I was the biggest critic of Sicario in 2015. That was probably my Joker that year. But it’s a movie I continually go back to. The script is faulty. No doubt. But it’s a masterclass in filmmaking and Villeneuve outdoes Nolan at his own games. I chuckle at PG Cooper saying it’s worse than Blade Runner, a movie plagued with pacing issues. I've never denied that Sicario is well-made, but like Prisoners, Villeneuve is applying the most serious and somber tone to material that isn't nearly as smart it thinks it is. "The world is fucked and to fight monsters you must become a monster". Yawn. You have a film that wants to be this incisive look at the drug wars but also gets a bit of a "fuck yeah" itch in its pants when Benicio del Toro starts murdering drug lords. I’ll take Benicio Del Toro channeling Charles Bronson over Ryan Gosling brooding.

Much as I love Blade Runner 2049, Sicario just does it for me more. Like Neverending said, the filmmaking is superb, it's paced like a motherfucker and the story is gripping no matter if it's "been there, done that." It's certainly also Villenueve's most rewatchable movie.
No matter if I nominate it or someone else does, I'm voting for it.

It's a bad mystery novel that thinks it's Dostoevsky. The stuff with the hunt for the serial killer with the suitcases full of snakes is completely hokey and putting that alongside this depressing story about a completely unsympathetic asshole torturing a retarded guy is rather distasteful. Were it not for Roger Deakin's cinematography it would be a complete turkey. Mystic River did the same basic story outline (father of murdered daughter goes after the wrong person) much much better.

It's not just an issue of "been there, done that", my objection is the film's position is empty cynicism which feels more like edgy nihilism than something built on real substance. It's that Dirty Harry mentality that the world is a cesspool and only a tough guy with a gun can bring justice. I don't mind that as much in Dirty Harry given its ambitions are more simply to be an action-thriller, but when you masquerade as Traffic you invite bigger scrutiny.

It's that Dirty Harry mentality For at least a decade I was in the French Connection > Dirty Harry camp. For a decade now I feel it’s the opposite. I wouldn’t be so dismissive of the “Dirty Harry mentality”. I know it’s popular to hate on cops but the issue isn’t black & white. Also, the best comparison to Sicario would be the TV series 24. Jack Bauer is on par with Jason Bourne in terms of influence. Traffic is the Crash of drug movies.

And I have no problem with that when the filmmaking is as great as it is in Sicario.

Guess I'm gonna have to watch Observe and Report. It's doing some interesting things and has some memorable moments, but it's also kind of a mess with a rather inconsistent tone.
