This is Part 4 in my series Substituting for SnoBorderZeroPart 1, Part 2 and Part 3IN FABRIC This British import, aesthetically inspired by 1970’s Italian horror films, is the latest nonsense by A24. The posters and trailers should say, “From the assholes that gave you It Comes at Night now comes this bullshit.” Fake Viola Davis is a recently divorced middle age woman looking to get back in the dating scene. She buys a red dress from a store in which the saleswomen look like the lesbian maid from Alfred Hitchcock’s Rebecca. The store is implied to be some sort of witch coven and all the merchandise is cursed. From there, not much of significance occurs. There’s some creepy moments and trippy scenes, but there’s no story. Then all of a sudden the movie switches to completely different characters, we follow their arc for a bit and then the movie abruptly ends. Dracula and PG Cooper are gonna jerk off to this and tell you it’s the greatest thing since ketchup-flavored potato chips, but it’s not. It’s garbage. There’s some awkward attempts at humor by the director, cause I guess this is supposed to be a spoof of 70’s Italian horror, but none of it lands and there’s no story or universe-building or characters of substance to back it up. Is there a theme? Is there a message? Is it anti-consumerism? Anti-insecurity? Or is it just some stupid movie about a floating dress?

You leave ketchup-flavoured potato chips out of this.
