There's a danger to studios vertically integrating like that, but I also think studios having some piece of the movie theater business could discourage them from making "straight to streaming" a norm... so who knows.

SnoBorderZero, relive the experience of standing in line at the box office in 1991.

My most vivid "stand in line" moment was when Phantom Menace came out. They had several lines for each showing stretched all over the theater, inside and outside (you started outside, then moved inside lol). Stood in line for an hour with my family and then everyone bolted into the theater and claimed seats before sending a couple of us to get snacks while the others safeguarded the seats.
Gen-Z will never know the feeling!

I remember going to see something on MLK Day when I was still in either elementary or middle school, but the showings at our usual theater were so sold out, that we heard they were resorting to having people sit on the steps going up and down the sides of the rows LOL. We ended up going somewhere else.

Gen-Z will never know the feeling! I had a lot of experiences with midnight premieres (back when that was a thing), and yeah, there was huge lines but the whole theater was reserved for that one movie so there was no issues finding seats. You’d just have to do a bit of auditorium hopping. That said, I do have one memorable moment while waiting in line for a movie that played in regular hours. I may have mentioned this to Doomsday, but when I went to watch George of the Jungle (the classic Brendan Fraser movie from 1997), an usher literally got into a physical altercation with a customer. This was back when ushers literally stood in front of the door and I think the guy was trying to get into a movie he didn’t pay for. Either way, everyone standing in line got a show before their movie that day. lol.

I saw two people fight over a seat on opening night of Revenge of the Sith. Just as George intended.

I saw two people fight over a seat on opening night of Revenge of the Sith. Just as George intended. The only good thing about those prequels were the nerds having lightsaber fights before the movie. I hate that idiot for shooting up the Dark Knight showing. We were robbed of a great moviegoing culture. These 7pm premieres pale in comparison to the glory of midnight premieres.

Yeah the midnight movie premiere was a lot of fun. I don't miss the people attending clapping at every damn thing though.
Like, yes, we know that's Legolas. And we know that's Gandalf. You don't need to clap for their appearances in the movie. They can't hear you but unfortunately we can.

Beyond all the obvious reasons this sucks, it also seems just a little bit fucked up to implement a system which will no doubt restrict seating in practice when there's still very valid reasons for people to try and social distance.

Yeah, as an A-List member this pricing won't affect me, but as someone who's been intentionally sitting in the back row and at the far left or right of the theater in order to avoid being near people as much as possible this will be a problem.

Won't really effect the mid week shows I go to but another nail in the coffin - what's one more?

Moved off A list sometime last year, not as much time for theaters any more, though I still go one-offs.
This is going to make me more likely to go to other chains.

This won’t affect people that go to the movies on weekdays and/or during matinee hours on discount Tuesday. It is to fuck over those that go on Friday night, Saturday’s and Sunday afternoons. Business is business. It is what it is. That said, here is my criticism. You can’t make a decision like this without the proper infrastructure. 1. You can’t hire teenagers and expect them to resolve any conflicts with customers. They need to increase their wage and hire adults. Perhaps even invest in security. 2. For this to be successful, a maintenance crew is key. Imagine paying a “premium price” and your seat doesn’t recline and/or it is in bad shape. To me, this is just history repeating itself. Many years ago, before AMC wanted to be American Airlines, it decided to be McDonald’s. They rolled out an extensive menu without the proper infrastructure and it was a total disaster. Problem is, people need to learn to vote with their money. I don’t remember if it was in this thread or elsewhere, but I went into a rant about this very topic and concluded by saying that I was taking my money elsewhere (which I did). Unfortunately, most people didn’t. They continue to be a patrons at AMC and that gives the company the confidence to implement dumb ideas.

Here's my question: the AMC I mainly go to is a "Classic", as I've said before. So, I just show up, get my ticket, go in and pick whatever seat I want. It's still the regular, non-upgraded stadium seating setup without the fancy new pre-picked seats. Is this gonna apply to theaters like that, where you don't pick out your seat ahead of time?

Highly doubt it. There's a few classics that don't even have a seating chart when you buy tickets.
I think that will remain the same.

Doomsday SnoBorderZeroOppenheimer has surpassed Force Awakens as the highest grossing movie in TCL Chinese Theatres 97 year history. Not adjusted for inflation, of course.
