The CS! AFI Top 100 Movies of the 21st Century - So Far
In this thread, our goal will be to hone in on movies released so far in the 21st century (2000 - 2019) and -- from scratch -- create a list of the top 100 movies to have come out in this timeframe. This list/thread will be exclusively voting-based. However, that doesn't mean you can't make your case for each of your choices if you want to.
Here's how it's going to work:
Rules:
- It has to be a theatrically-released movie. Direct-to-VOD/NETFLIX/HULU/AMAZON PRIME, ETC. DOES NOT COUNT UNLESS IT RECEIVED SOME SORT OF THEATRICAL RUN AS WELL. (Sorry, Avengement)
- Nominees have to have been released from January 1st, 2000 to December 31st, 2019.
- Films can be produced by Britain, Australia/New Zealand, etc. and/or be in a foreign language.
- Films also have to be in the Narrative format, which is another stipulation of the AFI.
Modus Operandi:
- Participants choose two movies at a time to be voted on for entry onto the list. Movies must meet the above criteria.
- Participants then vote on the collected films to be added onto the list. Ideally, this will create 50 nomination/voting rounds, unless there’s a two-way tie for first place in a respective round.
- OFFICIAL VOTES WILL ONLY BE COUNTED AS COMMENTS IN THIS THREAD. This is to avoid any potential shenanigans in the polls. - Nominations/voting will continue until we have 100 films fitting the criteria. Again, you're free to make your case for each nominee if you so choose, to spark debate.
- You are free to nominate movies more than once if yours don't make it in during a respective round.
- Horse trading is allowed, but keep in mind there’s 100 empty slots from the get-go, so there’s lots of real estate to fill. Horse trading will most likely be more of a factor the more the slots fill up. If there ends up being more than 100 by the end of the voting rounds, then we will do some form of a trimming up process to get to 100 exactly.
- Once we have our 100, ordering/positioning on the list comes next. After that, we'll have our list.
- Winners of each round will be listed below on a pre-ranking masterlist as we go along.

Nominations for the first round are now OPEN.
They will stay open until 8/21 at 11 a.m. - how does that sound to everyone? This is to allow as much time as possible for people who may not be on regularly to see this/make their nominations. If everybody who normally participates in these things puts forth nominees, then I figure we’ll have about 16 - maybe - movies to vote on.

There Will Be Blood The Florida Project
There Will Be Blood, just an excellent character study. Might be PTA's best work.
The Florida Project, I think I made my feelings clear in the Film Club. I'm not sure itll make it in the first go, but it should be in there in my opinion.

The Social Network Parasite
Also, can we nominate documentaries? For example, The Act of Killing is in my mind quite possibly the best film of the 2010s. No docs are on the AFI list though so wanted to clarify. Either way, I'll stick with my two nominations.

I don’t think Parasite will count I’m afraid, otherwise I’d throw down Apocalypto and Letters From Iwo Jima.

Yeah, I think we're gonna keep with the "narrative format" as well for this. I'll go back and add that in. Read the rules, guys. Just a friendly FYI.
Also, SnoBorderZero, as stated in the rules, we're also adhering to the AFI's English-language rule as well. So, unfortunately, Parasite will need to be replaced.

As a heads up PhantomKnight, you may want to adjust timeframes or numbers as you go, or next round Nominate 2, vote 2 with 1.5 days each is 150 days before you get to ranking. Smushing the noms and voting rounds together or considering more at a time would be two options

Smushing the noms and voting rounds together or considering more at a time would be two options Yeah, I was thinking about that last night. I was mainly looking at your thread and using your time windows as reference points, but honestly, I'm still trying to figure this out. This is my very first special thread like this.
I'm open to any suggestions. Like, I don't know if nominate 2, vote for 3 would hurry things along any more. Or nominate 3, vote for 4, etc. Also, any thoughts on shorter windows?
One other thing...and this is for everybody...does anybody strongly object to the English-language-only rule? I was thinking that over last night as well -- specifically movies like Parasite, Letters From Iwo Jima and Apocalypto -- and I know movies like those have very adamant supporters on here, but now I'm wondering if I'm handcuffing people like Doomsday too much with that rule.

I think "nominate two vote for three" is pretty helpful because it sort of forces you to at least vote for one movie you didn't nominate. Without it you could theoretically set up a stalemate where everyone just votes for the two movies they nominated and the vote doesn't spread out. Would also be more than happy to open this up to foreign language movies of all kinds, but that's just me. If we're going to move beyond the AFI format enough to include straight-up British movies I don't see why not.

My only thinking is if you want it to be close to the AFI set up, then yeah, follow the rules that you alluded to. But I'm not sure we need to restrict ourselves. I kinda like the idea of opening it up to the Foreign language options as well, seeing as this is ultimately our own thing on here. I don't think we need to adhere to the AFI rules unless you really want to, which in that case is fine.

Alright, we're definitely going the nominate 2, vote for 3 route. Top 2 with the most votes go on the list, unless there's a three-way tie. I mean, I was already planning on that anyway, but just so it's clear. If we need to move to nominate 3 and vote for 4 later on, then we can do that, too.
And donny brings up a good point in regards to the English-language rule. While we can use the AFI format as our basis here doesn't mean we have to be strictly shackled to their rules, too. And in thinking it over since last night myself, it does seem silly in retrospect to limit ourselves to English-speaking features when there's great movies like Parasite, Letters From Iwo Jima and Apocalypto out there -- movies which, like all three of those, would seem stupid not to include.
So...
Starting next voting round, you're free to put up foreign-language films if you want. Or if you want to switch one or both of your current nominees right now, you can. Just be sure to make it obvious that you are.
As of now, we have 20 nominees. SnoBorderZero, I'm counting Parasite as one of yours. And only Deexan and 1godzillafan have yet to put forth nominees. If they want to do so, we'll give them until 7:00 p.m. EST tonight to get them in, otherwise we proceed with voting on these 20 movies.
Sound good?
