Reconsidering the AFI Top 100 The AFI top 100 list was originally created in 1998, and repeated in 2007 but has yet to reappear. In this thread we will review the 2007 list, vote whether we think those films belong on the top 100, vote in new films, and eventually at the end i'm going to ask everyone to rank our new 100 for a composite ranking. For the 2007 list items, we will be voting a simple in/out, and I will double up rounds in order to speed things along. If people want to slow down a round to give people chances to rewatch that's fine as well. Every 10 movies or so, we'll have users submit nominations of items not on our list, with majority rule covering the vacancies presented by the previous 10 considered. New additions can be nominated multiple times during the voting process, and we will have a trim-down or vote-in exercise at the end prior to the ranking stage. Let's do this. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ CS! Revised AFI Top 100 (Pre-Ranking):IN:1. Citizen Kane 2. The Godfather 4. Raging Bull 5. Singin' in the Rain 6. Gone with the Wind 7. Lawrence of Arabia 9. Vertigo 10. The Wizard of Oz 11. City Lights 13. Star Wars 14. Psycho 15. 2001: A Space Odyssey 16. 9. Vertigo (1958)Director: Alfred HitchcockStarring: James Stewart, Kim Novak
Number 1 on 2012's Sight and Sound PollAn ex-police officer who suffers from an intense fear of heights is hired to prevent an old friend's wife from committing suicide, but all is not as it seems. Hitchcock's haunting, compelling masterpiece is uniquely revelatory about the director's own predilections and hang-ups and is widely considered to be one of his masterworks.29. Double Indemnity (1944)Director: Billy Wilder
Written by Billy Wilder and Raymond Chandler Starring: The Shaggy Dog, Barbara Stanwyck, and Edward "The Original" G. RobinsonDoes not appear on 2012's Sight and Sound Poll In this classic film noir, insurance salesman Walter Neff (Fred MacMurray) gets roped into a murderous scheme when he falls for the sensual Phyllis Dietrichson (Barbara Stanwyck), who is intent on killing her husband (Tom Powers) and living off the fraudulent accidental death claim. Prompted by the late Mr. Dietrichson's daughter, Lola (Jean Heather), insurance investigator Barton Keyes (Edward G. Robinson) looks into the case, and gradually begins to uncover the sinister truth.
I vote to include Vertigo.
I'm torn on having Double Indemnity in as the noir representative of American Cinema. Chinatown is also on the list, but would it make more sense to have The Big Sleep or Cape Fear here rather than Double Indemnity?

Love this idea. I've been waiting for AFI to make a new list and can't find a statement from them on not having a new one anywhere. They need to get that out ASAP, so maybe we can shove this in their direction and expedite the process.
Vertigo: Keep
No brainer here. We can debate if this or Psycho or Rear Window are Hitchcock's best film, but all three deserve to be among the greatest American films ever.
Double Indemnity: Keep
Not only is this a fantastic film and one of the top five film-noirs ever made, it separates itself from having the protagonist not be a detective, police officer, or any of the usual tropes and makes him a regular insurance salesman who gets roped into a sinister plot. Throw in Barbara Stanwyck's best performance of her career and brilliant direction by the masterful Billy Wilder and this is one that has earned its keep.

They need to get that out ASAP, so maybe we can shove this in their direction and expedite the process. I don't think it's going to happen again. CBS probably isn't interested in airing the specials anymore, so there's no profit motive, also they are probably wary of causing a backlash if whatever list they compile isn't diverse enough for certain tastes so it's more likely to cause bad publicity for them than good publicity.

Definitely keep Vertigo. No question.
I'm also voting to keep Double Indemnity. The dialogue is so fucking good. Perfect ending too.

Vertigo: keep
Double Indemnity: Cut. I just feel like there are better representations of film noir out there, Vertigo among them, actually. I also think there are better representations of Billy Wilder.

Hmm, this is interesting, because do I vote on whether I personally like a movie or not? I think for the purpose of this list, not necessarily. Therefore I vote to keep both of them.

I'd like my final list to have a broad representation, so I'm going to be forced to ask myself if I need multiples from a style, a director, a writer, or an actor.
I'm probably not alone in that.

But this is the "top 100" films, not the "100 films that most broadly represent cinema," so to me it's a simple matter of whether or not I can think of more than 99 films that are better than a given movie. If one director, writer, or actor just so happens to have made a half dozen such movies, so be it.

I get it but...
