Reconsidering the AFI Top 100 The AFI top 100 list was originally created in 1998, and repeated in 2007 but has yet to reappear. In this thread we will review the 2007 list, vote whether we think those films belong on the top 100, vote in new films, and eventually at the end i'm going to ask everyone to rank our new 100 for a composite ranking. For the 2007 list items, we will be voting a simple in/out, and I will double up rounds in order to speed things along. If people want to slow down a round to give people chances to rewatch that's fine as well. Every 10 movies or so, we'll have users submit nominations of items not on our list, with majority rule covering the vacancies presented by the previous 10 considered. New additions can be nominated multiple times during the voting process, and we will have a trim-down or vote-in exercise at the end prior to the ranking stage. I vote to include Vertigo.
I'm torn on having Double Indemnity in as the noir representative of American Cinema. Chinatown is also on the list, but would it make more sense to have The Big Sleep or Cape Fear here rather than Double Indemnity?

Vertigo: Keep
No brainer here. We can debate if this or Psycho or Rear Window are Hitchcock's best film, but all three deserve to be among the greatest American films ever.
Double Indemnity: Keep
Not only is this a fantastic film and one of the top five film-noirs ever made, it separates itself from having the protagonist not be a detective, police officer, or any of the usual tropes and makes him a regular insurance salesman who gets roped into a sinister plot. Throw in Barbara Stanwyck's best performance of her career and brilliant direction by the masterful Billy Wilder and this is one that has earned its keep.

CBS probably isn't interested in airing the specials anymore, so there's no profit motive, also they are probably wary of causing a backlash if whatever list they compile isn't diverse enough for certain tastes so it's more likely to cause bad publicity for them than good publicity. |

But this is the "top 100" films, not the "100 films that most broadly represent cinema," so to me it's a simple matter of whether or not I can think of more than 99 films that are better than a given movie. If one director, writer, or actor just so happens to have made a half dozen such movies, so be it. |
