We have the reclining seats, too. We just don't have to worry much about sellouts in the Midwest, despite capacity way down.

I think I had the worst cinema going experiences of my life tonight seeing Kong. There were something like 20 kids in the theatre, which was odd because it was a late showing of the movie. I assume it was a Boys Brigade or a Scouts troop or something. What was worst of all, they weren't all in one row or one corner of the cinema, they were dotted all over the place! The three adults looking after all these kids kept getting up and running all over the place with sweets and crisps and drinks and telling them to be quiet.
I don't know if I had one of these kids behind me but someone was kicking the back of my chair which never happens to me! Maybe people do kick my chair and I just don't notice it, maybe I was just on alert because of people running around the place and kids talking but my blood was boiling tonight.
I'm normally the one confused at people moaning at their cinema journeys because mine are so pleasant. Not this time!

with movies opening on 4000+ screens and overall ticket sales being at an all time low I feel like crowds are the least of the theaters' problems It may be different in the midwest, so let me explain to you what's happening to the rest of us. Reclining seats fucked everything up. Every recliner takes up the space of two regular seats. So what used to be a 500 seat auditorium is now a 250 seat auditorium. When there's a huge movie opening, you immediately feel the difference. Screenings sell out in a heartbeat. Beauty and the Beast, for example, has been sold out since the beginning of the year. Then there's the menu. It has gotten out of control. Forget popcorn and candy. Forget soda. It's burgers and pizza and chicken tenders and alcohol, and since people are assholes, they leave a huge mess behind. It takes the 16-year-old kids a million years to clean up that mess. So even if you bought your tickets online, even if you ordered your food online (which is an option now), you'll still have to stand around and wait for the theater to be cleaned. And even then, there's no guarantee it'll actually be fully cleaned. You run the risk of sitting on a chair full of grease cause the asshole before you couldn't be bothered to use napkins. The lines to the restroom are ridiculous, mostly because they serve alcohol now, and everyone rushes to the restroom after the movie. You feel like you're at a ballpark or stadium. The whole moviegoing experience has been ruined. Seriously. It's a madhouse now. You poor naive bastard. You should have gone to the theater when Bad Mom's came out or when Fifty Shades came out. You're there to watch Lego Batman and suddenly hear a drunk housewive shouting obscenities and getting into a fight with the staff and management and eventually getting kicked out by security. That's what chain theaters have become, sir. Not even in the ghetto $5-per-ticket theaters do you see such spectacle. Let's see how long that lasts. Alright, I see where you're coming from. The only movies I've seen in a legit reclining seat theater were Lion and Hacksaw Ridge and both of those were like a month or two into their runs, so yeah I can see why that might slow things down under more busy conditions. As for the booze, yeah the fact that I tend to go to movies at, like, 11:00 AM (got to get those early bird prices) might have insulated me from the worst of that. That and the fact that the arthouse I go to has a one drink per ID limit. I guess I would say "luxury theaters" are more to blame for that than "chains" per se. There are reasons for these changes though. The idea now is that it's increasingly difficult for movie theaters to compete with Netflix and VOD and 3D hasn't really panned out, so now the plan is to make movie-going into a high class outing like going to a play or opera. It's a reasonable reaction, not sure that it makes sense to do it at multiplexes in malls though. If anything I would have thought that those "cool" independent theaters would have gone in this direction a lot faster than the big chains.

