In what way did the studios underestimate Taylor Swift? Didn't she reach out to AMC directly? She went to the studios, but they didn’t make an offer she accepted. Her dad then went directly to AMC Theatres. The big uproar is because AMC (which has also booked the concert film at competing chains) didn’t give advance notice of the release date. Studios feel “blindsided” but distributors (off the record) don’t care because the strikes are lasting too long and movies are starting to get delayed. David Zaslav moving Dune to March is the catalyst for all this.

What passes for journalism for the entertainment industry these days is 90% clickbait generated by content farms by writers with no knowledge about the subject matter beyond what they've read by other content farms or wikipedia. About 8% is promotional material and puff pieces paid for by the studios, publicists, etc. to plug someone's new project. The remaining 2% is legitimate articles taking their subjects seriously, but they get lost in the chaos.

I was most mesmerized by the 1997 slate at the theater:
Titanic Good Will Hunting Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil The Rainmaker Flubber Home Alone 3
All it needed was Starship Troopers and Tomorrow Never Dies.

I was there on opening day for TND. This was pre-digital. Theaters couldn’t just cancel “lesser films” to make more room for Titanic. My showing of Tomorrow Never Dies played to a packed house. If Titanic sold out, adult had As Good As It Gets as a backup. Teen girls had Good Will Hunting. The rest of us had Tomorrow Never Dies. Although… Sherlock Holmes and Puss n Boots did well opposite the two Avatar’s. Cameron has yet to cannibalize the competition.

Not closing. Closed. They were already closed when the announcement was made. I'm hoping to get a refund on my season pass. There was an announcement that pass holders would be refunded at some point. Private equity firms are the absolute worst. Their sole purpose is to make money by destroying people's livelihoods! Radio Shack, Kaybee Toys, Toys R Us, Sears, Red Lobster, and now Alamo Drafthouse. A business so evil that Kim Kardashian decided recently to get in on it.

Yeah, I saw this today as well. Unfortunately, I don't currently have any reason to think that it will effect the North Texas closings. Those were all part of a local franchise, rather than the primary company out of Austin. It's possible that Alamo/Sony may choose to move into the closed theaters, I suppose. At the very least, this seems like a better position for the company than being owned by a private equity firm whose only interest in wringing out every last dollar as quickly as possible before they leave them to die.

PG Cooper thinking, “are we… are we… rooting for Sony?” — — — — I mean this is insane. The soft power of Disney will dominate all theaters. Yet more evidence that those in the halls of power have all been bought by the big corporations. If it's not broken, don't 'fix' it! This law was put into place for a reason. Nothing is too big. But Showcase Cinemas is already owned by the same company that owns ViacomCBS. Not like these types or arrangements are anything new. Hmm, I wonder who may possibly want to take advantage of this? This is some seriously depressing shit. Our city's only second-run theater is closing in May. Our city's only second-run theater is closing in May. Sadly, the discount theaters are getting ever thinner on the ground. I don't know of any left in D/FW anymore. The last one I knew about closed not long after I saw X-Men: Days of Future Past there. Our city's only second-run theater is closing in May. I mean, movies are having a hard enough time getting a first run in theaters... We haven’t had a dollar-theatre in, like, 10 years. Maybe longer. Actually just lost two non profit indie theaters around town just today actually. Terribly run financially but they always got some decent art house stuff which I'm not sure will be replaced any time soon. Actually just lost two non profit indie theaters around town just today actually. Terribly run financially but they always got some decent art house stuff which I'm not sure will be replaced any time soon. There's no money in running a movie theatre. That's one of the dumbest things I've ever heard of, and your town had TWO of them? There were at least 4 only a little while ago within a 15 mile radius of each other but this was two connected to a university and a part of an organization that received grants for the public arts etc. They closed one down a few months ago and I should have seen this coming. 8 bucks a movie. 2 buck drinks, 6 bucks corns, and 2 buck candy. There's a reason concession food is over-priced. A non-profit movie theater? WTF? That's one of the dumbest things I've ever heard of, and your town had TWO of them? They're more common than you'd think, we've had one for a few years and it's great. Yea the cultural trust of Pittsburgh will be bringing them back in one form or another… I was going to buy a membership for the upcoming awards season (as I always do) get like 3 movies with popcorn and drink a month. This could go very poorly but I can maybe see an argument for it not being a bad thing in that theaters are far from the only distribution method for movies anymore. Disney for example can basically control the streaming distribution of their movies in a monopolistic manner in the form of Disney+ as is as can Netflix through their streaming service and the rest of the studios are in the process of trying to do the same, so if they're going to be doing that it might be for the best if the studios at least have the option of making theaters part of their evil empires lest they decide to just ignore them and make their content exclusive to their streaming services where they don't need to share. Could go either way. If everyone plays nice, they'll still want to show other studios' movies, but there will be the obvious regular costs and fees in doing so. Then they'll be able to play their own movies in their own theaters without that extra cost. So each studio stands to make a bit of extra money through ownership of their own theaters, as long as they don't try pushing out other films or blacklisting them outright. I could picture Disney ending up installing their own theaters in all their parks. Universal could as well. Universal has used Cinemark, while Disney has AMC. Then again maybe the cost in renting out those spaces outweighs the money they'd make from their own theaters. *shrugs* AMC Disney Springs is one of the top theatres in the nation. I can see Disney jacking up the rent to force them out and buy it out.

Well, that didn't take long. The Alamo Drafthouse of North Texas locations have all been purchased by the main company, and will be reopening ASAP.
