My in-laws were some of those people you may have heard of who watched A Million Ways To Die In The West thinking it was going to be a classic western. I wish I could have seen their faces. Speaking of my uncle, I went to watch Talented Mr. Ripley with him. Afterwards he said, “I didn’t pay money to watch Matt Damon play a fruitcake.” lol.

Too many people probably thought it was a movie about raisins. For sure. Reminds me of when I asked if my Dad wanted to see The Tree of Life. "Who wants to see a movie about a fucking tree?" I know plenty of people who've seen Evil Dead.

My uncle (my mom’s younger brother) was still in his 20’s back then. He was younger then, than I am now, which is terrifying to think about. It’d be the equivalent of you making that comment right now, except it was 1999, and people were allowed to openly mock the LGBTQ. Even Ben Affleck roasted Matt Damon on SNL for playing that character. Although, hilariously, that movie would probably be more controversial now than it was back then.

I'm thinking Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, or Pit and the Pendulum. Each cited as early sci-fi or horror influences, and something about those 50s/60s effects is really charming.

This is where I'd interpret the question as being at the studio premiere.
And it would be mostly to harangue Fox for not promoting Idiocracy.

This is where I'd interpret the question as being at the studio premiere. 16 Blocks — Terrible movie, but man, one last time to party with Richard Donner. Can’t pass that up. Although I’m sure the man still believes he’ll direct Lethal Weapon 5 someday. She’s the Man — I could care less about this movie or anyone involved, but it’s a chance for PG Cooper to meet Amanda Bynes. Maybe he’ll get lucky. Actually, it’s very likely he’ll get lucky. V for Vendetta — I think Natalie Portman’s hair had grown by then. Inside Man — I went to a Spike Lee college seminar/Q&A like a year before this movie came out. He hyped doing another film with Denzel. Might as well go to the premiere. Slither — Pre fame James Gunn. Pam from the Office. I’m sure the party would be lit. At the very least I could warn Elizabeth Banks against doing a Charlie’s Angels reboot. Stick It — Doomsday, SnoBorderZero and I are going to this. For reasons. Mission: Impossible III — I’m locking J.J. Abrams, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci in a room and won’t let them out until they agree to quit the business. And I’ll make sure to get it in writing. Let’s hope my actions don’t inadvertently create a second Trump term. Poseidon — I need to hide somewhere after locking J.J. Abrams in a room and making him sign a contract against his will. This seems like a safe place. The Da Vinci Code — Tom Hanks and I can laugh about his hair. X-Men: The Last Stand — Cock blocking Brett Ratner will be fun. Nacho Libre — I’m just here to support the movie. Click — Adam Sandler is a good dude. And this is one of his better movies. I’m sure the after party will be fun. Superman Returns — It's our duty to rescue every underage boy that inexplicably showed up to the Hollywood premiere of a Bryan Singer movie. The Devil Wears Prada — Reasons. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest — PhantomKnight and I will be the first ones there. Clerks II — I’m just here to be the lookout while Doomsday takes care of business. Let’s just say... there won’t be a Clerks III. You’re welcome. Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby — I’m just here to support the movie. Snakes on a Plane — Why not? The Wicker Man — An evening out with 1godzillafan is not something I’d pass up on. The Departed — Goes without saying. The Prestige — Goes without saying. Borat — Still one of the best moviegoing experiences I’ve ever had. The premiere, I’m sure, will be just as epic. Casino Royale — Goes without saying. Happy Feet — Just here to drop off my application for Mad Max: Fury Road. Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny — Are you gonna pass up on this after party? Apocalypto — I’m just here to witness Doomsday fall asleep next to Mel Gibson again. Rocky Balboa — Goes without saying. Night at the Museum — I’m just here to witness all these comedy giants mock their own movie.

Here we're getting into a year where I actually was going to movies on opening nights and the wildest premiere that year, by far, was Borat. The whole audience was laughing like hyenas and everyone felt united in that movie's subversions.

The whole audience was laughing like hyenas and everyone felt united in that movie's subversions. Yes! The Departed was also great. You could hear a pin drop when Martin Sheen got thrown out the building. And I’ve shared this story a million times, but when I went to watch X-Men: The Last Stand, some idiot in the audience kept shouting, “I’m the Juggarnaut, bitch” anytime Juggarnaut appeared on screen. Then when Juggarnaut actually says that in the movie, the entire theatre erupted into laughter. God, I miss midnight premieres. And the part where Wolverine kicks the guy in the balls and says, “grow those back” had people howling. This clip has both scenes:

Also: Gamera the Brave
Will also note that I'm one of the few people who saw Slither opening weekend.

It's not an opening night story, but one of the best theater going moments of my life is when my Dad surprised me by taking me to see Casino Royale on a school night. What a time to be alive.

If we're talking the studio/Hollywood premiere, then Dead Man's Chest. Cause, duh, it's me.
But of course, that movie I did see on its opening day/night. Went to a 5:30 p.m. showing, where there ended up being only a couple of empty seats and the whole audience was having a blast with the movie.

Yes. For all the shit the movies get online (and continues to get), people in real life loved them. At least the initial trilogy. Some of the best crowds I’ve encountered.

Yeah, this was the point where I did a fair share of opening night/midnight showings.
Either Casino Royale or Departed.

Even the much-maligned (online at least) At World's End, which I saw more than once on its opening weekend, I saw with big crowds too -- each of whom were into it both times. Hell, even the IMAX crowd I saw On Stranger Tides with really enjoyed that one, too.

I watched Spider-Man 3 in its midnight premiere and the theatre was dead silent. Two weeks (or three) later, I went to that 7pm premiere of At World’s End. 7pm premieres are the norm now, but unique at the time, and you’d think it was a football game by how the audience was reacting. People loved it. But you went online and you’d think At World’s End was Spider-Man 3 by how big the backlash was. Sometimes there’s a disconnect between the nerds and the general public.

Would be interesting to see Scarface during a time when it was socially acceptable to snort cocaine in a theater.