"luxury theaters" are more to blame for that than "chains" per se. All chain theaters are turning into luxury theaters because that's where the money is. Although calling them "luxury" is a farce. I remember 15-20 years ago if you wanted burgers, pizzas or chicken tenders & fries there was an understanding that you had to wait for it. There was a person at the back of the concession who had to make it. NOW the concession stand has been turned into a fast food joint. Half of it is fryers and ovens, the popcorn machine is in the middle and the other half is heaters. All the food is ready to go... with more on the way. People don't buy popcorn anymore... or hot dogs... or nachos... or candy. It's just fried food and they leave a trail of grease everywhere they go. That ain't luxury. And they serve you beer in a plastic cup like if you were at the ballpark or stadium. That ain't luxury. Basically, watching a movie nowadays is no different than watching sports. Except it's worse cause all the farting gets trapped in a 200-seat auditorium. It makes sense when you realize people are idiots. The amount of money people spend at the theater is fucking stupid. You're at the mall. There's actual restaurants where you can eat actual meals and drink alcohol in a glass like an adult. Why are they blowing all their money here? I don't get it. Just buy a soda and a box of candy, watch your movie for 2 hours and then go downstairs and eat at a restaurant like a grown up. I think I bitched about this at the box office thread during the summer. YES, theater attendance is down, but the notion that theaters aren't making money is absurd. They're making money. And studios are making money too. You know how much money Warner Bros made from Harley Quinn merchandise and a top-selling soundtrack? Money is being made by exploiting dumb people.

My city's not big enough to have a lot of options. Cineplex is really it.
Also, the alcohol inn my theater is in a glass. I get a legitimate pint of beer.

Last year I got stopped going into the cinema with a McDonalds from next door. I understand that and I was chancing my luck anyway, so fine. I managed to wolf it down and get it before the adverts finished and the trailers began.
Last month I was waiting for A Cure For Wellness to start, the adverts had just come on. Someone walked in with a Pizza Hut box! Pizza Hut is across town! They come from across town and get in with a Pizza, I come from next door with a McChicken burger and get told, "Eat it, bin it or go!"? How is that fair?!

I only buy food if I have a craving for popcorn which is rare. Otherwise I won't pay for massively overpriced food.

So what does everyone usually do for snacks at the theater? It depends on the theater. If I'm at the Alamo Drafthouse, I usually have a couple of beers and a Royale with Cheese and some fries. If I'm not all that hungry, I'll see if whoever I'm there with wants to split a pizza. If it's the Cinemark, if I get anything at all, it's popcorn and a Dr. Pepper. I bring M&Ms with me, if I remember. They go great with popcorn.

Popcorn and pocket snacks for sure. If you buy large corn and drink you get to choose 1of 2 snacks at a local theater.
It's all an event, normally we get free movies with att two for Tuesday or t mobile gives away a free ticket every month or so too. So the added price of grub ain't bad for me.

Along the way to the theater, there are a few local convenience stores and a McDonalds. I'll generally opt for those options and sneak it in, which, at this stage in my life is admittedly pathetic, but any way to cheat the system is a win.
I also have a ton of regal crown club points, so If i do get anything at a theater, I just use the points.

I exclusively go to www.flixbrewhouse.com/round-rock for movies every week. It's the one time a week I drink (unless there is a work event), and I like the beer selection there. The food is better than Alamo Drafthouse, so that keeps me going there (aside from it being two blocks from where I live). I've never experienced anyone being disruptive or distracting. The last time I did was at a Cinemark theater where a kid kept kicking the absolute mess out of my chair. I turned and asked his dad to please have him stop, and that was that.

I got stopped trying to walk into a theater with my Starbucks that I purchased in the same shopping center that the theater was in. The theater also happens to serve Starbucks as well, so I pointed that out, but they explained all Starbucks consumed on premises must be purchased at the theater. I get it, it's like going into the theater with your own bottle of Coke when the theater serves Coke, but it was still pretty lame.

Not being familiar with MoviePass, I decided to go to their site to get some information on them. They don't seem to be very interested in providing any details regarding their service at all. They say they have "America's Largest Theater Network", yet they fail to provide a link as to which theaters are in that network. The FAQ has this in their list of questions, but their "answer" is a blatant lie. Their first answer is to download their app, and that will tell you which theaters are in the network. Maybe that's true, but I'm not going to download their app to find out. Their second answer is that if you don't want to use the app, there is a list of theaters on their main website. There is no such list on their site. It's telling that only 4 out of 53 people found that particular FAQ answer helpful.
