This pairing brought to you by Robert Altman:
Director: Robert Altman Written by Richard Hooker , Ring Lardner Jr. Starring: Donald Sutherland, Elliott Gould Genre: Courtroom Drama Comedy, Drama, War
Does not appear on 2012's Sight and Sound Polls #56 on 1998's AFI Top 100
Irreverent black comedy following the exploits of a host of offbeat characters at a medical unit during the Korean war, including surgeons Hawkeye Pierce and Trapper John McIntyre who create havoc with their martini parties and practical jokes while the war rages around them. The film spawned a successful television series and won an Oscar for best screenplay.
Trivia: According to Johnny Mandel and Robert Altman, the film's famous theme song was intended to be the "stupidest song ever written". After attempting to write the lyrics himself, Altman said he found it too difficult to write "dumb enough", and instead gave to the task to his fourteen-year-old son. Mike Altman allegedly wrote the lyrics in five minutes, not even expecting to be paid, since he was the director's son.
59. Nashville (1975) Directed by: Robert Altman Written by Joan Tewkesbury Starring: Keith Carradine, Karen Black, Ronee Blakley Genre: Comedy, Drama, Music
Does not appear on 1998's AFI Top 100
In this acclaimed Robert Altman drama, the lives of numerous people in the Tennessee capital intersect in unpredictable ways. Delbert Reese (Ned Beatty) is a lawyer and political organizer who is having difficulties in his marriage to Linnea (Lily Tomlin), a gospel vocalist. Other performers heavily featured in this renowned ensemble production include country singers Barbara Jean (Ronee Blakley) and Connie White (Karen Black), who are rivals in the city's thriving music scene.
Trivia: The film was very much improvised by the actors and actresses, who used the screenplay only as a guide. They spent a great amount of their time in character, and the movie was shot almost entirely in sequence.
My Votes: M*A*S*H: Cut. Anything this movie does is done better by the TV show. Nashville: Keep. If we're going to have an Altman, this is the one for me. Chaotic dialogue talking over each other, giant ensemble piece - it's stuff that's repeated and echoed throughout film after Altman's influence.

MASH: Keep
Nashville: Cut
If Nashville ends up getting cut, might I suggest The Player if we need Robert Altman representation?

Ian, when the layperson thinks of MASH, they think of Alan Alda, Loretta Swit, Jamie Farr, Gary Burghoff, and the rest. Not Altman. Neverending, 1godzillafan, Frizzo the Clown, Jibbs, Wyldstaar, DeexanCome vote. MASH is 3-5, Nashville 4-4.

This pairing brought to you by being the last movies I wanted to discuss:
Director: John G. Avildsen Written by Sylvester Stallone Starring: Sylvester Stallone, Talia Shire, Burt Young Genre: Drama, Sports
Does not appear on 2012's Sight and Sound Polls #78 on 1998's AFI Top 100
Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone), a small-time boxer from working-class Philadelphia, is arbitrarily chosen to take on the reigning world heavyweight champion, Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers), when the undefeated fighter's scheduled opponent is injured. While training with feisty former bantamweight contender Mickey Goldmill (Burgess Meredith), Rocky tentatively begins a relationship with Adrian (Talia Shire), the wallflower sister of his meat-packer pal Paulie (Burt Young).
Trivia: During his audition, Carl Weathers was sparring with Sylvester Stallone and accidentally punched him on the chin. Stallone told Weathers to calm down, as it was only an audition, and Weathers said that if he was allowed to audition with a 'real' actor, not a stand-in, he would be able to do a lot better. Director John G. Avildsen smiled and told Weathers that Stallone was the real actor (and the writer). Weathers looked at Stallone thoughtfully for a moment, and said, "Well, maybe he'll get better." Stallone immediately offered him the role.
Directed by: Clint Eastwood Written by David Webb Peoples Starring: Clint Eastwood, Gene Hackman, Morgan Freeman Genre: Western
Does not appear on 2012's Sight and Sound Polls #98 on 1998's AFI Top 100
When prostitute Delilah Fitzgerald (Anna Thomson) is disfigured by a pair of cowboys in Big Whiskey, Wyoming, her fellow brothel workers post a reward for their murder, much to the displeasure of sheriff Little Bill Daggett (Gene Hackman), who doesn't allow vigilantism in his town. Two groups of gunfighters, one led by aging former bandit William Munny (Clint Eastwood), the other by the florid English Bob (Richard Harris), come to collect the reward, clashing with each other and the sheriff.
Trivia: In the early 1980s, Francis Ford Coppola got ahold of the script, and met with John Malkovich to offer him the role of William Munny. Malkovich recalled: "The offer was not very serious, thank God! I say that for myself and the poor public, and for Clint, absolutely! I would have been a total, total failure. Total! Who would've wanted to see that? I wouldn't! I would've just been acting-schmacting. There are some things you can only have with a kind of mythic figure which Clint is." Malkovich worked with Eastwood on In the Line of Fire (1993) and Changeling (2008).
My Votes: Rocky: Keep. Unforgiven: Keep.
