the blue.

I forget, how far along in production were they for SM4? They were like within a month or two from shooting. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spider-Man_3By December 2009, John Malkovich was in negotiations to play Vulture and Anne Hathaway would play Felicia Hardy, though she would not have transformed into the Black Cat as in the comics but a new superpowered figure, the Vulturess. However, Raimi stated in a 2013 interview that Hathaway would have portrayed Black Cat if Spider-Man 4 had been made. Sony Pictures announced in January 2010 that plans for Spider-Man 4 had been canceled due to Raimi's withdrawal from the project. Raimi reportedly ended his participation due to his doubt that he could meet the planned May 6, 2011 release date while at the same time upholding the film creatively. Raimi purportedly went through four iterations of the script with different screenwriters and still "hated it".

To be fair, I remember reading a rough outline of the script, and it didn't sound very good. Apparently it was going to end with Peter murdering the Vulture and being so disgusted with himself that he retired from being Spider-Man. Sony's intent with the ending was to either set up a Spider-Man 5 where he has to come out of retirement or to just end it there with him vowing never to be Spidey again and reboot it anyway.
I doubt the movie would have went over well with fans. I think Raimi was struggling to get it to work artistically too.
Still, Raimi walked because he asked for more time on the script and they said no. They then decided to delay a Spider-Man movie a year anyway now that he was gone. They were playing it like assholes.

They pretty much hired James Vanderbilt to reboot the series while Raimi was still actively working on Spider-Man 4.

The 4:3 aspect ratio is cool and the coolest aspect of the release.

The details are muddled, and I’m not in the mood to dig through old news articles, but I’m sure the original plan was to make 6 movies. Even during development of Spider-Man 4, Raimi told the press of plans to do two more. At some point, likely after the success of Spider-Man 2, Sony (and Avi Arad) figured they had a golden goose and wanted to milk the rights. I believe Sony has the same deal that Fox had with X-Men. They have to make a movie every 3 years to retain the rights. I think they wanted to reboot the series into something more flexible and purposely sabotaged Spider-Man 3. Notice how Spider-Man 3 wraps everything up with a bow. I don’t think they ever wanted a Spider-Man 4. They wanted to wrap up the Raimi trilogy and move on to something more sustainable.

I remember they were touting a second trilogy, but Tobey Maguire would only do more films if Raimi directed them. But I think after they already started prepping Spider-Man 4 they had already had the scent that Spidey wasn't the trendy thing at the moment. A lot of this is presumption on my part, but I think they wanted to reboot Spider-Man initially to keep up with Nolan's rebooted Batman. If you look at that first Amazing Spider-Man, they are chasing several trends with it. They made a grittier, less fantastical film because that was in style, and littered it with a romance that seems straight out of a young adult book, possibly because Twilight was supper hot. The problem is Avengers came out just before it and the trend shifted majorly. Then you get to Amazing Spider-Man 2 and they're trend chasing again. It's a much brighter and more humorous movie, and it's planting seeds for spin-offs because now they want in on the cinematic universe pie. It just feels to me like Sony was upset they weren't the benchmark anymore, and just started chasing what was.

Taking the Snyder Cut into account Justice League springs all the way from number 77 to number 25 on my ranking of 2017 movies.

Yeah I just finished this, and it ended up being pretty damn good.
He needs an editor, but he nails a ton of beats.
I'm probably somewhere between a 7 or 8 of 10.
At a 2 hr 40 minute cut I'd be around an 8.5.

Lol, why is it in this aspect ratio? Yea the aspect ratio is extremely irritating. It was filmed for IMAX and Snyder's "ARTISTIC VISION!" The idea is that they wanted to show it in IMAX at a consistent ratio instead of doing the Christopher Nolan thing where it suddenly gets bigger during the action scenes. Yeeeeeah... I'm going to get around to watching this eventually, but the 4:3 ratio is a massive turn-off. I tried starting it and was like "what the hell?". Looked it up just to find it's intentional. Didn't continue it at that point, but I'm still curious to watch it. Keeping it consistent on traditional IMAX screens is one thing. I get it. That's totally cool. Forcing that perspective on modern televisions, where this is being experienced, is just crazy to me.

To be honest, that's mostly the same argument against letterbox on a full frame TV.
Maybe it's just me because I watch a lot of classic television and and 1.37:1 filmmaking on my modern TV as is, so I don't see how this is a big deal at all. And then there was The Lighthouse. That was, what, 1.2:1?
This discourse reminds me of my dad insisting to watch everything on stretch mode when he got a widescreen TV because it HAD to fill the entire screen or why bother having a TV?

I seldom watch old 4:3 shows. The only exceptions are some comedies/sitcoms, but how those look cinematically is kind of irrelevant. You're watching it solely for the comedy and they look generally cheap anyway. Sound system and size of screen? Doesn't matter. But for a cinematic experience like this? No... just no. The 4:3 aspect ratio is stupid.
